I’m a big fan of most people who’ve played Elphaba, but Jessica has this beautifully witchy quality in her voice that really ties back to the film, while still having that insane belting power Idina made famous with this role. Jessica Vosk is, in my opinion, the perfect Elphaba.
I know lots of people think the Broadway lift is too slow, but I find the specific visual between 5:33 and 5:36 of her slowly ascending with the illuminated fog framing her and fully obscuring the faux curtain and lift mechanism to be extremely effective at selling the effect. It helps to have a skilled Elphaba like Jessica singing the heck out of the song, of course!
I hate it when the audience claps and cheers before the song is over. Let people enjoy the vocals instead of drowning them out. It’s poor etiquette, and these performers are too great.
why do you hate it that much? is there *really* more emphasis that needs to be put on “fly” as she’s actively holding a magical broom in her hand while ten feet in the air? plus the *entire* conversation the precedes this moment…
