This public domain WWII-era film presented by the Elgin National Watch Company details the process by which jewel bearings for timepieces were mass produced during the war. It follows a raw sapphire boule through the manufacturing process to a "preparage" and then a completed bearing ready for use in Elgin watches.
If you'd like to own a bit of history, a bit of, as the video says, the "concentrated element of accuracy," then check out our selection of Elgin watches at ticktockguru.com/
hat-tip to elginnationalw... for this great find!

Consider that at the beginning of the process, one round of work pushed through 40,000 individual piece at a time.. by the time that they were completed the process, one jewel at a time was examined, by hand, individually for exact perfection in all aspects by a person! THAT amount of dedication, precision, concentration and mental steadiness needed means that I would have put a brick into my face in a short period of time.. how did these folks do it back then? The tiny size of the dang things! Today it's mostly all done with electronics, remotely and with little human interaction throughout the whole process. I watched this video in it's entirety muttering under my breath in amazement how they got from a blob of man made material to a precise sized and shaped tiny little jewel... Gob smacked... yes, you have to watch this video!

Thanks for posting this. Fascinating process. I wonder if anyone would make a modern version of the film. I imagine the process today is much more automated and the technology involved is way more advanced.

Wow that is a lot of Shellac.

Good documentary! The most important steps have not really changed very much even today, and we still use similar wire laps and centerless grinders to manufacture jewel bearings.

I wonder where all those machines are today. I wonder if they destroyed or are sitting in the dungeons of one of the larger businesses 🤔

Wow. How many times is each jewel individually handled and shaped by a person. So many steps. Some of them done on mass and in bulk. But so many steps require 1 person to individually shape each jewel. 15-16 jewels in a single watch. Hundreds of thousands of watches. Impressive.

Amazing video. If only it wasn't in such a miserable low quality :(

My question is how they used to do that before the industrial revolution 🤔

The answer is that they did not. Before jeweled bearings, there were just simple journal bearings....a smooth hole.
