Merrill Ashley (former NYCB principal, now at the Balanchine trust) said that Olga Smirnova was born for Diamonds, and that working with her was one of the highlights of her life. Wow, that’s something…
Smirnova has a marvelous hauter, perfect for this PDD in which she avoids him, ignores him, and makes use of him only when she needs his partnering. This is exactly what the part needs. And what could be better than a Polonaise, particularly when it's danced as lightly and elegantly as here.
It's a real pity they cannot dance together anymore. But I think she was very brave to live her country as she did. She has my full admiration. They both must be very sad. They made an amazing dancing partnership.
@@user-hu2em6gd4kTo loose a dancer like Smirnova is always bad. I don't doubt there are other great dancers but it takes time to make a perfect partnership like Smirnova and Chudin.
I watched this again just now, 4 years later. The choreography looks great on this company, and the dancing is beautiful. Also, Smirnova-Chudin have grown on me. I don't know what I was thinking earlier because they really are wonderful. Gosh, he looks young here.
Balanchine was truly a creative genius. The separate dance and music of each of the Jewels is simply - brilliant! Diamonds to Rubies to Emeralds, each another facet. Once in a century do we have a Balanchine.
yes, absolute love for dancers and above all ballerinas ! very elegant and classical with a "relaxed" style he found in New York, Balanchine is great !
Enormous interesting partnering between Smirnova and Chudin! He is such an elegant and sensitiv dancer - realy the best for the diamond Smirnova! And -- a very good corps de ballett, congreats!
Olga Simirnova is Suzanne Farrell incarnate. Each of these 2 dancers are beyond a total perfection. There is no room for any negative comments concerning their technique or interpretation. I cannot believe what I have seen from this incredible pas de deux by Simirnova and Chudin. Thank you.
OMG she is the HOPE DIAMOND .... unbelievably beautyful.. her eyes are HUGE.. somehow they become part of her performance as diamonds unto their own .. WOW
This is Olga Smirnova. A Russian ballerina. About her the BBC writes. Because Olga finally had enlightenment, and she declared that she was "against the war with all the fibers of her soul." Then she left Russia to join the Dutch National Ballet. Who received her immediately and with warm embraces. Now she will dance beautifully in Europe. And this is Artem Datsyshyn. A Ballet dancer of the National Opera of Ukraine and winner of international competitions. He will never dance again. He died at the hands of the Russian occupiers. That's all you need to know about culture outside of politics. On the prospects of unity under the auspices of culture. And about the price of war. Which we pay. And which they (Russians) use.
The video shows Semen Chudin, rather than Artem. Artem danced on Kiev. He was a volunteer. It was his choice - to fight and to die. There was no need to go to the battlefield. Smirnova betrayed her motherland, her teachers, her friends, her theatre.
I LOVE O.S. Dancing!!!💘She's Definitely a new fav! She has the most Beautiful ballet lines that are evident throughout All of her movement. I simply LOVE it!👏💘 Chudin's feet & stature are a rare commodity!💪 dancers!
@21:30 + @21:50 it is *so* beautiful to watch dancers (or any human being!) attempt something knowing it can go well or not well... then succeed! oh what love of joy! both Semyon and Olga were radiant during their variations... their joy glowed like diamonds that have been fashioned to reflect the light of the sun...
Diamonds is simply inspiring. I so hope NYC Ballet comes to the Kennedy Center in DC next spring and performs Jewels again. After a hiatus, seeing Diamonds is inspiring!
- Olga Smirnova and Seymon Chudin are "drops" of God's sweat that have fallen to Earth!
This is not my favorite couple for this adagio, but what I always like about it is it's slow slow burn; and it seems different with every different couple that presents it. It really thrives on that subtle chemistry that is between them. I know Balanchine didn't want acting, but this adagio always seems to sort of have a story that you would just like to see how it it started and where it ends, and who these people are, and the music is just lovely.
@@ernstbelov6929 AS a retired dancer, i am age 79 ... I believe Semyon Chudin is the finest I have seen in a long time ... he and Smirnova are perfectly matched ... and yes, I must agree I too now have a "foot fettish"!!

