Newcomer Jennifer Gadirova (GBR) managed to surpass veterans Angelina Melnikova (RUS) and Vanessa Ferrari (ITA) to take the gold medal in Women’s Floor Exercise at the 2021 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Basel, Switzerland! The competition between the three was tight, and it was ultimately Gadirova’s clean execution that put her 0.066 ahead of Melnikova’s difficult routine. In this video, see how all three gymnasts received their difficulty scores (D-scores) and execution scores (E-scores). Which routine was your favorite?
Jessica Gadirova was a huge standout of these championships for me - we all knew Jennifer Gadirova, her twin, from the 2020 American Cup, but Jessica really proved herself a big factor here. Honestly, it makes me worry a bit for Team GB’s Olympic team in Tokyo 2020/2021 - they’ll have to choose between both Downie sisters, both Gadirova twins, Amelie Morgan, and many others who are all capable athletes. I would hate to see a pair of siblings get split apart ://.
Angelina Melnikova was the top performing athlete medal wise at these European Championships (silver AA, bronze VT, gold UB, silver FX), and it was great to see her shine in the event finals after her unfortunate falls during the all-around competition.
I loved Vanessa Ferrari’s floor routine - the “Bella Ciao” music is beautiful and powerful at the same time. Her resilience and endurance over all of these years is super impressive, and it’s awesome to see her still throwing a Silivas at her age! Hopefully Vanessa can clean up her execution prior to the Tokyo Olympics. Ff she does, she’ll be one of many in the hunt for an elusive floor medal on the biggest stage of all.
Notes:
- Vanessa Ferrari’s last tumbling pass - her Front Full (C) - is actually element number 9 of counting ones, so it didn’t increase her score for that reason. She still needs it for forward acro credit, which is a requirement, but I believe she could’ve just done any forwards tumbling pass there and her D score wouldn’t’ve been affected.
- Many people have likened Gadirova’s Silivas (H) to a Moors (I)/double double layout; I assumed she attempted a Silivas and gave it to her, not considering body shape deductions for a layout salto, which would’ve been rough.
- Initially, I downgraded Gadirova’s Gogean (D) to a Split 1/1 (C), but her score reflects that the judges gave it to her, so I did too. Vanessa’s score reflects a downgrade.
- I didn’t factor in artistic deductions heavily here - I imagine that Gadirova especially may have lost up to 0.2, for similar corner choreography and/or lack of expressiveness. I thought that she was quite expressive, and I didn’t really consider corners, but I imagine that could’ve impacted the final results. A lot of decisions made on video are subjective - ie, it’s difficult to determine the deductions on ring leaps from certain camera angles - so I try to give the benefit of the doubt to the athlete.
- I thought that all three scores were a bit high - I could see a few more deductions on video than were given here - so I didn’t take off every deduction that I could see to match with that. I’m actually happy that the judges are being more lenient on floor exercise because it will create some parity with vault, uneven bars, and balance beam, where the scores seem to be a bit higher.
TIMESTAMPS (score here/score awarded in competition)
0:00 Vanessa Ferrari, 13.600/13.700, 3rd, "Bella Ciao"
1:44 Angelina Melnikova, 13.800/13.900, 2nd
3:30 Jessica Gadirova, 13.900/13.966, 1st, "Stereotypes" by Black Violin
5:18 Final results + Jennifer Gadirova's reaction to Jessica's win
The footage in this video does not belong to me; it qualifies as fair use (educational/informative/transformative usage). Routine footage is from Gymnastea. Instagram clip is from the Gadirova twins’ account @gadirova_twins. The clip of Jennifer is really wholesome, so I decided it would be nice to put in :).

I agree. I think the three pass routine fits her well (and saves her tenths in execution, which have been so key for her high scores!). I hope she can upgrade that last pass/forwards credit pass -- counting a B element is one place where she could improve, but overall, it's been awesome.

I would judge Melnikova's routine a bit differently: .1 for duration of choreography before the first tumble. Chusovitina: .1 for flexed feet .1 for body shape .1 for leg sepperation (being very strict) .1 for step .1 for lack of balance Turn combo: .1 for precision .1 for precision Double layout: .1 for bent knees .1 for flexed feet (being very strict) .1 for hop Leap series (deducting as a switch 1/2): .1 for bent knee .1 for undefined shape Front layout full: .1 for step on landing .1 for leg sepperation (being very strict) Wolf turn: .1 for precision Turn combo: .1 for falling out .1 for lack of balance Double pike: .1 for flexed feet .3 for landing Total deduction: 1.900/2.200 E-score: 7.900/8.200 D-score comments: The wolf turn was definitely a triple but the first turn combo was not counted and in my opinion the Switch ring half shouldn't be either. D-score: 5.8 SV HFEDDDCC = 3.7 CR = 2.0 CV = .1 Total score: 13.700/14.000

