It was a wonderful surprise to see her on TV getting this level of recognition and exposure. I've seen her three times in Pittsburgh and she has definitely won me over. She looks fantastic here, as always!
I like this gal, been listening to her other songs too. I got an feeling very quickly that I trust her musically. She has a air of confidence that matches her performance. Pretty goods songs too.
I have known and watched her and her Brother David Mayfield since she was 11 and David about 13 ish they are great kids who will one day take the world by storm ... Chittlin (Jessica Lea ) and Bassboy (David) are always in my Prayers ... along with Mom & Dad who raised those kids w/ Respect , Honor , & a great work ethics Many Blessings...SMR David why didn't you play upright Bass ?
sweet song, sweet voice, dig the change to a faster tempo,... this song is really bluesly and rock n' rolly... feelin kinda sh^&ty today..made me feel good
I know I'm in the minority but I actually liked the lead guitar. Great heavy distorted tone. Gives the song some grit. However I agree that the volume of it was probably a bit too loud.
@motalio1 I saw them recently in a small club setting and they were amazing...even better than the album version. The electric guitarist is an amazing, textural player. There's something off about the mix here on live tv.
@motalio1 I saw her live in Kent and i have too say that the lead guitarist was the best part of her act he was bobbing around like a chicken without a head
Takes a hell of a lead guitarist to outshine JLM but this fellow did it. wow, that tone and the absolute grunge of it all. Fantastic performance of an all time JLM fav!
@KyleMantegna You're absolutely right man, it's a Supro. I forgot about those. It's a 60's Supro of some kind. It kind of looks like a 1966 Supro S635 with a different tail piece. Jimmy Page used old Supro amps on Zep's early records. Thanks for jogging my memory man!
The guitar works perfectly IMO for what she's shooting for. The whole thing is just a little bit off center, from her flat drone to her brother's hilarious jam to the incredibly talented wielding of a guitar. Together they express the frustration and giddiness of love that seems doomed but is too magnetic too break off. Which from my seat is exactly what they're going for in this song. And cute? Yeah she pulls off a degree of cute. But just like everything else in this performance, it's an ecle
@Jairm2003 Umm you should look her up, she has been singing lead in a blugrass band since she was 8. She's supposed to sound in pain, thats her thing, its a dark album.
@quadpus You're right. Maybe I should not make comments about sound quality when I'm watching the video on my phone. Still that is wierd that they put it all to the left.
@KyleMantegna Google "supro guitars" and click the fourth link at vintageguitars. It looks like one of the Lexington series. I don't know much about their guitars, but the amps have had a lot of buzz over the years because of the Jimmy Page thing.
This was 2011?! Feels like '94. Guess I'm not the first (it's cuz of the drone and blonde hair, innit?) to make the Cobain reference, but can I cross-reference with a tinge of Cranberries? Sweet and mellow- dig it.
@lastnote Thanks!! Do you have any more information about Supros? I'm not finding too much. Do you know if they're a sub-company of another brand? I saw him play it last night, he's great.
Whoa...what's up with the guitar? I love this song and her, but, unless my audio is off, the guitar is far too loud and overshadows her vocals. he can obviously play, but dang dude turn it down a notch to, like, 11 or something.
THe lead guitar is just poorly mixed in. I saw Jessica live in a small club and the lead guitar was perfect in that case, blending in perfectly creating a bizarre, dense background
Still sounded great but geez the electric on the right needed to take the volume considerably. It drowned out so much of the rest of the fun vibe of the song
Tonight I watched her play a solo live acoustic set and all I have to say is that all that damn chaos really takes away from her skill. She has a beautiful voice and is cute as hell. That lead guitarist is like a pitiful nels cline wannabe. She needs to keep the folk and not try to go all avant garde. At least for now. She was adorable live and I'd hate to see some narcissistic lead guitarist ruin her work. I must admit though, I fell in love with her for a minute this evening.
I have to disagree about the guitar being too prominent. Without that 70s acid-rock guitar she'd be just a weak-voiced folk singer. The guitar doesn't overwhelm, it creates a nice disturbing tension between the songwriter-with-guitar expectation and a mysterioso Pink Floyd production Kinda like it. It is really unusual though.
