I really enjoyed this, thank you. I’m spending the winter in Arizona and on my way here I thought I would take in a few historical sites. The James family farm was just off the interstate so off I went but they were closed (4:00 pm) as it was nearly 5:00pm. I knew his grave was now in Mount Olivet but I felt it was getting dark and would be dark by the time I found it. I did manage to hit Meade Kansas in the late morning the next day and toured the Dalton Gang Hideout. Still lots of places out there!
I'm probably going to go just like Jesse James. I can't abide by a crooked picture. LOL. Just discovered your channel. I'm binge watching today. Love Missouri!!!
Very interesting video. That's only a couple hours from where I live, and I think I'm going to have to go check it out. You may already know this, but in case you don't, you can see the jail cell where Frank James was held after he turned himself in in 1882, at the little historic jail just off the square on Main Street in Independence, MO. It's a very small jail, attached to the home of the town marshal. It's got maybe 6 old jail cells, and one is still furnished as it was for Frank James. Apparently he was given very special treatment while he was there for six months, his jail cell looks like a nice parlor. The jail/museum has been closed due to Covid, so definitely check before going to see if it has reopened yet. Well worth a visit.
Thank you for the information. I think there are quite a few James related sites around the area and I hope I’m able to visit them all on the channel! If you do go to the Jesse James family Farm call ahead and make sure that the house is open because it wasn’t open when I was there and they still charged me full price!
According to her daughter in law's book, in her later years, mom Zerelda would throw the bomb (or flare) fragment very noisily on the floor to frighten the girl who was her hired help. lol
I believe the story is true! At the historical Museum in Weston, Missouri there is a lady that works there by the name of Susan Grinlinton… It was her grandmother, Mary Hill Clemens, that stayed with Jessie’s mother from May 1910 through October 1910… Jesse’s mother, then left to go visit Frank and his wife Annie in Oklahoma… She was there until February 1911 when she died on board a train coming back. When Clay county purchased. The James Farm in 1978. They had Mary Hill Clemens come back and tell her memories of staying with Jesse James mother. She was only about 18 years old at the time, and when she was being interviewed, of course she was an elderly woman, but had an excellent memory of where the furniture was located, and different stories about Jesse’s mother Zerelda. I work at the James Farm… And you mentioned the pump… It no longer works.
This is a little better, and I like the fact you went to his "2nd grave". But still missing most of the story. Keep digging. Where do you reside in our great country?
@@JulianGower Interesting Julian...I'm in St Louis...my daughters both live in the KC area. Oldest went to Benedictine. I've been a Jesse fan for years. His story fascinates me...the real one and the popular one. Do you know the relationship between Jesse and Former Missouri governor Thomas Crittendon? Also, check out the history of Osceola Missouri...one of the fastest growing cities until a guy by the name of James Lane came to town. This incident was before Lawrence KS with Quantrill. Always remember, the winner always gets to tell the story. And often times the truth is lost in that.
Hi, thank you for another interesting look at history. As I understand it, the symbol on the grave marker is known as the 'Southern Cross of Honor', and has been used since the 1930s to mark the graves of Confederate soldiers - that, and the pointed top to the stone, differentiating them from Union Army graves. I look forward to next week's episode.
Jesse was actually married to his first cousin who was named after Jesse’s mother… Her aunt Zerelda! I am actually a Historical interpreter at the James Farm and one time there was a family that came in and had a little baby named Zerelda! I am so enjoying your channel… I wish I had been there the day you were at the Jesse James birthplace!
