Directed and edited by Mark Windows, "From There to Here" documents Jet Harris's incredible life and is an intimate, witty and often poignant film.
Featuring contributions from a host of stars and musicians including Marty Wilde, Wee Willie Harris, Mike Berry, Frank Allen, Mo Foster and Colin Pryce Jones, we meet the first musician in the UK to play the electric bass guitar.
While working at the Two I's coffee bar in Soho, Cliff Richard invited Jet to join his group 'The Drifters', which later became 'The Shadows'. Jet left The Shadows in 1962 to achieve immense success as a solo artist. Jet passed away on 18 March 2011, aged 71 but his loyal fans still keep his memory alive.

Apache by The Shadows is undoubtably one of the classics of pop music. What an incredible sound. It will never date.

I used to think Hank Marvin was a poor player, and that his music was simple....until I had to learn some for a show. Nothing but huge respect for him now, such incredible musicianship, specially for that time!!

The Shadows were a wonderful group and was the best British group around in the late 1950's and well before the Beatles and the Mersey beat groups that followed in the early 1960's. Each of the Shadows were composers also and were behind the success of Cliff Richard and individually as a group. Before the Beatles the group had made three films with Cliff Richard and had composed the music in them and composed all the music themselves for the stage with Cliff with Cinderella which became big hits. The work of the Shadows covered three decades and had many changes over that period and had the sad loss of John Rostill on bass guitar. Jet Harris was an amazing bass guitar player and I was fortunate to meet him back in the 1980's when he played at a theatre in Telford in a 1960's concert. On one of the songs he played which happened to be Apache he broke one of the strings on his guitar but he carried on anyway. A wonderful man.

This is an interesting video. I heard Cliff & the Drifters in 1959 - I had their first album. My favourite album even today is 'Me and my Shadows' released in 1960. The guys had their Fender guitars then.. Listen to Jet's bass on 'She's gone' - brilliant! I still prefer the music of the original 4 Shadows, even though Brian Bennett is an outstanding drummer their last bassist, session mam Mark Griffiths has been very good. John Rostill's death was a big loss. But my favourite were the original 4. They just had ...something, can't explain it.

Jet played 'Diamonds' on a Fender Jaguar tuned down to 'D'. He confirmed it when I met him a few years ago, when he was touring with Marty Wilde. He was a great player and a great man.

Are you sure that was a Jaguar, not a Fender VI?
@davewoodley3716
@davewoodley3716 Год назад
@@donaldciccone235 Absolutely, Donald! I saw him playing it on TV, in '63. Jet played lots of guitars throughout his career, including a Burns Barracuda. So he probably played a Bass VI as well. Last year I recorded my own version on my Jaguar, also tuned down to 'D', just for fun!

@@Elainerulesutube Jet played many different guitars throughout his career. As well as his Fender Precision, he has played a Burns Barracuda baritone, Fender Stratocaster, and his Fender Jaguar. When I saw him on British TV playing 'Diamonds' on his sunburst Jaguar, I thought it was the most beautiful guitar I'd ever seen.

@@davewoodley3716 Hang on. What we thought all this time was a Bass VI was really a Jag tuned down? I don't know, they have the same body but the Bass VI has a way longer neck. A Jag neck is even shorter than a Strat, isn't it?

Too true. Jet Harris was a proper bass player. I was an extremely average bass player in my first band when I heard Nivram. I thought I've got to learn this so I bought the sheet music which luckily contained the bass line. I could barely read music but I managed to work it out eventually. It took me ages. This was my first steps in learning walking bass which proved to be very useful. I was so pleased with myself!

I first had a Vox bass then I saw a guy in Italy playing a Burns Vista Sonic bass which was a budget version of the Burns bison bass wow! I got one but later ended up playing lead on a Burns bison lead guitar. I still have five Burns guitars including a Marvin.

My first bass was a Framus Star bass. I played it for five or six years but it was awful. I was forever breaking strings on it and had to have the neck reset. Eventually I part exchanged it for a second hand Fender Precision which was night and day compared to the Framus.

The late 50's early 60's Jet says he was making £30 per week. When the average skilled tradesman was earning £12-£15 per week after stoppages he really was earning good money. At that time I think Micky Most and Larry Ponds were the two biggest managers in the business.

Pity about Jet Harris. He had his future assured had he stayed with the Shadows. A great bass player when that guy was the poor cousin of lead and rhythm. The Shadows was the NEW sound, and Jet is responsible for two landmarks. The name Shadows was his suggestion, and his bass playing was absolutely ground breaking...
