So happy to see you back I agree that it does suck that it’s a lot easier to just scrap it but sometimes that’s what you gotta do. I would take my very “stone laden” jewelry to the local jeweler since they pay with the way of stones and then send my other gold to the refinery. Always nice to keep local friends! Thank you for another great video and sharing your jewelry with us!!❤❤❤

@@OlivesVintageMarket awwww thanks so much! I really hate to see the cool things scrapped….but, with less of them around, makes the remaining ones in higher demand, right? Gotta find the silver linings! 😝

Awwww....thanks so much! I know you know how busy life can be! Yes....so sad to scrap some of it...but, on the bright side, the more of the older stuff that gets scrapped, creates a shortage of really cool older stuff...thereby making it more valuable? lol Gotta find the bright side! 😜 As always, thanks for watching and being a sounding board!

This is good information! I am not a reseller, but have considered giving it a try on ebay to finance my jewelry habit. I really worry about listing my gold items for fear of being scammed, so I'm considering selling the larger pieces for whatever melt value I can get. My consolation is that both of the jewelers, that I'd approach, sell estate jewelry, so there is a chance that they'd keep to resell instead of melting. I've been watching the price of gold go up, so I've been sitting on a decision. The decisions you are making make sense. I love that coral ring "as is" and would wear it! Possibly you could have the surface of the coral smoothed out into a cabachon? Or attempt yourself? Second thoughts: Is there any more seller protection on platforms like Ruby Lane, Worthpoint, and First Dibs?

I don't see that as a huge problem. Know your pieces. You need to makes sure you are happy getting melt value. I actually consider it an honor for the pieces to be saved and sold to another collector (even if that means the jeweler made some money on them). Melt value is based on weight and karat only. It is up to you to learn whether or not the piece is worth more than melt and that, of course, can be subjective. I recently sold a pair of very old horse cufflinks to my jeweler. I made the comment that I hate to see them melted but I just don't have the avenue to sell them. My jeweler said they do hold onto gold for quite some time before sending in for melt and if they think they can sell a specific piece to a collector, they will. I appreciated the honesty and the fact that they desire to preserve older pieces as well. You just need to be happy with YOUR sale....what they do with it after you sell is not really any of your business. Sooooo...the real trick is learning all you can about your pieces and others like them for when you go out thrifting/antiques shopping. (and yes, I got into reselling jewelry to fund my jewelry hobby and other hobbies! lol)

I have noticed lately that more and more new jewelry is not being marked at all, especially silver. It is very hard to convince a customer that an item is 925 when they can not see the number for themselves. There should be a law stating that all new jewelry items either American or imported be marked with its weight and purity.

That's so interesting. I have found lately that more and more IS marked that ISN'T real gold or silver! I can't tell you how many times I go to test a marked item and it turns out to be incorrectly marked. It would be really nice if companies were all honest and marked everything but that's part of the mystery and fun of jewelry collecting to me...sleuthing out the unmarked companies and metals. If everything were marked, I probably would not own any Juliana pieces. lol. I agree it can be very frustrating but the right buyers have to come along for some of the unmarked pieces. Be patient and they will....and, if people are that concerned, they can always buy a test kit! ☺

lots of good information. thank you. i too have many pieces of jewelry from family that i keep for sentimental value. it is good to know that if need arises, i can sell for scrap.

right? That's kind of what my husband thought....we thankfully are not in dire need of the money so keep the gold for a later date if needed...if not, family heirlooms continue to get passed down. Just make sure to mark them clearly so the kids don't think they are costume and sell them at a yard sale! lol

This is very helpful info. Thank you. How would you recommend finding a reputable jeweler who wants to test jewelry and buy gold/silver?
@SLOHappyVintage
@SLOHappyVintage 3 месяца назад
Most jewelers and pawn shops (at least in our area) will test gold at no charge with no obligation to sell it to them. If you have more than a handful of pieces, they sometimes will charge based on their time (which is fair). I'm in a small town and prefer local jewelers who are actually goldsmiths rather than any larger chain store. Finding one who knows antique jewelery can be difficult and one who knows costume jewelry is nearly impossible. I would visit the jewelers in your area and see what they have for sale, if they create/repair or just sell, ask questions and also rely on word of mouth. You can easily look up the value of gold online (it fluxuates daily like the stock market)....and most jewelers will offer you 50-80% of that value because, well, they need to make a profit too. Refineries claim to offer up to 90% but they are paying on pure gold value (24K) so the weight you send in will not be the weight they pay on after all impurities are melted away...not many people realize this) Best of luck to you and thank you so much for watching!🥰
