Before World War II, everyday life for Jews varied greatly. After Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party rose to power, Jewish life in Germany and throughout Europe changed forever. This narrated compilation of home movies provides glimpses into what was lost during the Holocaust through scenes of people walking and socializing in the street, dining in a cafe, celebrating holidays and birthdays, playing in a yard, vacationing, walking into school, exiting their synagogue, and more. The footage was shot in Poland, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, the Soviet Union, and Trinidad.

This is not counting all the lives lost on the allies sides and Holocaust (including Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, people against the regime in any way including those in the military, arts, politics, etc.). I ended up here due to research and I felt I had to leave a comment. Sometimes, with academic distance, or even just the distance of time, you can be aware of the horror of this event but without really feeling it. You can kid yourself that it was so far off it could never happen again, and that humans could never be so cruel and barbaric today, but watching this footage has stunned and disturbed me, because in these images all distance becomes invisible. I'm glad this footage exists to document these people and families, and I feel privileged to have been able to view it, this window into lives that did not know how things would change. Thank you for the resource. It is not the barbaric murderers we ought to know the faces of, it's of their many victims. I will think about this often. Thank you.

Whenever I have the chance to pass through a predominantly Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn I love to watch the parents and their children on the way to a synagogue. It's the best thing that they can do,to help continue their religious traditions that had been taken away from so many during the Holocaust. Through my grandmother I am of the descent that made life a horrific existence for so many millions of innocent men, women and children. As a child I was told never to talk about my grandmother's background as we did live in a partially Jewish neighborhood. My friends were of all different backgrounds. In my home we were never taught to hate others.Thank God for the grandparents and parents that we had.

It's positive to hear that you appreciate and respect the efforts of parents and children in a Jewish neighborhood to maintain their religious traditions. Supporting and preserving cultural and religious practices can indeed be an important way to honor and remember the history and resilience of a community. It's also encouraging to hear that in your upbringing, you were not taught to hate others and had friends from diverse backgrounds. Embracing diversity and promoting understanding among different cultures and religions is essential for fostering a harmonious society. However, it's important to acknowledge the historical context and the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. While you mention that your grandmother was of a background that played a role in the suffering of millions, it's crucial to remember that individuals are responsible for their own actions, and it's not fair to hold present generations accountable for the sins of their ancestors.🦒🦄🦓

They exposed their daughter to both religions while she was growing up. Their daughter, now in her 30s, is not religious (as far as I know) but she knows that antisemitism continues to exist in the cultural DNA around the world and for that reason decided to not get her DNA to learn of her ethnic ancestry because the record of the results would exist on the company’s records. As you indicated, “I AM JEWISH”, so with my niece. In the back of her mind/heart is the weight of the knowledge of the Holocaust and the awareness of groups in the U.S. and around the world still promoting antisemitism, and concern for what could happen in the future. It's understandable in a sense that society is beginning to want to forget what happened to the Jews, even to the point of denial that it happened now nearly 100 yrs later. It's not an easy thing to wrap your mind around that degree of horror. It is even more critical now that we do NOT ever let society forget. Films like these are priceless.

The holocaust was a horrible time in history for BOTH sides! Yes! They Jews were treated terribly but it also turned the once kind hearted and innocent Germans into Nazi's who were brainwashed to hate. I watched a version of Anne Frank's story. In one scene, a former German friend and classmate was talking to them and her mother angrily yelled at her to stop taking to Jewish girls. No, that is not true. The Nazis were people who were raised with a dislike for Jews, and were surrounded by neighbours, friends, and a larger community that detested Jews, who had no problem whatsoever slandering them and laughing about them. It was a sickness all through European society. They were not "normal" people. They were highly prejudiced and seriously considered the Jews to be greedy and a lower form of human being, and often excused this hatred by saying the Jews killed Jesus.

For my entire life I’ve wondered why did the Germans hate the Jews so much. This is the first time I’ve ever seen films like this; they were very enlightening to me. I live in Los Angeles, there is a fairly large Orthodox Jewish community right around the corner. The Jews in my neighborhood in 2021 LA look very similar to the Jewish folks in the films, black long over coat, a tall hat & long bushy beard with beautiful curls on each side of their head. Even here in LA there is division. The Orthodox Jews seems to shy away from the community. Their kids don’t go to public school & are not allowed to go to college. You will never see them at community events or gatherings. I don’t know why the division exist but it does.

Thank you for this film. It’s so very important for all people, especially people who really wish to understand why we Jews in America have found the past eight days since the hostage situation in the synagogue in Colleyville, Texas, a week ago yesterday, so disturbingly difficult. It follows a rapidly increasing number of violent incidents of Jew Hate in the USA. This film shows the happy everyday life of people taken by tourists to Europe on vacation or families just like yours and mine having fun. The only difference is the time and place and, perhaps for you, the people shown are Jews. Please know in advance this is not another historic film showing the atrocities or anything violent or murderous that occurred in the years following the film. What it shows, in a very poignant way, is far worse. All that was truly destroyed. It is only 30 minutes of footage. Please take the time to understand why we are horrified that we have fellow Americans championing the regime that wiped out all you will see. Among these were the part of my paternal grandfather’s family that never emigrated to America 🇺🇸 at the turn of the 20th century in 1912.

I understand that recent events, such as the hostage situation in Colleyville, Texas, and the increasing number of anti-Semitic incidents in the United States, have been deeply disturbing and difficult for the Jewish community. It is important to acknowledge and address such acts of hate and violence. While I don't have the specific details about the film you mentioned, it seems to be focusing on the everyday lives of Jewish people before the atrocities of the Holocaust occurred. It is crucial to remember and honor the lives that were lost and the immense destruction caused by the Holocaust. Understanding the historical context and the impact it had on individuals and communities is an important part of promoting empathy and preventing such tragedies from happening again. It is disheartening to hear about fellow Americans championing ideologies that were responsible for the destruction you mentioned. It is essential for society to stand against hate, discrimination, and violence in all forms, and to foster a culture of inclusivity, understanding, and respect.

It was supposedly banned as a weapon, due to how damaging it was.Cocaine use amongst Europeans was high. Over time, These substances effect the regions of the brain which are responsible for logic, reasoning and compassion. Also, industrialized cities put out so much pollution, which also effects the brain. Individuals who had Psychosis and other mental disorders had been undiagnosed. Heartbreaking. I wish I could make all those haters who talk about killing groups of people watch this. All these people are dead--and so are the monsters who wanted them dead. They all are dead, and all the cities were leveled. If they would just put away their racist thoughts of killing other groups of people and learn to appreciate one another, work together for common good, we humans could rid the planet of disease, hunger, want, pollution, etc, and travel to the stars. I always think of the great musicians, scientists, writers artists, architects, etc that were killed, or their parents, grandparents, great grandparents, etc, who were... This is sooo hard to watch. I keep waiting to hear of those who survived, but then they lost their fathers or others, so they must have been broken-hearted. Every little girl looks like someone who was my friend in school at some point. And the smiles on the little boys' faces look like the weak grins on the faces of those the U.S. troops liberated, but who could not stand without help...or the bodies.... What those people did to these happy families. :( TY for posting. Such beautiful film.
