Highlights of arguably the best Heavyweight to never win a world title.
Jerry Quarry - Was an American heavyweight boxer. Quarry was rated by Ring Magazine as the most popular fighter in the sport, from 1968-1971, during the peak of his career. His most famous bouts were against world champions Floyd Patterson, Jimmy Ellis, Joe Frazier, Muhammad Ali and Ken Norton. His professional career record of 53 wins-9 losses-4 draws included wins over some of the best heavyweights of his era, 1965-75. Quarry also had a remarkably successful amateur boxing career. Also briefly a Hollywood actor, Quarry appeared in a number of television roles, and also played a recurring character on the show Adam-12. His younger brother, Mike Quarry, was also a high-ranked contender in the light heavyweight division.

One of the most remarkable fighters of all time. Fought Ali on even terms twice.... knocked out several great contenders. Could take a punch like nobody else in history. Jerry Quarry is a legend.

I met Jerry in a parade before he fought Ali. He was a nice guy, very nice to me. I sorry to hear his final years were very hard and difficult. Now that he is in heaven, all is fine, God bless him!! He was a hero to me! that is for sure!

I honesty wish we had more fighters like Jerry Quarry today. A guy who's the ultimate gatekeeper. The true litmus test. "If ya can't beat Quarry, then he's gonna take your title shot and you probably didn't deserve it anyway."

He suffered from pugilists dementia for the last three decades of his life. The Irish and Jews once dominated boxing but they became business owners, cops, fireman, priests and college professors and other professionals. The only thing square in boxing is the ring. Be careful what you wish for.

Jerrys unbelievable heart and courage resulted him to always be in a fight weather he was losing or not, he had a rare one of a kind fighting spirit where he never backed down. Unfortunately this determination and bravery to always push forward in fights, stole years off of Jerry’s lifespan and eventually took his mind and his life as well RIP

I liked Quarry for his style and and never give up attitude. Maybe Foreman was right not to fight him, though he had better form than Lyle and Shavers. He mauled Spencer and if not for the back injury he would have definitely beaten Ellis. When you can do you think you could do one of George Chuvalo?

I think he had some decent head movement at least in early rounds but almost always at a disadvantage by shorter reach, plus I guess counter-punching style allows the opponent to let a few punches off. Sad, but became a legend which most of us can't claim. Also I think it was the second Ali fight, he really did stiffen Ali's legs with the hook and reached him a few times, but Ali played it off with the clowning. Not such a walk over as it's reported. Price of glory...

It is surprising Foreman would claim to have ducked Quarry since George had four devastating knockouts over Frazier, Norton and Chuvalo, who KO'd Jerry four times. George might have been worried about the Quarry who might have shown up, the brilliant counter puncher who baffled Ron Lyle, and might have beaten the 1969 version of Frazier.
@hanzagod
@hanzagod 8 лет назад
George has a bit of a tendency to say anything these days, he was probably just being kind about Quarry. I think we all know Foreman would have torn him apart.

'Knocked Out' aka cut stoppage Quarry hurt Frazier in both fights and was robbed/fast count against Chuvalo.

and the gentleman is correct and I have great respect for big George Foreman but he's on a bandwagon cuz you still related to the industry everybody that embraces and says great things about the slobs of today is getting revenue remember before Wilder became dancing with the Stars and mr. Bird legs and I told people 10 years ago the guy's a punk he can't fight a lick George was on his bandwagon to because George still gets Uno mega money along with his grills and some of his other presentations no hate to George but he says a lot of s*** that just totally full of s*** stick to your grills George George is great fighter much respect for some of the comments he makes these days are ridiculous the top 10 heavyweights today couldn't hold a diaper the 60s 70s and even 80s fighters of yesteryear even an old Viking warrior would clean their clock 😂😉

Look at it this way. In 1973, the year that Foreman became champion, Jerry Quarry had his best year as a professional boxer. He easily defeated Ron Lyle via 12 round decision, and then closed out 1973 with a devastating 1 round knockout of the heavily favored Earnie Shavers. Quarry was the logical choice for Foreman’s next title defense, and would have broken box office records. A fight between those two would have eclipsed all of the other so called “fights of the century.” Foreman would have made a lot more money fighting Quarry in early 1974 than he did against Ken Norton. So the question you have to ask is this. Why would Foreman pass up such a lucrative matchup, and one that would have captured the non boxing public’s imagination? I think the evidence strongly suggests that Foreman was telling the truth about ducking Quarry.
@sportshistorybuff
@sportshistorybuff 3 года назад
@@davidbrandel1311 Sadly for Jerry, between his December, 1973 destruction of Shavers and his rematch with Frazier in June, 1974, he became a noticeably older fighter in his reflexes, getting knocked down in a tuneup bout against unknown Joe Alexander six weeks before meeting Joe. The recent biography of Jerry has the author even arguing Quarry became over the hill in that period.

I have great respect for all warriors I don't understand the comments so much towards the Irish Jerry quarry name 90% of all good heavyweights and I'm not saying all of them but most of them are Mumble stumble Punch-Drunk way before their death sentence Jerry had it bad he gave more than he got and he always came to fight Joe Frazier Punch-Drunk Muhammad Ali was dead on his feet for 20-plus years he had money still so they kept him alive countless numbers of warriors that are Punch-Drunk is insurmountable most heavyweights that can hit it all have about as many marbles as a 4th grader in the third grade did that make sense for you just stick to the facts folks if you're going to put pain management on your credibility list it comes right back to you cuz if your punisher you're going to get punished rest in peace Jerry quarry a great warrior 💯

Yh you’re right. Jerry did his best and he was a badass. And he entertained. He wanted to finish every opponent. He was one of the best at what he did, when he did it. How many of the haters can say that about themselves? One notable exception in terms of taking permanent/irreparable damage in my lifetime is the great Lennox Lewis. He retired after a lengthy career with almost all his brain cells and incidentally all his wealth. He remains a healthy and wealthy man. He used the game, the game didn’t use him. But granted Lennox is the exception to the rule.