I'm unsure as to which turn got downgraded for Angelina: both of them seemed eligible to lose a tenth, and it seemed like Angelina said that she thought she missed the triple wolf turn in an interview, but I'm really not sure which one the judges took. I'm surprised that you downgraded her Ring 1/2, though!
@roanjorna4698
@roanjorna4698 3 года назад
@@GymAnalysis She does three full rotations (even goes a bit further) on the wolf turn so I don't expect a downgrade there but here L-turn was overrotated and double turn underrotated. I downgraded her ring because there wasn't really any back arch. Not sure tho. I hope she does the same as Mai Murakami and replace it with a normal ring leap.
@roanjorna4698
@roanjorna4698 3 года назад
@@GymAnalysis Btw, what's your floor podium prediction for Tokyo? Mine goes Simone, Jade and Mai. This would be different if Ou Yushan actually pulls of her 6.5 SV routine (and survives).
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 года назад
@@roanjorna4698 I agree with you on the ring leap - if the judges want to take away from her, they definitely could. Regarding the turns, I saw her as a bit under when her free leg first touched the ground (relative to where her foot was pointing at the start), but it was really close and probably could've gone either way. I hope Angelina can work on the reverse double turn, though, because it seems like such a more simple skill that she shouldn't be risking downgrades on.
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 года назад
@@roanjorna4698 I honestly don't know! I would predict Simone at the top and a US athlete second (probably Jade), but there are so many wildcards. I don't know why more people switch to 3 tumbling passes, the deductions in each tumbling pass are so high, it seems more worth it (way less deductions) and less risky to just add one more dance element or do a C skill into some other skill
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 года назад
I'm glad that we've seen more people make the switch over, because I feel that unless someone really has four compelling passes (or no strong dance skills), it can be worth it. However, for a lot of people, there are fewer deductions (and less possibility for a skill downgrade) with D skills like a 2.5 twist or a double back, so it's smarter for a D score -- on a bad day, D judges can really penalize a gymnast who wasn't fully rotated on every dance element.
@jjs5056
@jjs5056 3 года назад
@@GymAnalysis There's too many redundancies; lack of control, lack of precision, body shape, etc., can address the same error in 1 skill, which is unfair if not consistently applied. D values need to be recalibrated if deductions remain at -.1, -.3, -.5 because it isn't in the best interest of gymnastics to make 2 small errors on a Front 1/1 (C) = most basic skills (A; RO, BHS, any basic jumps, etc.), or 1 medium error on a DLO (F) = Whip 1/1 or Switch 1/2 (C). Coaches also seem to have gotten lazy or uninspired looking for different ways to raise the D score. Too many FX routines have little to 0 CV, when Whip+DBL Tuck (A+D = +.10 CV), 2.5+Front (D+A = +.10 CV), and Whip 1/1 + 1.5 + Front 1/1 (C+C+C = +.20 CV) all fulfill CRs, but add the same as an 'E' skill toward the total DV.
@ri3lalee
@ri3lalee 3 года назад
@@jjs5056 i feel like tumbling usually has more built in deductions that. turns and leaps and jumps, especially. in the last pass gymnasts are tired, 0.1 for landing at least will already tie the built in precision deduction in dance, and form in the air is quite huge for many people

Love your analyses. Just a bit of healthy desagreements: I rather believe that Ferrari got the Gogean credited but had her Memmel devalued to B and counted the front full (C) instead. Same result, but looks more logic, since the Gogean problem was way more subtle than the Memmel, that looked terrible. Also for Melnikova, I'm sure her triple wolf was fine and instead she lost the CV from one of her connections since both the double turn at 2:04 and the Illusion at 3:00 were underrotated.

I am hoping that future gymnastics competition are able to show the scoring that leads to their Difficulty score. Are the judges required to write out where they are taking deductions or do they just give their deduction scores with no explanation?
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 года назад
I think that would be really nice, but it would be tough for the judges to do, because they have to get their scores in quickly, and it would also be a bit tough for the scoring in general. Because judges can only get certain angles of viewing, sometimes, deductions will be taken differently than what one would've scored with a video, and it could create a lot of confusion.

There is a complex choreo requirement that a lot of gymnasts don't meet which will give artistic deductions. Ferrari probably gets it for the choreo at 1:27, and Gadirova gets it right at the beginning, but I'm not sure where Melnikova has it? Also Gadirova for sure is getting deductions on the body position on the Silivas for indistinct shape, at least 0.1 if not 0.3. It is specifically written in the code for the piked full-in that the first salto can be performed in laid out position but this is not an exception given for the Silivas. I hope Jessica upgrades to the Moors for that purpose.

Why Melnikova's triple wolf turn was downgraded?
@GymAnalysis
@GymAnalysis 3 года назад
If you watch the angle of her foot when she leaves the ground and pause when her foot hits the ground again, you'll see that she's a bit underrotated. The FIG guideline is 30° or more, and I felt like it was likely that this was the downgrade she received (she wanted a 6.0 but got a 5.9). I also considered that she was downgraded on her double turn after her double L, but she said in an interview that her "big mistake" was on one turn, so I assumed she also thought it was the triple wolf and not the double turn.
@anikokoren3417

The guidelines for crediting turns is not 30°, but as it's stated in the help desk "Turn must be completed exactly", meaning that they must be completely finished. Also "The completion of turn is determined by shoulders, hip positions and completion of the turn with free leg." Melnikova was talking about the memmel, btw (she implied that the big mistake costed her a big chunck of the E-score, not about the D), which btw needs at least a -0.3 deduction in shape cause she definitely wasn't holding the right shape throughout xD. And I think they didn't credit her double L turn to double turn cv because the latter was way underrotated. Also I wouldn't have credited Ferrari's memmel, judges were generous.
