In case anyone's wondering what she says at the end of the video, "Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meinem Lieben, in meinem lied." from Mahler's Rückert-Lieder: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen. Translated, it means " I live alone in my own heaven, in my love, in my song." She finishes by saying " Schöner gehts nicht", meaning "It could not be more beautiful." Jessye Norman, you could not be more beautiful. Thank you for being an inspiration to so many singers over the years, myself included. Thank you for the beautiful recordings you leave behind. Rest gently, beautiful queen.
I think this is one of the most heartbreaking and emotionally devastating arias in all of opera. And only an artist of Jessye Norman’s immense talent can capture the full emotional gravity that it expresses. God bless you dear Jessye. 🙏❤️🙏
Sadly this is the first time I've listened to Jessye Norman, the day after she died. What an inspiration! Hers is the kind of singing that reminds me how amazing it is to be alive. May she rest in peace
Dame Norman was the music, she was was the character, There is no one in the world like her. She was magnificent in every way, everywhere she went. We have entertained an Angel unawares! Thanks be to God for His wonderful gift. e.conboy
Lady Norman was perfectly fluent in French, German, and Italian. Hard worker since childhood, but with her huge Intelligence, any achievement was possible ❤
She sings Remember Me and looks right into the camera - straight into our hearts and souls. Oh, dear magnificent Jessye, fear not, we will remember you forever. Remember your voice, your beauty, your heart, your intelligence, your impeccable musicianship, your sublimity. Thank you for sharing yourself and your gifts with us so generously. Know that you are greatly loved.
Were you watching a different video. The honorable Ms. Norman, never looked into the camera - or at least it was never captured by the cameraman. Yet, we will NEVER forget you Jessye Norman!
This moved me to tears. She possessed the greatest voice that I have ever heard. I heard her sing as Jocasta in Aedipus Rex when I sang with the Philharmonia Chorus. I queued to meet her after the performance. I have never felt such charisma. It was like an audience with a Queen. She was warm and charming during our short conversation. I had met true greatness. I will never forget it. I was very upset that she passed away. She had a nobility about her. There were comments on her blackness when she was singing roles early in her career. Her reply was " I rather like the colour myself". She rose above it all.
I simply can't bear this. One of the most moving moments in all of opera, Norman's sublime and unbound interpretation, fond memories of singing this opera myself... and now her death. It's just to much. Thank you Jessye.
Precisely the same here. Very grateful for her art. Thank you very much Jessye and all the best in the next phase. You have tremendously nurished our souls and you will continue to do so with your lecagy.
I was on stage in Covent Garden once with Ms Norman back in the 80's, with the Kneller Hall Trumpeters performing a fanfare prior to her performance. She was a wonderful singer, and great feminist! Such a powerful voice. Her battle to become an Opera Singer is highly motivational. Rest in Peace Ms Jesse Norman, you have done a great service for women and opera! This aria by Purcell is so beautifully sung, I find it hurts when I hear it. Why certain listeners don't like this rendition is beyond comprehension.
I'm normally not a huge fan of lots of vibrato in Purcell, but Jessye Norman's voice and interpretation are just so sorrowful and moving and beautiful that she proves me wrong. Stunning.
@@camthesaxman3387 I mean your opinion is valid, but vibrato has a heavy presence in baroque music, however in a much different way than modern interpretation. Typically it is used as ornamentation on long ending notes like the “me” is “remember me” and of course the “ahs” and “fate”. It is a bit excessive in other places, but does not make the English intelligible unless you just have poor hearing.
As a young student in Philadelphia I had the great fortune to hear her live with the orchestra a number of times. It was a sound like I had never heard. Huge and impossibly lush. I had a lesson at the Academy of Music one day before a rehearsal and ran into her in the green room. Almost literally. Haha. She was a stunning presence. Radiant somehow. I am saddened at her passing, but I trust that she had a blessed life. RIP.
Jessye Norman, A Being of Light that has traversed through the ages, An inspiration in such dark times. May Her Light forever illuminate your path. She is the Universe.
Jessye Norman has been my favorite opera singer for a long time. This beautiful lament is the perfect way to remember her as she sings,”Remember me.” I certainly never will never forget her. Sing now with the angels Jessye.
Lori Cameron No way...Hardly!! Not at all. LOL. Singers did not project ego and big voice like this in Purcell's day. And certainly not female sopranos. He would have written it for counter-tenor, a bloke, because he had these in his company.! Check the many historically accurate versions on You-Tube. Janet Baker more like the style. But I agree this is spectacular, and Mr Purcell would have been amazed, and would have loved Miss Norman, though. He was quite a lad.
