I was playing in a band out of Nashville back in '76 or so. We were in Orlando Florida and, after the gig, went to a bar down the street. Jerry was on stage (surprise appearance). When he finished, he went to the bar to get a drink, squeezing in right next to me. He said "Howdy" and I was speechless with, I'm sure, a look of awe on my face. He says "We're just normal folk. HOWDY FRIEND!" and winked at me. I said howdy back, and that was that. Such a humble and down to earth guy with a style all his own. HOWDY Mr. Walker, and RIP!

This is my favorite version. Mr. walker's voice now that he is older is perfect for this. Not that it wasn't when he was younger, I just really like his voice nowadays.

You are right. He has some deeper and coarser sounds with even more emotion than he had years ago. Loved his sound before but I think I love it more now!

I agree, Mr Walker has a great voice for these lyrics. And this isn't a tired rendition. I'm sending this link to the young 'uns (who've probably never heard of Bojangles).

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you In worn out shoes With silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants The old soft shoe He jumped so high Jumped so high Then he'd lightly touch down Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was Down and out He looked to me to be the eyes of age As he spoke right out He talked of life Talked of life He laughed, slapped his leg instead He said the name Bojangles and he danced a lick Across the cell He grabbed his pants for a better stance Ooh, he jumped so high He clicked his heels He let go a laugh He let go a laugh Shook back his clothes all around Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance We danced for those at minstrel shows and county fairs Throughout the south We spoke in tears of fifteen years How his dog and him They travelled about His dog up and died He up and died After twenty years he still grieves They said I dance now at every chance and honky tonks For drinks and tips But most the time I spend behind these county bars 'Cause I drinks a bit He shook his head and as he shook his head I heard someone ask please Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Mr. Bojangles Dance

Honesty and sincerity with a melody. Some say they want to make America great again but Jerry Jeff Walker only comes around once. Some artists are dark and move the spirit but there is something about this man that does all that with a smile, he brings light through the darkness and can dim the lights when your girl walks in. I'm forever blown away at the positive spirit he is, happy and sad, the past and the future all in the present. In history class when they teach about America they should put the books down for a week and listen to Jerry Jeff Walker. And they can do it again in sociology, sexual education and philosophy.

The actual identity of Mr Bojangles is not really known. Musicologist have done quite a bit of research and think he was a song and dance man who toured around street fairs, festivals and such with his dog for many years. After his dog died he basically gave up on life and stayed drunk or in jail most of the rest of his life. Very sad indeed. They do have his name but I cannot remember it at this time.

In 1980, in 5th grade, I joined "band" and my dad bought me a used alto saxophone, with the understanding that I either owed him $300 for the sax or I had to make $300 playing it. I, however, had one goal. I wanted to learn to play this song. By 6th grade I learned this song. By 7th grade, I lost interest in band...I achieved my goal. But, because of my dad, God bless him, I stayed in band through 9th grade. Thank God I was a better athlete than sax player, so he let me quit and earn my athletic scholarships. But...to this day, I'm more proud of learning this song on the Sax than playing any sport.
