Montana's throwing motion and Rice's catches both looked so effortless that they looked like they were playing casual backyard catch. They were embarrassing NFL defenses.
I've watched him for years. In terms of physical stature I related to rice far better than most receivers who were fast and stronger. The one thing that I have not seen any other receiver do as good as Rice was his he had zero wasted movement and could beat guys off of the line of scrimmage and enough years and timing with a hall of fame quarterback and you'll have a sweat connection. Rice looked fast because he could make defenders go off balance which gave him his crazy separation and he could break his route in a flash. I mean just watch him run a hook route and oh my goodness. The one thing his game lacked was making contested catches, but for him those were rare.
That's what stood out to me more than anything... it's why Jerry's accomplishments will never be repeated because the odds of going from one HOF QB to the next without missing a beat doesn't happen very often.
Jerry Rice had so many Touchdowns in his career that I guess it's impossible to get them all on film. I don't care about fancy catches or degree of difficulty because it's about making plays and No NFL Wide Receiver is even close to Jerry Rice the Goat. Jerry Rice has highlights like nobody period.
The only thing Moss was better than Rice at was going vertical. Watching Rice run his routes is a thing of beauty. Moss never in his career moved with the same fluidity as Rice did. He didn't have the same cutting ability or stop and go moves like him. If I want a hail mary? Pick Moss. For every single other throw? Rice.
Watching Montana to Rice brings back the childhood memories of watching football every Sunday with my dad hoping the 49ers or Elway and the Broncos would be played on tv.
@@lightninggaming016 Up where you have had Quarterbacks play that position at the age of 40 and over George Blanda, Warren Moon,Vinny Testaverde, Doug Flutie you have never seen a Wide Receiver play at 40 and over only 1 has done that The Real GOAT Jerry Rice Bo Jackson didn't play enough to qualify
Jerry Rice is the only player where, when it comes to his position, there isn't even a debate worth hearing when it comes to if he's the greatest of all time or not. He is without a doubt the greatest WR to ever step on the football field.
@@xaviervega468 yards per catch, and more deep touchdowns don't count as objective? Rice was a stickum/montana/Walsh babby. If Moss had Tom Brady his whole career he would've massacred Jerry's numbers
#1 - Jerry Rice Edition of all time. No one will ever better him. The greatest player in the history of the game. He did it in an era were defenders could hit receivers in any way they wanted. No one will match his work ethic.
Game speed? IDK about that. Despite him getting in the endzone its obvious the his speed it nothing special its just that he use things like change of speed and deception to throw off the coverage masterfully. He plays at a 4.7 40m.
@@BlackMusicGenre The league was already in trouble. The 49ers were rolling teams over in the 80s and 90s. Rice was simply amazing. I've been watching football for almost 40 years, and the only other receiver who comes remotely close to Jerry Rice is Randy Moss.
Amazing when you also consider the rules at the time. DBs had more freedom to bump and jostle receivers. Nowadays you get a penalty if you so much as look at a receiver wrong.
Even though this is a Rice highlight reel, i found myself going time and time again, "look at that throw." Montana and Young were so good at hitting rice in stride. those 3 had excellent chemistry together. Throw after throw is just perfect on the timing and execution of the route. even with all the scoring in todays game, i dont think anyone will ever beat jerrys TD record.
I had the good fortune of living in the Jerry Rice era, I keep for the 49ers a love that I cherished since childhood, beautiful times, they have passed, however I still carry them in my memory.
We were able to see Rice, Montana, Gretzky, Lemieux, Jordan, Johnson, Hagler, Leonard, the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, the Soviet Union's every other sport teams etc. etc. It WAS a tremendous time to be a spectator.
I'm 33 die heart niners I'm so glad I was able to see games with rice and Montana in my dads lap at 3 years old to now and to see how far ahead he steal of everyone he will never be touched
When I first saw Jerry highlights, tbh I didn't understand what made him the goat. "He's always open" I said to myself. But then I realized. HE'S ALWAYS OPEN. He was the greatest route runner ever, with the surest hands ever. Jerry just had a natural ability to get himself separation and then cut it up the field for gains. He was always in the right place at the perfect time, and if the ball was a little off, he'd find a way to go get it. You'd say, "how the hell do they let THAT man get THAT open?!" But that's what made him great: they're doing everything they can to stop him, and he STILL gets that open. Dude is the goat receiver by a country mile
They say Rice lacked speed and yes he wasn't a speed freak but when he got the ball in his hands he was definitely moving. His run after the catch ability is amazing
People talking about Odell, Owens, Hopkins etc etc. Showing all those highlights they have over the past few years. All outdone here 20 years ago. Rice was amazing.
Yes, it was the timeline. Not the unending string of records and awards. Not the man who fit in with his team instead of acting like he was better than them. It was just an accident of time.
