About Jessica Watson OAM
At just 16, Jessica Watson became the youngest person ever to sail solo around the world. She lived with her family on a boat between the ages of 9 and 14, during which time she was inspired by Jesse Martin, who sailed into the record books a decade earlier. Her voyage inspired a nation, with thousands of adoring fans lining the Sydney Harbour to welcome her home in May 2010. Watson was named Young Australian of the Year and went on to skipper the youngest crew to finish the perilous Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
========================================================
Background to the Episode
After meeting with Alan Bond in Perth, Jack and I were off to the Yacht Club on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast to meet with Jess where it all began. We came to explore how she achieved something so out-of-the-ordinary so young.

About The Thread
Two mates sit down with 10 iconic Australians to figure out how they broke away from the pack. Hugh and Jack seek out leaders of wide-ranging fields: adventure, sport, business, philanthropy, medicine, law and literature to uncover the common thread that binds them.
The interview subjects are household names famed for remarkable and well-told stories, but rarely have they been asked how they did it, how they define success and whether anyone can do what they've done.
Armed with meticulous research and uncomfortably simple questions, we elicit intriguing, inspiring and often unexpected insights from an eclectic bunch of trailblazers.
========================================================
Questions we Ask Jessica Watson OAM
1. How do you define success?
2. In terms of the challenges out there in front of a sixteen-year-old girl, why did you choose sailing around the world as opposed to other challenges?
3. With the adventure, was age a factor, to be the youngest?
4. Before your big adventure, you had lots of little adventures, how important was that in the lead up to setting off?
5. Do you think then that a lot of people let fear get in the way of their goals?
6. Is it an advantage to have a setback like colliding with the cargo ship when you're trying to achieve something so big?
7. The Silver Yang was a silver lining?
8. When you had the collision it gave fuel to your critics but it also gave you the opportunity to find your inner strength. Do you think everyone has that inner strength or do only a few possess that?
9. What was it about your adventure that you think Australia loved so much?
10. Do you think anyone could sail around the world?
11. Do you think you have to be a little bit selfish to achieve success?
12. You had a lot of people helping you along the way, was it hard for you to share your vision with them?
13. Speaking of Chris and Bruce Arms and Don McIntyre, could you have done it without them?
14. Do you think that's the message for most people trying to achieve something big, that you need these people in your life to excel?

We were blown away by Jess's story. What she achieved was remarkable. We also learnt a lot about what it takes to pull something as huge as her dream off. If you liked the episode, please give us an upvote above and comment below. Were you able to take anything from the episode?

🌊⛵️ ~ Horrible decision by the parents. According to the Netflix movie she didn’t set her alarms more than once, and that shows she’s not mature enough. It reminds me of my sister who is an absolute airhead. And I also noticed in the movie during the storm she was not wearing any life preservers or submersion suit. If she didn’t have that on then it is gross negligence, it is the highest form of immaturity there is. So I don’t know if it was accurately portrayed in the movie or not, if it was then shame on her, if it wasn’t accurate then shame on the movie. That’s an easy detail to include. Thankfully she had enough luck on her side that she lived to tell the tale.
