Jethro Tull : Broadsword and The Beast : 40th Anniversary Monster Edition : Unboxing Review

At last! A review of the latest Jethro Tull re- release. The Jethro Tull box/booksets are the standard the rest should follow. The detail goes above and beyond. They really come across as treating the fans with much respect.

1982 was my introduction to Tull, from a live point of view, at Wembley arena and what a concert it was! Broadsword was an instant hit with me and this box set is a perfect salute to that wonderful album, acres of extra material plus a lavish book...if only I'd known how to get the bloomin' cd's out of their holders safely when I first received this deluxe edition... ah well! I don't have surround sound equipment so the dvd's aren't of any interest to me but the cd's are excellent albeit not sounding massively different, sound wise, to the 2005 remaster. All in all a spot on box of delights from Jethro Tull, from a time when they were one of the the best prog bands around. Another great review, thanks Phil.

The surround sound of it in this boxset is just absolutely amazing! I went for the LP boxset as well. And the booklet there, bah! Wow.

Great review Phil...bitter sweet memories for me when I bought the original vinyl....took my Mum for day out to Southport in 1982, sadly my Dad had died quite a young man 8 months earlier. Browsing through the shops I found a nice little record shop with Broadsword And The Beast on show in the front window, so naturally I purchased it. A definite return to form after what had come before....

I did actually buy this Broadsword edition, it wasnt cheap but I am a massive fan and like you this is one is one of my favourite Tull albums - and that says something considering I have been with Tull from the very beginning. I am collecting these box sets and have managed to pick them up over time at really brilliant prices, however I have 3 outstanding but the prices are ridiculous so it may take me a while to complete my set. I use to call my wife "Beastie" Lolol - she loved the song to. Cya Doug

Totally agree about the track Broadsword. One of my favourite songs of all time and you never hear it on the radio!

Another stunning set. I’d say it’s equal with Stormwatch, Aqualung, Warchild sets in regards to extra material. They would all make excellent double albums

Klasse habe selber alle CD..box vom jehtro tull..immer wieder klasse was da so geleistet wird..früher wurden eben die songs mehrmals aufgenommenen 👍und verschiedene Versionen..das ist heute nicht mehr möglich..rock on. 🎸

I like my Tull in smaller doses but this album is desirable if only for the remarkable graphics across its sumptuous offering.

Watched ALL of the Jethro Tull Deluxe book/box set videos..I own Most of them...I think I lack 3 or 4 of them...they are spread ouot in boxes from moving...but your reviews were brilliant and as you Brits say -"Spot On !!" Just to advise those who may be unaware, the Aqualung, Minstrel In The Gallery & Songs From The Wood 40th anniversary boxed sets are being reissued now!!!! (Thick As A Brick was the first to be reissued earlier in the year). Here's hoping they sell well enough to encourage the reissue of ALL of them. I would like to think that the suggestions to do so on your RU-vid channel helped in getting this done 👍 Keep up the good work Phil!

Wonderful box set series of Jethro Tull albums I’m still collecting them have 6 so far The benchmark for box sets has been set.

I absolutely love this album. This was my first adventure into Jethro Tull back then. After this was Bursting Out then one of the best of collections. But Broadsword was my favorite for many a year. I have the vinyl version of this wonderful new release. The gatefold of Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow was well worth the fee alone.

Couldn't understand why some people were disappointed no DVD crazy its beautifully presented and tbh a very good price.

Been waiting for this one, caught them '82 at the old N.E.C. My mate was the big tull fan, i had only heard this album so i was more than pleased with the amount of tracks played off this album that night. His sword was huge LOL.

It’s a great set. I came to the party a little late and am only missing Stand Up and Aqualung.

Broadsword is not the end Phil, apparently, next up is Bursting Out to be given the Wilson Treatment. 😊

It's pretty cool to take all the early bonus tracks and compile them into a Steven Wilson version of Living in the Past, however, those two live tracks from Live at Carnegie Hall along with a couple other tracks like The Witch's Promise and Dr Bogenbroom, still haven't been remixed. Pretty cool to put together though I keep Wond'ring Aloud, Again as is...

I agree Phil,i think this may be the best of them all,of the ones i have for sur...The assorted songs,the extas are fantastic ,the demos are not really demos...the sound is great!

Hi Phil, enjoyed your video as always mate, great stuff. I'll try and keep my comment short because i could talk all night about these box sets, Broadsword in particular. As old as i am (64) and having gotten into heavy rock and prog rock around 1974, i had never really listened to Jethro Tull, or been introduced to them the way i had been with the likes of Yes, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, ELP, etc, but... the way in which i discovered Jethro Tull was totally by mistake. I'd gone into my local record shop one Saturday afternoon and spotted this cool looking cassette tape in a sort of mini plastic video case with some really cool looking art work which reminded me of Jon Anderson's Olias Of Sunhillow album. Anyway i picked it up ( obviously still blinkered ) and quickly read the back of the case with the song titles and band members. I just remember reading the name Anderson then going to pay for it thinking it was a Jon Anderson solo album hahaha, you can't get any more blinkered than that can you hahaha. It wasn't until i got home and read it properly that i realised it was actually Ian Anderson and this was in fact a Jethro Tull album and not Ian Anderson hahaha. Thinking back, it's hard to believe that this was where i started with Jethro Tull, but what a start, Broadsword is, and always will be, my favourite Tull album.