My Lord what a voice. She has the most powerful version of this song I have ever heard. The others are nice but this is spiritual, lamentation, provocation, hurt combined.
This will be played in my funeral! Shortly before the big Salsa Dancing Party! I'm and opera loving Cuban who was lucky to see Jessye Norman live! How lucky I am!
I first discovered her music while browsing through youtube videos of Dido's Lament. I was immediately drawn to her rendition...so full of emotion. I proceeded to scour the internet for every performance of hers I could find. Rest in peace beautiful-lady-with-the-voice-that-causes-Angels-to-pause-and-listen.
She was one of the greatest in the classical world …and they have been many …I admire her ..her sound her poise her acting …one of the greatest indeed ..
I have heard her many times at the Met. I had a very brief encounter with her at, of all places, a performance of Hello Dolly. She was in a wheelchair, and I made a very brief compliment to her. She responded kindly in her very regal way. I won't forget that moment. I have always and will continue to be an admirer. God bless you.
I could always hear the whole universe when she sang. So clear, so round and almost unbearably beautiful. Majestic calm, beyond all knowing. Thank you, Jesse.
This is the first time I am hearing Miss Norman. I have heard many other great opera singers, but truly her voice is the most beautiful of all! It is like an arrow that shoots right into your heart and awakens your soul. Such a piercing, almost painfully beautiful voice!
Her voice is a velvet rounded gift to all of us!!!.By hearing to her, you can understand appogio, voice position, emision, projection, etc. She is one of my all time voice favorites. What can I say?, I am a Jessye Norman fan. Bravooooo!!!!!!!!
I remember having to practice this song during personal training in college. I watched this video and was like “my director wants me to sing like that?! Yeah how about I make a another sustainable planet 🌎 with unicorns 🦄 and flowing rivers of chocolate 🍫” Tremendous control and emotion and amazing sound. Amazing example of just how far the Lord will use the gift God places in us.
I discovered opera listening to Jessye Norman. She made me love a musical genre that I was finding difficult to appreciate. May she rest in peace, among those great artists who have shaped my youth and are now gone.
I remember being 10 years old, and watching this beautiful woman perform in the commonwealth of Virginia. She was simply beautiful in every way, transcendent! She showed me you could be a magnificent performer of color! Thank you melanin mother of opera!
Jessye Norman will now make the angels in heaven cry with her enchanting voice. The angels will then understand what she has given the people on earth with her voice. Unforgettable, the queen of the opera! Rest in Peace ......
She was a star on this earth, a star is always lighting us as a beacon in our dark lives; the star went away above the blue sky now, the star shines for eternity cause an angel is born, we still could hear her divine voice, Rest In Peace Mrs Jessye Norman, we love you so...
The music is so moving. And the kaleidoscope background… the circling panorama… I’ve watched this video a dozen times today. Thanks for creating such a beautiful classic!
Hauntingly Divine. I am honored to walk the same hollowed grounds you once treaded upon at Howard University. Our world is now filled with an unfathomable silence. First Monserrat , now you... beloved Jessye😢
"Ich leb' allein in meinem Himmel, in meiner Liebe, in meinem Lied. Schöner gibt's nicht!" "I live alone in my (own) heaven, in my (own) love, in my (own) song. There's nothing more beautiful!" And I gotta agree with her on that!
She is quoting the text of one of the Rueckert settings of Mahler, Ich bin der Welt Abhanden gekommen. I recommend listening to this too. Her Mahler interpretations were wonderful.
Rest in Peace, O' Voice Ethereal! What an incredible voice and presence! Ms. Norman's mysterious voice will always be remembered here on Earth. "God's Regal and Colorful Song Bird" is now singing and flying amongst the Singing and Glorious Saints in Heaven!
This is the song I want played at my funeral, when they are rolling my casket out of the church. I can't think of a better parting song and an indelible memory to leave ones friends and family; even ones enemies. REMEMBER ME!
Makes me cry ..... she is so wonderful, what a great gift she was to humanity. Be well, wherever you are... and thank you for all the beautiful singing you gave us .... LOVE FOREVER !
You know, you forget from time to time that it's all about the voice and what the artist does with it. One needs reminding, and this certainly does the trick. Good singing, and I mean really good, is as rare as hen's teeth. I would pay good money to hear anyone sing anything like this.
