Warrumpi Band did this originally and it has huge significance for indigenous Australians but it has become anthemic for all us as well. Such a great, great song. As someone said below it is a love song to this incredible land, this big old island. Joyful indeed!

This song was written by Neil Murray (the only white bloke in the band) from the Warumpi Band . It is the story of the Lead Singer.(the aboriginal Mick Jagger). I didn't mention his real name out of respect to his culture. You should watch ,for your own enjoyment , the Warumpi Band perform this it's incredible. It's his story.

Love your quote "You could close your eyes and hear her smile" She has a beautiful heart. Jess is 'real' no airs or graces....she is down to earth and a humble, kind woman. Love this song too. Love seeing your smile as well. Jessica comes from the top end of Australia and is an indigenous woman. Compared to America Australia is a relevantly new country...founded in 1770. But the Indigenous people have been here for thousands of years.

Jess is from Darwin in the Northern Territory, but the Island she's referring to is Elcho Island, also in the Norther Territory. It's actually a cover, this is the original version by the Warrumpi Band. Christina Anu, another indigenous singer, had a hit with this song with slightly different verses. The song takes on a new meaning when you realise that, for indigenous people, their land has a spiritual dimension as well.
@ValerieKerr11
@ValerieKerr11 2 года назад
The song is not about the island of Australia, it's about the lead singer of The Warumpi Band's home up at Elcho Island off the coast of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

Too many experts in this thread calling it a Christine Anu song. It is not. It is a song by the Warumpi Band, and if you've never heard the original, go and do so now. My father taught me that although we became a nation 1904 and no longer a colony, we didn;t really have an identity. Then world war 1 happened and we went as part of the allies to Gallipoli in turkey. We stayed as part of the allies through the whole war and after the world had seen how we fought in the war, the world new who we were, and what type of people we were and still are. We are a tough little bunch down here, who never quit. We dont do this things like that for recognition or praise. On April 25th we march in what is called ANZAC day to remember those that for for our freedom. It is like Memorial day in the U.S.A. It will be a big day this year with covid restrictions lifted. I will be marching with ny father's medals from Vietnam. He passed away in 2001. Waltzing Matilda i an old song that came from a poem. It is about wandering the about as a ''swaggy'', which is something like a hobo in the U.S.A. An old song that fills our nation with pride. I have heard Americans say the same thing about the song America the beautiful as being your ''unofficial'' national anthem.Great reaction, thankyou, and well done. Lots of people will have different views on this song but this is mine.

This song makes me think of NT and makes me little bit homesick. Do yourself a favour watch Warumpi Band then have a look at no fixed address and coloured stone 👍🏽 foundational indigenous bands. Jessica is from Darwin, the capital of a federal territory, sort of a 'state' called the Northern Territory. It is way up north in the tropics, on the coast about halfway between east and west at the top of Australia. Jessica's mother is Indigenous Australian and her father is Indonesian Australian. Watching your reactions I'm reminded of just how many songs that Australian's consider to be our National 'Anthems'. This is another. The original is by the Warumpi Zband, and Indigenous band , back in the 1980's. The most well known cover is probably Christine Anu's version, which was a big mainstream hit. Christine Anu is a Torres Strait Islander, our other Indigenous peoples. The Torres Strait is the body of water at the top of Australia, between us and New Guinea.

We Australians (USA would use the wording "White" - that Australian's don't use the 'colour' wording but use more our imigrant nationality) ...WE love & respect & recognise our Countries 1st native (Aboriginal) indigenous culture more over our own imigration culture.....That's the Difference between Australia & USA!!!!....Just saying... 🦘💕

The actions of the vast majority of white Australian's on a daily basis strongly suggests otherwise. We should, but most don't.

Sorry but plenty of people in Australia are racist. Unfortunately it still exists.

@@Areyousayingidontknowmyname all the cases of police brutality, suicide in custody and no copper has ever been found guilty of killing an indigenous person ever!!!!! No matter what proof os found. They dont even tell the family if the person is dead until days later esp.in prison.. So stating Australia is better then America cos we don't have rascism on any level is an out of touch statement. At least America has sentenced and imprisoned police and custody officers who've been either negligent or been involved in a murder where they have abused their power/corrupt esp in jails. There's a whole movement speaking out on this. So sorry but indigenous Australians still struggle with rascism esp from those in a position of power. And in their daily life.

@@beckahcauchi4047 If you read my comment i said its not all coming from. I am not sure what comment you read but it was not mine. I did not say anything about Australia being better than America. I am not going to argue valid points you made. But it does not mean that First nation people are not also racist. Often to each other. The amount of times ive heard either my neighbours or others of the same culture calling each other BLACK C@NTS. Excuse my language but its a couple of choice words that regularly pop out their mouths all down the street. The country as a whole is trying to work stuff out. But its pointless if some of the corrosion is coming from inside their own homes. Personally i hope that a wake up call happens.

How many white fellas know any words in an Indigenous language and yet we have Indigenous 'Literacy' Day for people who often know 3-5 languages.

The borders are just made up...I live 800km north of Darwin on Flores Island...which is part of Indonesia now. But the culture is Island culture and Australian Indigenous artists visit here. There was lots of contact between these Islands and the Indigenous people of Northern Australia long before the Europeans arrived from the West. Even as far North as Makassar on Sulewesi Island there is a history of trading sea cucumber with the people of Arnhem. Eastern Indonesia and Northern Australia are very related and full of Island Life culture dance and music.
