Who would have thought then that she would develop into one of the most talented mid fielders in the world! With a gold metal around her neck! Obviously she is gifted, but a very hard worker and intelligent as well! Makes us Canadians very proud!
Congrats on the golden performance Jess...it was a well-deserved victory! [I forgive you for supporting the Leafs (😉).] And I've done the digging...it looks like the two consecutive, successful penalties (vs. the USA and Sweden) is the Olympic record in women's football for the most penalties (excluding shootouts) scored in a single Olympic tournament (the men's record for a single games is 3, a tie between East German player Dörner in 1976, and Italian player Rossi in 2008...also, a couple men have 2 non-shootout penalties scored in a single Olympic match). And only Brazilian legend Marta has scored more (non-shootout) penalties in a women's Olympic football career (with 3). Also, *counting shootouts,* Jessie has scored 4 penalties total in this tournament, which is the most in a single Olympics *_in the women's OR men's game_* (and the men's game goes back 120 years...although penalties to decide knockout games weren't introduced until the 1970s, and the first game requiring a shootout only took place in 1984). That is a tremendous record to hold...but I'm sure it's nothing compared to winning gold. Enjoy the moment Team Canada - you earned it!
