Yea this happens a lot due to couple reasons, not explaining it well, and it takes time for it to sink in. And when it does people tend to think they thought of it first.

This can happen for any job, but it doesnt always have to be because of race. For instance, employers can have a crush on one employee and play favoritism. I had a boss who was a pedophile, and I could tell cause the girl he was flirting with was a girl many of my coworkers couldnt stand.
