Check on ebay, a refurb rack is about $200 and tested. Way less of a hassle than wasting your time in the junkyard. These racks repeatedly fail. I'm replacing my second rack in less than 2 years.
Quick question, my 98 Jetta GSL steering conditions are becoming more abnormal when I accelerate the steering wheel jerks to the right and when I let go the gas pedal it jerks to the left. I got this Jetta for free and to be honest I’m more experienced with Japanese cars but this one is frustrating me! I replace both engine mount and the transmission mount as well, also replaced the front shocks. Just can’t seem to figure out what the heck’s is wrong!!!
Excuse me, I just wanted to know if you can help me with my car. I have a problem with the power steering. It spills all the oil. Can you help me? I removed the old steering and put a new one on, but I don't know how the connection is going.
Remove the banjo bolts and they connect to the hoses which connect directly to the reservoir. Then pull the whole thing out and replace the hoses. The reservoir is less than $17 on ebay so replace that too.
Great video but I'm in the process of doing this and have hit a road block. When I went to remove the tie rod ends the nut is just spinning along with the bolt. I'm at about the 1:24 mark of the video. Any advice? Thanks!
@@SVsAuto Thanks. I was replacing the tie rods so I just wound up buying an angle grinder and cutting wheel and had them off in short order. Nothing like an excuse to buy a new tool!
My TDI is shaking when I get up to speed (over 60) and when I'm braking. I was told it needs a new rack and pinion. The car has 190k on it. I figured it needed balanced wth lol

I have been doing an automatic to a manual swap. Unfortunately when I went to put the lower power steering line back on I got the bolt cross threaded. Do you know if I can have that re-tapped so I don’t have to buy a new rack? Would you recommend it? Don’t worry I’m not gonna hold you liable. Your advice would be appreciated. I do have an old rack... can I just swap out the piece with the 2 banjo fittings?
I would think that if you can clean the treads up enough that it will grab a seal you would be ok. You would know pretty quick if it is going to leak. As far as swapping out the piece with the banjo fittings I am really unsure, It has been such a long time since I worked on one 🤔. Good luck I hope that it all comes together for you.
@@messiahsmisfit33 That's the reason i'm here, swapped steering pressure hose and cross threaded the damn banjo bolt... bought m14x1.5 tap and ran it in and out to clean up / repair threads, leaked like a bastard, tried various aluminum and copper crush washers and nope, still leaking, so we are just gonna swap the rack, fortunately a reman on fleabay is only $130 shipped...
@@E4EonEbay I tried to retap as well. Got the same results you did. Ended up ordering a remanufactured off of Amazon from Detroit Diesel. All good now but will be more careful when I do this again in the future.
I wish that I could tell you, the car threw a rod not to long after we filmed this video and we had to part ways. Maybe another viewer has installed it and can provide better insight.
Great detail right up on this video. Is it possible just to remove the back portion of the subframe and leave the front still connected as long as it supported to get the steering rack out?
