I remember Sheree North in dramatic roles..I had no idea that was her dancing because I missed the part where her name was mentioned. She was amqzing!!
Mr. Lewis docked his yacht in San Diego (my HT) for many years. I ran into him more than a few times and he was always kind AND humble. I learned from him that celebs are just people and if you treat them as such, it goes a LONG way. Helped me a lot when I was an Entertainment Assistant later in life.
I watched an interview with Jerry Lewis several years back, he cried about getting old and dying. He cried over having to leave his daughter. He was in his 80's then. It was very sad, depressing me for some time. He was a great talent !! America was blessed to have him for so many years. He was a good man with wonderful CLEAN fun. His mind was sharp for the interview. He raised alot of money too, giving of his time for many years. Too bad there are not more "stars" like him today. A MONEY HUNGRY WORLD TODAY. God bless him. Cheryl
Correct a money-hungry world I remember driving is worth $2 per car it went up higher than that and that's not going to the drive-ins the movies went up to over 15 bucks I stopped going to the movies nowadays movie stars producers directors one more money so they take it out on the People by raising the movie industry theaters
Yesh all the comments even from his Son Gary described him as a terrible person and only worse as he got older. Google it. I grew up to him and was hard reading all the things about him. He was mean to Dean as well. He didn't give a penny to his family from his 1st marriage sadly they all expected it.
Jerry Lewis' comedic timing and synchronicity with Sheree North was pure talent and genius...what a fantastic scene!!!...I can watch this over and over...
There's people sliding on the floor , spinning , flipping , doing splits , what's not to like ? I mean , these old time dance numbers get me every time !! The energy is just crazy !!
Jerry Lewis invented new ways of lighting sets in motion pictures , and was the first director to use video tape cameras mounted on the 35 millimeter cinema cameras. This allowed the director to see the shot instantly instead of having to wait 24 to 48 hours for the film lab. He was a genius and an American treasure.
Absolutely true. I have a love/hate relationship with Lewis -- he could be a brilliant performer (like here) and innovative director (for my money, The Ladies' Man is his best directed film), but he could also be annoying and cloying. But I've collected his movies...
@@MuzikSonics I disagree . Now genius doesn’t mean perfect . Still if you don’t won’t use the word genius how about acknowledging Jerry Lewis as a true original!
Jane Doe you know that's exactly what I was thinking in in those days shoes were made beautifully and literally made the last 20 years not like the ones today where you got to buy a pair every 6 months
I think that's what those shoes were designed for. Heels are best for ballroom, swing, salsa, etc. They keep you up on your toes so that you can move quickly.
Jerry Lewis was always my favorite guy. And when he use to do the MD telethon, I would stay up all night just to watch him. He was an amazing man to me. GOD bless his family.
Lennart Carlsson Well, he was a pretty good physical ‘slapstick’ comedian, though I preferred Lucy and some of the Marx Brothers material. Bu the trouble with that kind of comedy is that it’s really only a young mans game. It’s much harder to keep up when you reach middle age. And comedy, of course, is very subjective - ‘one mans meat is another mans poison’. I myself prefer humour that makes clever use of language, someone like Tony Hancock or the manic double-talk of Groucho and Chico Marx. Also, the dry humour of Bob Newhart or Paul Merton (who just cracks me up whenever he goes off on one of his surreal rants!), or even Dean Martin whenever he would come out with one of his hilarious off-the-cuff ad-libs. But I know there will be plenty of people who will disagree with me, and that’s fair enough. There must surely be room for all kinds of humour, especially the way the world is today.
definitely mixed reviews on Jerry Lewis but no one can deny the man had talent. He was born to entertain and he sure did entertain a LOT of people for a good long time. RIP Jerry
More proof that Jerry Lewis was a show business legend. The technique he showed in this was typically amazing. He was a master of every kind of entertainment art. His dramatic acting ability and his comedy were both profoundly skillful. Constantine Stanislavsky often taught that the grotesque was the highest form of acting and Jerry Lewis routinely performed masterfully the kind of technical abilities only a Stanislavsky could recognize. That’s why we are impressed with Jerry Lewis. For the same reason.
This is Jerry Lewis in his absolute prime!! 😆 this man could sing , dance , do pantomime, physical comedy , write , produce , direct , and act!! The man could do it all! He could ad lib with the best of them too.
A comics, comic, Jerry Lewis has had an astounding career and I love it when He and Dean Martin were teamed up togehter. They made a great team in my opinion. I must admit I had forgotten his dance routing and how good he actually was ven when acting crazy as he usually did.
Mikey Condry Precisely. And it was exactly this lack of recognition of Deans talents and contribution to the success of the act that led to the breakup of the team just two years later.
“ A pretty good dancer “ - are you kidding? An incredible dancer! To say “ it takes a bit of skill to combine goofy gestures, accuracy and rhythm simultaneously “ is an understatement. It takes more than that - it takes genius. I have never really watched anything about Jerry Lewis, so I was completely blown away by his talent!!
Jerry Lewis was a great talent to the world. He is a legend. These movies need to be mainstream to current audiences everywhere. They will motivate us to joy and not hate.
When I was younger, I wanted to BE Jerry Lewis. I couldn't imagine a better role model for a career. Dean Martin got his big break because of Jerry. RIP, my wonderful friend.