@@richardsias Thank you very much. I do not understand almost anything in ballet - but when I saw Chudin first time (on video, unfortunately, not live) - I liked this artist, he became on top of my favorites.
I'm puzzled by the videography of this fine performance...or maybe it's the choppy editing. Seems like a lost opportunity to revel in the dancers' art.
I hate incompetent directors who film ballet. All the cutting and closeups ruin the beauty of Balanchine's choreography, especially the exquisite patterns he created with the corps de ballet.
Indeed, it must be a complex task for those who film and edit footage of ballets that very much *are* works of group composition, patterns on stage, etc... How to shine the spotlight on so many aspects -- the individuals who dance, their expressions, the subtly and sparseness of the costumes, the intricacy of the steps and the manner by which the artists perform them, such breathtaking lightness... -- while at once maintain the chronology of sequence, as movement and music unravel themselves in real time ? Even with the best technology and a stroke of genius, such a task as this might well challenge the competence of many, even those who, too, come to deeply appreciate the exquisite patterns rendered visible by Balanchine...
All that said, I do agree that the film could have been cut much less often. I am privileged to feel familiar with the patterns, indeed having seen them and loved them previously -- all thanks to a recording that allowed them to be better observed, that is ! =)
l thought this was just spectacular! Just one little thing bothered me ...especially during the finale ...and that was the editing. lt would be nice to get a continual angle for more than 5 seconds. A wider angle for longer time when there are many, and a closer view when it was just the two. The stage left view wasn't very good, and it was frustrating when the editor cut the pair in half by using the close up. MUST see her legs at all times!
They are wonderful dancers. But when it comes to online versions of Diamonds, I still prefer POB's. It just seems to fit them better than it does the Bolshoi, especially when it comes to comfort level with the choreography and spacing on the stage. Also, POB has the best Diamonds costumes of any major company that performs the piece. Including NYCB whose costumes are now the color of "canary yellow" diamonds.
whomever edited this with all the fast cuts and close ups ruined what looks like a very competent performance of Diamonds ... editor: it's okay to pull back and let us watch the wonders of Balanchine unfurl ourselves without you spoon feeding us
The tempo is typically Russian, varying from ponderous to funereal, and the video filming and editing, beyond horrific. But, even though the Bolshoi may not have come to grips with the Balanchine style, and their approach to Balanchine may be fantastically wrong-headed, what they do dance and how they dance it is simply beautiful. Someone could have coached Smirnova on how to present Balanchine's extreme body angles in space so that her extensions are shown to best advantage, but in the end this performance succeeds on its own terms.
The video editing is annoying. Too many quick cuts. Too many tight shots cutting off 3/4 of the dancers. I want to see all of the dancers all of the time.
This ballet is THE icon piece of great choreography and masterful dancing thet set american ballet style and standards since was produced 1967. I am not sure what this is supposed to be, but what I am sure is that this is not Balanchine Style. Not at all. It is so faraway from Blanchine, it is not even AFTER Balanchine. This ballet is Blanchine`s homage to Russian ballet. as he use Thaikovsky `s Simphony No. 3 in D major op.29 and Russian imperial ballet Style, not Soviet ballet tradition.
this is the Bolshoi interpretation of Diamonds as a technical display which it kind of is Not...their technical perfection kind of gets in the way of the piece.
Awful, awful awful rendition of the pas de deux. Overly mannered, kitsch, posing. For the definitive see the Farrell/Martins. Nothing to see here, move along.
@@jamesthosbaker These two are dancing something, but it IS NOT BALANCHINE'S BALLET. The female dancer looks like she is dancing the ballet version of Sunset Boulevard.
I don't think it's good performance, I agree it is very mannered, but best version I saw in Lopatkina/Zelensky performance. And the biggest mistake to call Tchaikovsky - Balanchine work not Russian. It is Russian, just different time and different approach. Balanchine is real genius, and to dance his choreography right is very difficult