God, I waited for this album for TEN YEARS! And so happy that I Did! The only way it could have been better is if Ian Anderson hand delivered it! Got it online for about $170 AUD and well worth the price. I already have the original TAAB 40th box set, and in fact was the very first album I ever bought at the princely sum of $6. already ordered the re-issues of Minstrel and Songs From the Wood, following with Aqualung. Can't wait! Every re-issue should be like this. oh, and GREAT presentation, even for the converted.

I have a few CD boxsets in this format (not Jethro Tull) and I love the design and wish more were done this way. Despite having a few of them it’s only now that I realise I’ve been removing the discs the wrong way, and getting away with not breaking anything, so thanks for that tutorial.

I learn how to take the first disc out first .. its a trick you have to push it down & than it clips out.. I loved the unreleased stuff .. Jack-A-Lyn . Jack Frost & the Hooded Crow..are excellent composed classics .. .. I find the " Broadsword track to be a perfect track to be used as a tribute for the Military..

Been waiting for this one, Phil. I gotta say, t hat might be the best out of all these. "Songs of the Wood" is probably my favorite Album ot of the bunch, but this is the best Set. Do you think they'll do more? If so, are you interested? I more or less discovered the Band through these after watching your Series on them. Beforehand I've only had "Aqualung" and "Broadsword" for a number of years. Didn't listen to them all that often. Both were re-releases with Bonus Tracks (2005ish I believe). But these got my attention and I hunted them down. I discovered a lot of good stuff. And I hate the springy things. I'll try it the way you suggest. Wouldn't have thought of it, probably for fear of scratching the one above ...

Such a massive pity that they have not been reissued for those who missed them the first time. Come on IA - PLEASE can we have Stand Up, Aqualung, A Passion Play, Minstrel In The Gallery, Warchild, Songs From The Wood, Heavy Horses put out again!

This is an excellent boxed set! Probably one of the best in my substantial collection. The sheer wealth of material alone is breath taking! Excellent post Phil. Thanks for the advice about extricating the discs - it helped! It’s still a bloody stupid design. But what do they care, as long as people buy it, essentially! One of my faves of this year, without doubt! ❤

Because of Phil in the last few months I've bought the Thin Lizzy Rock Legends and Live and Dangerous box sets, all the Jethro Tull reissue book sets and now this Broadsword set. I'm gonna stop coming to watch these reviews it's costing me a fortune

Odd question this but bear with me: are the 5.1 surround sound discs any use if I don’t have a surround sound system..are they even worth listening to?

I wish I had waited to watch this video before I published my review of it yesterday morning Phil because I found it a bloody nightmare trying to get the discs out and slagged it off as a flaw in the design. I just tried your method of removing the bottom disc first and it does make life easier. However, I still feel they cut down on the quality by doing things this way with the flimsy plastic they have used. As a rule, I have always given praise to these Tull Media books but this one was well overpriced by at least 35% in my reckoning. The only Monster thing about this package is the ones taking the extra pennies and unlike the other 13 reissues, I cannot say that this package came at an honest price point. Unlike you Phil I have never seen the Broadsword album as a good album and neither do I think it was very well-produced with the songs that Anderson put on the album. Personally, I think he struggled making the album which is why so many songs were written for it in the first place. Many of the tracks that were placed on the album are not cohesive and sound disjointed with the placement against one another. The only tracks that have the right mood are the first two tracks on side one and side two. Those 4 tracks also give you the impression that he originally had intentions of making a concept album but obviously failed. It was obviously never made with a clear understanding lol.

Jimmy Page would charge 2000 euro's for this kind of work. That's why he'll never do it like this.

A long time favourite partly ruined by an awful Steven Wilson remix that puts the drums way too high in the mix with a reverb that swallows everything else up.

This is my top 3 favorite JT album, and I was REALLY looking forward to get 5.1 version of it. Alas, in order to get it, I have to pay $85 for the stuff I don't care about! It sucks. My mid finger to Ian and the label. I'm a fan for over 45 years, but I'm probably not the right fan because I don't fell orgasm from seeing 5 CDs full of "rare material" and "live versions" of the stuff I know by heart! I just need bloody 5.1 version, I already have 4 other versions of this album! Not that I can't afford it, I just DO NOT WANT TO PAY FOR THE STUFF I DO NOT CARE! All right, I will wait until the 5.1 version appears somewhere, so I can burn my version. My mid finger to Ian and the label.

Hi Phil! Sorry to nitpick but I just want to let you know, the way you have your box sets arranged in this video chronologically is incorrect. Heavy Horses comes after Songs From The Wood.
