That Boat, “Bad Habit,” showed up at our local lake this summer. Chad took a couple of my friends for rides. Lake was absolutely calm, my friend said his phone/gps registered 266 kph. We watched from the beach - it was impressive!

That’s a huge turbine compared to the Allison 250 in my helicopter, no I’m not rich, my dad bought the loach surplus at auction in 75 for..... 14k lol.. I’ve done about 75 in a boat for about 20 seconds it felt like 200 and 2 minutes. Being that open and that close to the water, the sensation of speed is scary.

Hey there - I've been watching a few of your videos here in New Zealand, just because jet engines fascinate me, but I wasn't expecting that. Those Mackraft boats (u367) are built way down in Bluff near where I used to live, by Peter McKenzie and the boys at McKenzie Marine Mackraft. Petes' brother Morrell was managing director of the company until he tragically died on December 2015 when the truck he was a passenger in drove of a wharf at Buff Harbour. When I lived down there Pete used to buy all his electrical cabling from me. Useless info I know, but reminds me of the small world we live in, and it was good to hear your nod to the kiwis.

I’m used to seeing scenery pass by that fast from inside a car, but somehow it hits different when it’s the shoreline speeding by and you’re looking out from a boat going at the same speeds.
@codymartin2532
@codymartin2532 4 года назад
Trying to explain to people how fast this is on the water is next to impossible. This is next level but being a bass tourney fisherman you get so much rush. Doing 85-90 in a boat from a shotgun start is a blast. People ask why do you need to go that fast in a fishing boat. To get there first. It's a race and a fishing tourney at the same time. Best of both worlds!

@AgentJayZ

It means the same thing here. These are water-jet propelled boats. The unusual part is that the jet drives are powered by surplus helicopter gas turbine engines, which are a form of "jet engine". So if you wanted to, you could call them jet driven jet dive boats.

When the front of your boat has wings, you've either done something really right or really wrong! Serious question though; are the wings electronically controlled or assisted, for automatic help with stabilization? For example, I had an RC plane controller that would automatically control the flaps on the wings to keep the plane stable, and user inputs would be mixed in so the pilot could control the plane. Not auto pilot, but auto stabilization.
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 5 лет назад
Manually controlled by two push buttons on the steering wheel. I think Auto-stab would be a great addition to these boats!

Here's a couple questions..as a pilot, and a roadracer(motorcycles)..I get the whole motorsport thing but..A) Why are you racing in 3 inch deep water? It seems like someone said "Let's start a new sport on the water, but it let's make it both pointlessly dangerous and expensive by way of making boat damage almost a certainty.." B) Why use Turbines? it seems like a built, blown small block with 1500-1600 HP would get you just as fast if not faster top end speed, and the increased control and throttle response would be well worth it. C) Why have 2 guys aboard? It seems like the driver could learn the course just as well.. Just curious..
@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 5 лет назад
1: sounds about right... this sport evolved from using extremely shallow draft boats to go up rivers where other boats couldn't 2: a 1500 Hp small block is more expensive and less reliable than a used helicopter engine. There is a Mercury Marine 1500 Hp factory race motor that has beaten the turbine boats, though. 3: The driver focuses on driving - looking at most a couple hundred yards ahead. The navigator is required by the rules for safety, and he/she takes the long view, deciding which course to take. The rivers raced on have multiple channels separated by gravel bars, and most of the races are about 30-40 miles in length up and back down a river. At over 130 Miles per hour, things come at you quickly.

Hehehe it is a jet boat... the propulsion comes from a water jet. The extra "thrust" from the engine is nonexistant... no nozzle. If you had the water jet and a vectored thrust from the turbine... the combined power output would be like 2000-2500hp As is... 1500hp+ to the jetpump is still scary fast and impressive.

@AgentJayZ
@AgentJayZ 3 года назад
No. All of the available energy in the exhaust is used by the power turbine to turn at 18,000 rpm and with over 350 ft-lbs of torque. The integral reduction gearbox has a 3:1 ratio, so the output shaft turns at about 6000rpm with about a thousand ft-lbs. Only thing left in the exhaust is heat.

Thinking about the energy lost to an entire gearbox just to reverse direction, and guessing that it's not cheap to build one of these boats to begin with, why not have a pump built that is identical but spins the other way? Is it a cost thing, or is the energy lost to the gear box relatively small enough that it's not a significant factor in boat performance?

Yeah, let's spend 25 grand, and more importantly 300 lbs in a race machine that does not have the room for a secondary drive system... that it will have to carry as dead weight for the whole race. We'll need a separate fuel tank, and more controls, and more faffing about in the first 20 seconds of the race, to save 10 of them... for a boat that runs away from the competition. The problem in this video was a failed gearbox. If we fix the reliability issues. we win by minutes, not seconds. Your attention is appreciated, but you are focusing in the wrong area.

i was curious whether that was smoke or steam coming from the engine bay, as usual though watch to the end and it usually answers the question

Do you know why the gear box uses spur gears by the way? Helical gears have generally better high speed characteristics.

what are the redlion displays for ?

ouch. looking at the pump pressure before the failure. Could be that the gearbox was flexing from the on-of load. And combined with the heat. RIP

Wow that was a hell of a ride when the gearbox broke. Was there any particular reason why the boat violently went to the left? Is it bad for the bearings to go from full power / full load directly to shutdown without a cool down period?

@johnd9357 9 лет назад
There's no control once the impeller stops doing its job. All of the control comes from the water shooting out of the jet. Just like a jet ski. The boat was in a turn, so when the gear box let go the boat slowed down instantly, causing the right side of the boat to "hook" in the water. If you kill the power like that with any boat in a high speed turn, that will happen.

John Davis Actually, when the pump stops directing the boat, it should straighten out and begin to slow. Can't tell you how many times I've seen newbies to jet drives get in trouble and let off the gas, then turn the wheel. Goes straight into the obstacle. Would have expected the same thing here unless there's a current component that pushed the nose around. Just my 2.

BeachBow Yes, exactly, it wants to go straight - but you're missing one part. When the boat is in a high speed turn, and decelerates quickly (mechanical failure) it wants to keep going in a straight line, instead of through the turn. This momentum causes the boat to hook on the right side, which will throw the boat violently to the left. This was basically an un-commanded maneuver called a "crash stop."

If you want an RC version of these badass boats look up Proboat River jet boat. It's the closet thing for us simpletons.

rkan2 How about we think of it as a boat... on water... going 240Km/h... somehow that seems a bit more realistic. No wheels, no brakes, no pistons, no pavement.. yeah, it seems almost ridiculously stupid to try to think of it as a car.... 'cause it's a boat, on water, not a car, on pavement.... Hmmm... Imagine that.

Wow! Great action! Love the sounds, too! Unless I am mistaken, you included some telemetry in the forward (cockpit) view, showing the G.P.S. device hanging on the center post. I looked like the speed, in M.P.H., on the display, which varied with the power setting. I thought I saw something in the 140s and down to under 100 in the sharper curves. Tell Gord (and God!) thanks! Cheers! DD

Yes. Boat is no longer able to move... steer to shore, or drift down the river..

Damn that river has a hell of a current. Lining up to the trailer in a jet boat must be a bitch.