@@xaviervega468 randy moss is more physically gifted in every way then rice and never played with a hof qb until he was 30 rice had the 2nd best qb ever and the 8 or 9th best for almost his whole career no where near the athletic talent of moss
@@joshhughart289"almost get run down" In other words he didn't, he was fast. He had enough top end speed that he would almost never get caught from the back.
i thought moss was the better receiver, but after watching this it’s undeniable #80 was on a different tier. moss was the better athlete for sure, but rice had better all around skillset as a wr.
#80... all day long. There is only one football jersey I own. I will never need another. So glad I was alive to witness his career. It was special to watch.
Jerry Rice is Simply the goat period!!! Jerry Rice scored 23 touchdowns in 12 games in 1987. He had 22 receiving TD and 1 rushing TD that year so Randy Moss only broke the receiving TD in a season by a WR record but Jerry Still scored 23 overall TD also in 4 fewer games.
Rice and Montana are like two created players on NFL Madden with all of their offensive stats set to 99. I feel like I'm playing a video game when I watch their highlights. Where my 2 created players just absolutely steamroll all of the other teams. It just looks so unfair and surreal. You could've almost inserted these two directly into an NFL game and it'd look exactly the same. So nostalgic. It's almost like Rice was crafted out of a lab to be the perfect best/textbook wide receiver that will ever exist. He just doesn't skip a beat. The closest thing to classical music in football. Pure art.
if u look at rice numbers you can clearly see that he had the most receiving yards out of any receiver of all time. so why are u all hating. yeah he used stickum but he got caught so why are we still talking about it. he's still the best. haters these days smh.
shutdown corner what do you mean yeah he got caught as of it were nothing. he used stickdum or whatever it's called to catch better which is the only thing a receiver needs to do other than run good routes. also he had 2 hall of fame quarterbacks. the fact is he cheated and that's never something to ignore.
Jerry Rice didn't get caught for using "stickum". Jerry in an interview simply stated early in his career when it was widely used still in the NFL to gain an edge that he also used it. He stated it nonchalantly because it's use wasn't a secret. Rice is so far and above the greatest receiver the NFL has ever seen, his stickum use is irrelevant. Especially considering we know it was used by NFL receivers up to the late 80's when they cracked down on it.
Nterstimg how early in his career when he scored he was trying to do some kind of dance but it didn’t look natural then he stopped and would just throw his hands up when he scored. I always respected him for the minimal celebrations. His endurance and yards after catching were legendary.
Faster taller could outjump anyone and catch anything thrown his way and played with a bunch of trash journeymen qbs for much of his career and still put up monster seasons. Its not even a question that Moss overall was the better WR.
+Clint Enos also helped that for most of moss's career he had another HoF receiver to take pressure off. Jerry Rice faced far more double teams and still put up freakish number. Like 22 touchdowns in 12 games... It took randy 16 to beat that record with Tom Brady
he kept his body healthy to play 20 years ... that's an accomplishment itself ... moss at the end of his career looked like teams were doing him a favor by giving him a spot on the roster
simply got open. sports science did a study on him. he has the best reaction time in the league, making it nearly impossible to jam him at the line. as soon as the ball is snapped he reacts quicker than the db and they are playing catchup. best first step ever, like MJs rocket first step, coincidence? they were also both possessed with working out, like possessed. their conclusion was:rice will always be on step ahead of you. funfact: tim tebow and rice had the same 40 time. combine dont matter
Rice: the technician Moss: the speedster Owen: the physical bruiser. The three are the definition of these different styles. There is a reason Jerry could play for so many years.
WHY DOES EVERY RANDY MOSS BETTER THAN JERRY RICE ARGUMENT INCLUDE 'IF'???? It's because IF you had created the world we wouldn't be having that argument... If you don't understand that then just accept that Rice is The Greatest of All Time and move on with your life.
Jason Jackson pretty reasonable . Jerry Rice had 2 HOFs as QBs for his career vs Randy Moss had none except one year internship with Brady. Moss put up astronomical numbers with average QBs while Rice had the benefit of great QB play during his whole career.
Randy Moss in his prime > Jerry Rice in his prime. However, Jerry Rice's career >>>> Randy Moss' career. Jerry Rice was consistent for 15 years or more, Moss maybe half of that.
+Rum Ham yeah rice was a technician at the position moss was physically gifted. Once his gift was slipping he retired where as rice could keep going because he was a true artist. Still yet to have anyone who can beat guys off the line of scrimmage and have zero wasted movement.
How many rings does Randy Moss or Terrell Owens have? Either of those two receiver have Super Bowl MVPs or just MVPs in general? Jerry Rice‘s greatest statistical season was in 1995. Do you know who’s throwing in the ball? The back up, Elvis Gerbac
