Hey my lovelies, in this video we are comparing 3 different casting materials. Jesmonite, Plaster and cement. 2023 BRAND NEW PIGMENTS LINKED BELOW
My main reason for doing this is because Jesmonite is not easily available in the USA. I wanted to look at alternatives.

Jesmonite is a pain to get into the US, extremely expensive. I currently use perfect cast (slightly stronger than regular gypsum plaster). Perfect Cast takes pigments well, but I still prefer jesmonite. And I like cement for pots that don't need color.

Here is something you might want to try. You can make plaster very strong and durable enough to last outside for ever, and strong enough to through 20 ft up in the air without breaking. When you mix it with water, add concrete acrylic fortifier, the more you add, the longer it takes to have chemical reaction to set up and flows better, and stronger it is.

Heyyyy Ronald .. thank you so much I didnt know this :)
@saharriazati9927
@saharriazati9927 2 года назад
Just wondering, is that the best combination to use? Is this acrylic fortifier something you can add to cement? I've made some out of normal cement, only 1 out of 3 survived without breaking when I took them out of the mold and worried that the last one will break easily if handled to roughly.
@ronaldrichman8032
@ronaldrichman8032 2 года назад
@@saharriazati9927 Yes, thats what it is actually for, cement, you buy it by the cement in a quart or gallom, a quart is about 10 bucks and i use 1 quart for 5 bags of cement for stuff, you might want to use 1 quart for 3 bags for a much harder concrete. It will kinda have a temporary purplish color at first, but changes when hardens. takes a while longer to harden, but when it does, you almost can't break it. Called Concrete Acrylif Fortifier with the Quickcrete brand, some of the other brands call it something similar,

Hello, a little bit late comment but there is white cement available too if you want to preserve the color! Thanks for cleaning up the differences I started with cement that is cheap and that I'm familiar with from other DIY projects and then I realized most crafters prefer jesmonite. Probably I will try the plaster too if I make anything to sell, to keep the weight down to avoid extra shipping cost.

Thanks for this video Claire xo. Just for those who may wish to experiment, when looking up Jesmonite Safety Data Sheets, the powder component is listed as Plaster of Paris, and the liquid component as some sort of acrylic compound. I'm sure someone could come up with something extremely similar. Happy experimenting (I hope this helps someone).
@IsaacMaganaMusic
@IsaacMaganaMusic 3 года назад
I read that too. That jesmonite is basically plaster of paris and acrylic resin. I wanna try it but it’s more expensive than just mixing the plaster with water. I wanna know if they look different after sanding
@belahouison4328
@belahouison4328 3 года назад
@@IsaacMaganaMusic For what Jesmonite is, I too think it is way too expensive. I would imagine Jesmonite and simple plaster of Paris would look reasonably alike. Back in the day (a long time ago at art school) I made a few sculptures from plaster of Paris, which sanded down to a lovely smooth finish, however, I found them to be a bit brittle (plus plaster naturally absorbs water). I'm thinking that the acrylic may solve the brittleness problem to a certain degree, and maybe also the water absorption. It's probably something I'll experiment with a bit some time in the future. I have plaster of Paris (pretty old though, but still in powder form), so I only need to research the acrylic side of things and play around. I have read, somewhere on the net, that glue can be added to strengthen plaster also. It didn't specify which type of glue, but I guess some more research may answer that question.
@IsaacMaganaMusic
@IsaacMaganaMusic 3 года назад
@@belahouison4328 yes, I have tried the glue method. You basically mix white glue or concrete glue to the water and the add the plaster. But be careful tho, plaster goes bad after 3 to 6 months if you store it
@belahouison4328
@belahouison4328 3 года назад
@@IsaacMaganaMusic Thanks Isaac. My plaster will be off then - it's over 20 years old!!!! I'll probably still have a little play with it anyway (just in case). It has been stored in well sealed plastic bags, in a plastic bucket with (oddly enough) 2 lids. Found it in my craft supply hoard a few months back. If nothing else, I could use it for adding texture to whatever.

@@ClairesCraftyCorner I’ve read that adding elmers glue makes it stronger. Gonna research that. I just tried layering it with resin like you did with the jesmonite...hope it works. Haven’t demolded yet😁

@Pam Longwell how did it work? Did you try it both ways, like Claire did, plaster to resin and then resin to plaster? If you recall, Claire found adding jesmonite to resin did not work for her. That's why she's doing the Jesmonite first in her molds.

Loved this video Claire as usual. Plaster of Paris tends to be a little weak and can chip easily, but if you add a product called plaster polymer which is a liquid and quite cheap, it will turn the plaster into pretty much Jesmonite. Have a little research and you will find information about doing this. I would like to fiddle with using marble dust also to get a fake marble effect, it never ends!

Hi, love your video! So interesting to see the comparison. I’m currently using jesmonite, but I love the look of cement also. I’d love to give it a try! I have to ask, how did you dispose of the left over cement on your tools etc? I know jesmonite is water based so I can clean everything with warm water down the sink. I just wondered how I would dispose of any left over cement I’m not using? 🙂 xxx