Who knew? He was such an amazing talent. Everyone remembers him for the goofy characters he played but his portrayal of "Buddy Love" was amazing. And on top of that he could dance with the best of em'
Yes, in order to appear so goofy and uncoordinated in this scene he had to be totally the opposite. He never missed a beat and kept up with Ms. North. Her spastic antics in this dance sequence always cracked me up as a child and still does. Jerry Lewis was a genius at physical comedy.
types of learning..... kinesthetic (physical coordination), auditory (sound) and visual..... I'm an auditory learner myself.... very quick with sound.... but jerry was obviously talented at kinesthetic learning.... as are many dancers and athletes.... according to a ballet student, her teacher's first "language" was motion.... so he was trying to translate kinesthetic intuition into words... some people have that natural talent.
watchgoose He started around 5 yrs old. ( same as Gene Kelly, Patrick Swayse, John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Juliet Prowse, and others in that era).
Thanks for reminding us what real talent looks like. You are right about the comedic dancing. The more goofy looking, the harder to do. Donald O'Connor was famed for it, but Jerry Lewis was as good if not better. He was one of the greats as he could do comedy, drama, fantasy, etc.
@@tanyawhite4196 I did not know about he lindy hop; but I did find out -- through You Tube -- that there is a big swing dance club out there that gather every year and have dance competitions. They had a special guest, one year. A woman in her late 80's who had been a swing dance. She could still dance -- though moderately; and I believe she danced with them, as a guest, until her 90's. That was impressive. I enjoyed watching those clips of her. You Tube is so great for this sort of stuff. I also found a grandma dancing the Charleston in her kitchen; a 90 year old professional ballerina dancing a number from swan lake; and a woman gymnast in her 90's still doing the balance beam. Quite impressive. People forget that professional dancing is a sport and professional dancers are every bit the athlete that a football and base ball player are.
Jerry isn’t given enough credit for many other talents besides dancing. He pioneered many of the modern production tools and methods still being used by directors today, like Spielberg, Scorsese, and Ron Howard to name just a few. The Video Assist is just one of them.
The prat falls was the undoing of Mr. Lewis. While closing a performance in Vegas he did a prat fall… and landed his tail bone on a mic stand. Always the professional, he got back up, did his bows, and made it back to his dressing room before collapsing. That fall started the pain killer binge that almost killed him. I forget who it was but a friend dragged him to see a doctor who's office was located in a hospital complex. He dropped right at the doctor's door and if he hadn't have been right there, he would have died. I saw a very frank interview with him several years ago while he was still absolutely huge, totally unrecognizable. The interviewer made a rather harsh comment about Dean Martin and Mr. Lewis got mad and said quoting more or less from memory, "You don't get it do you. You would not be interviewing me if it wasn't for Dean Martin. I would be nothing if it wasn't for Dean. The only reason I was famous was because of Dean. Dean had and has more humor in his pinky than I do. I had to talk crazy and walk crazy and sing crazy and act crazy for laughs, he is funny without any of those things. That's what finally caused the split. The studios forced him to always play the straight man and he got tired of it. But you wouldn't be here talking to me if it wasn't for Dean. Martin and Lewis made Lewis. I would be nothing if it weren't for Dean". Yes there are plenty of reports he was nasty to work with. He was a perfectionist. And he demanded perfection from everyone he worked with and would not accept anything less.
The Disorderly orderly ,Mr Bryant, big plaster cast rolling down the hill ,Jerry Lewis in pursuit, empty at the bottom, i still howl and pee my pants 😂😂😂
@Lisa-Marie. Right. When I heard him tell Steve Lawrence he'd collapsed at the top of the stairs and spent two weeks in the hospital before returning to finish the scene/film, I thought "oh wow!, that's nuts". I'll never see that scene the same again. I'm so glad he was alright. Cinderfella is my all-time favorite of a favorite. Take care!
I can see some similarities to the big dance scene in "Grease". I guess they took some of the moves they saw here, like when the girl carries Jerry on his back, except in "Grease" it's a girl carried on a guy's back. When the blond lady in this dance scene waves her hands in the air, you find that same move/action done by Cha Cha in Grease, who goes on to win the dance contest with Danny (John Travolta). Just to name a few, but if you watch and compare to the dance off in GREASE, they pretty much copied the entire scene. Nonetheless, both scenes were fun.
I remember seeing this in a theater many years ago, but cannot remember which film. Jerry was a bit too extra for my tastes, but I can't deny this scene was skillfully acted and directed.
I don't think we will have another Jerry Lewis or may be a semblant of him. An amazing performer, dancer, very funny comedian, he will always make us laugh loud from now to eternity.
Jerry Lewis was one of a kind…..such great memories…..now in 2023 somebody somewhere would try to shut him up for whatever crazy reason they can think of…. Comedy is dead anymore. Don’t want to hurt someone’s whiny feelings. Glad I lived in an era that could enjoy, Lewis, Martin and Archie Bunker!
Talent was at a premium in Jerry's day. You didn't get by on just hype. People like him and Jimmy Stewart were naturals who worked hard at it but they made it all look easy.
For those introduced to Sheree North through her role as Cosmo Kramer's mother on Seinfeld, be amazed at her talent on display here. Not only that, at one point she was intended by 20th Century Fox to be one of Marilyn Monroe's successors.
You just described jerry Lewis compassionate and humble and loved all people and appreciated everyone who served in country and in cities 🏙️ who help make our worldabetter and more safe place to live in ❤😊
