For those of us 70's babies in our teenage 80's years, we can appreciate that whole Minneapolis Music Thing! Funky 80's Music brings back great memories!
Nobody like the way I hold my mic! Yaaaas Jesse! This song still goes hard! It was so funky! This beat is everything ... the lyrics, the look, the attitude! I love it!!! 🤩👌
Jesse J. will go down in history as one of THE greats!Talent skill and attitude get you guys like Jesse,Prince Minn, and last, but damn sure not least Lil Richard the Prototype and father of STYLE showed us ALL the light!
Not sure about your comment. J J didnt have a long solo career with many great songs like this one. I think he will be best remembered as the great guitarist in the Time.
Mid 80s this song filled the floor at all the Red Onions in SoCal... Can't believe it didn't chart! Saw his concert at The Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim- 1986 and he didn't disappoint! Grandmaster Flash opened for him...
85 the year I graduated . I still remember this song like it happened yesterday jammin at TRIPPERS THE CLUP BOY .u think I'm bull shitting . But when I got out on the floor and found a girl that can keep up. Freaking would not only clear the floor, but tore it up boy ,ah the GLORY DAYS. like the band Time use to say . this song ain't for everybody. I know somebody out there feeeeeels me
So let me get this straight: he answered critics comparing him to Prince by releasing a corny song that embarrassingly rips off Prince’s “Erotic City”? Hmm...interesting. 🙄
@@JAWrightonline Very. A blatantly obvious ripoff of “Erotic City” and a lame, monotone vocal declaring “it’s a free world, and it’s mine”. Ridiculous. Stick to doing what you do best JJ: playing the 🎸.
@AntwhaleNearfar Man, you're crazy. Even though Jesse Johnson has that Minneapolis Sound, Erotic City and Free World are radically different songs in lyrics, tune, and melody. There is no biting from Erotic City in Free World. Artistically, comparing Free World of "stealing" from Erotic City is like accusing Living Single of "stealing" from Designing Women.
You don’t have a very good ear for music apparently. Almost the identical drum machine pattern, as well as the rhythm and tone of the synth bass line. I just revisited it to be sure and it’s as much of a copy of “Erotic City” now as it was then. And corny? Definitely. He even does that old hip hop Melle Mel “Errr rah!” thing in the intro. Ridiculous.
Trent Garland we were jamming to this in Cali bay area they would play this in night club's and all the Gals wanted to dance in 1985-86 they were coming out with hits after hits all the bands and singers 80's was all about PARTYING
erotic city was a trade off.....Jessie and P often gave each other songs.....true brotherhood, true musicians. when you bad in your own rights and you know it, you don't trip!......
Jesse is the Truth. Met him last year in MPLS and actually held a conversation with me regarding our birthday being on the same day. Never met someone so down to earth and cool, famous or not.
I remember hearing this song and walking down Crenshaw and every lowrider and El Camino and supped up Nissan truck was bumpin this track something heavy.
When Randall Cunningham was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in April 1985, rockin' that long California Curl, I couldn't help but think of Jesse Johnson. And, of course, even after RC cut it off, this song--especially the closing guitar solo--reminds me of Randall. I guess it was inevitable karma that he played with the Vikings.
Jesse tore this JAM up back in the day...i was blasting this JAM in my brand new TOYOTA MR2...lol...oh man great memories when I was a young MAN.....lol
Those brothers in Minneapolis really put it down. It's funny how now, people talk about who's the best "producer", and no one talks about the best players anymore. Shame.
a b-side, I still remember when I played this 12 inch for the first time. this is probably the greatest "Snake" dance record ever. course doing the Snake for 7 minutes....personally I prepped the hell out of this one.
All I can say is: memories, memories, memories. I remember walking into a party when I first heard this song. Absolutely, still one of the best! Is Jessie still making music? Anybody know?
This is Jesse's answer to all the Prince comparisons! I danced to The Time's Jesse Johnson's protegee' TaMara & the Seen for my 2011 talent show: please, watch my "Gangnam Style" move 1 year BEFORE Gangnam Style at 3:05! Also, my original dance move the FLIP KICK at 1:13 dedicated to the late & legendary comedian/TV show host Flip Wilson & lead singer Michael Hutchence & INXS' 1987 album KICK RU-vid video: RAMON HART'S PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME.
