The Nazis murdered 90 percent of Poland's Jews in the death camps. Seventy-five years after the end of World War Two, life is returning to the Jewish community in Poland.
Jewish cultural festivals, kosher restaurants, klezmer bands and Jewish schools have returned to the Poland of today - the country that was once the location of the Nazi German Auschwitz extermination camp. The growth of the new, vital Jewish community is in part thank to the Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich. Visits to Auschwitz and other camp locations in Poland are for him simply part and parcel of the country's history. Schudrich grew up on New York's Upper West Side. As a student, he traveled to what was then Communist Poland for the first time. His grandparents had emigrated to the US from Eastern Europe. At the end of the 1970s and later in the 1980s, many Jews looked for their families' roots in Poland. There were only a few left - among them were the Polish Jews who were closely linked to the Solidarity movement. They founded the "Flying Jewish University" at this time. A loose network of Jewish intellectuals even back then already believed that Jewish religious life would again find a place in Poland. The idea must have germinated in Schudrich's mind quickly. He decided to dedicate his life to rebuilding Jewish religious life in Poland. The concept was one he shared with billionaire Ronald S. Lauder, a key patron of Jewish religious projects around the globe who today is president of the World Jewish Congress.
Thirty years ago, after the fall of the Iron Curtain and the collapse of Communism, Michael Schudrich made his way to Warsaw. Here the son of a New York rabbi with a congregation in the Bronx became a chief rabbi. In the 1990s, he encouraged many more Poles to rediscover their Jewish roots. Several hundred learned the basics of Jewish religious life in the then newly established Jewish school in Warsaw, leading them to become conscious of their long-suppressed Jewish identity. Now the Jewish communities in Poland have as many as 12,000 members who live according to the rules set out in the Torah.

The film ignores the period of 1945 to 1968 when there was Jewish life in Poland. We were openly Jewish, went to a Jewish school in Lodz, sung Jewish songs, went to Jewish summer camps. So with all due respect the current "revival" is not accurately portrayed.

There is so much debating about Polish involvement in despicable acts against Polish citizens of Jewish origin and how it weighs against the very heroic acts of saving them from death . Rarely if ever are these debates initiated by Poles . Poles usually find themselves being on the defensive . How come ? Assuming if Poland were a horrible place to be , then can anybody explain to me the following : 80 % of 16th century European Jews found their home in ...Poland Prewar Jewish community constituted 10% of the Poland's population . Poland was the only country under German occupation where an instance of aiding Jews carried a death sentence for the entire family ( go figure ) The highest number of Righteous Among The Nations belongs to ....Polish nationals . Final thought ... So how does the so called "Polish anti-Semitism " stand up against other European countries ? Still not good enough ?

The citizens of Poland have the world's highest count of individuals who have been recognized by Yad Vashem of Jerusalem as the Polish Righteous Among the Nations, for saving Jews from extermination during the Holocaust in World War II. There are 7,112 (as of 1 January 2020) Polish men and women recognized as Righteous Among the Nations, over a quarter of the 27,712 recognized by Yad Vashem in total.

I found this hilariously, ludicrously indecent that Poland is called anti-semitic. In UK, when I am based, Jewish politicians were being driven out of the political party, just because they were Jewish. They are being abused to the level of absurd. Schools and synagogues are being guarded by privately-hired guards, so the children and observants are feeling safe there.. Anti-semitic incidents are a daily occurrence. The casual diner-conversation revolving around "jewish problem". It seems to me that there is a diabolic agenda behind calling Poland anti-Semitic. What could this be? Follow the money.........

Denying that something doesn't exist won't make it go away. Face the fact that within every society there are anti-semites around, especially in global crisis such as this one. The footage that I have seen from Poland's Independence Day is gut wrenching. Take some fucking responsibility already!

Pols are taking their responsibility, do not bother yourself with this. Check you own back garden, it stinks out there! I saw clips with footage of open anti-Semitism happening on the streets of Berlin, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. It gave me a shiver! Your mass media blaming Muslims, but that's so not the case. After the Great German Case of Redemption (Inviting Syrian refugees) now Muslims slowly becoming the scapegoats. You see the difference is that even if the Pols demonstrating quite ostentatiously, they will not go beyond this. They are happy with their independence. They will not build concentration camps, crematories, they do not invade other nations under some silly pretext. Germany on the other hand, has a consistent, proven record of being on the wrong side of the history. I must say that there is something in German cultural DNA that is so destructive for others. Completely lack of ability for self-reflection, self-criticism, no boundary. We can see this clearly throughout a history. Even before WW2 broke up highly respectable Professor of International History Arnold Toynbee capture the essence of it by saying:"Germany is not proving herself the appointed saviour of the modern world. She has degenerated into vampire state, that suck the life - blood of any nation that falls into her grip". So, do not lecture Pols, because you are making caricature of yourself and any typical German. BTW - Is it truth that German education system do not teach their children about the atrocities their grate-ground fathers committed? The history has a tendency to repeat itself. More self-criticism, less self-righteousness!

@@nina-ciara 1. No, "mass-media" does not use muslims as scapegoats for growing antisemitism. In fact most are called "Lügenpresse" by right wing extremists because the support immigration and the variety of cultures. And at the end Germany was the country who accepted the overwhelmingly big amount of refugees - in contrast to Poland. 2. Yes, we have problems with antisemitism, even today. But we have also problems with Muslim antisemitism (although it's because of the gaza conflict, it usually isn't such a strong ideological problem but rather "normal" stereotypes) 3. "German cultural DNA" is quite the funny term if you think about the fact that a lot of German culture has been destroyed and we became quite western/culturally diverse (more than 25% have an immigration background). While the British or French people send their military to some war without much thought the Germans usually discuss every cent that goes into the Bundeswehr, we have quite the pacifistic culture; there's pretty much nothing left of prussian tradition or the need to go to war. (Even though we now go on UN missions because as an economically and politically strong nation in a globalized world you can't just ignore every conflict.) 4. Just the question if Germans are educated in their history just makes me think that you don't have ANY idea about this whole topic and just makes the rest of your comment seem quite uneducated. The history of WW2 makes like half of the whole history lessons throughout your school life, I think there is no topic that we learn more about than Nationalsozialismus. Usually we go at least 1 time to some memorial of the atrocities done by the Nazis, sometimes even more often, with school. I've been in Hadamar and without school in Dachau but still want to go to Auschwitz once. There are a lot of laws that prohibit you from denying the events of WW2. It is pretty much part of our culture to remember those events and do everything in order to let this never happen again (even though there are people who want to abandon this tradition but they usually get strong headwind by the bad mass-media). Now I'm an airforce officer in training, there is still political and historical education about this topic and if you say something that can even slightly be connected to nazi ideology you can lose your job as a soldier pretty much instantly (§8 Soldatengesetz, there are frequent cases of soldiers who get the highest disciplinary punishment for showing sympathy with nazi ideology). I think the German state gets regularly criticized by foreign conservatives because "Germany is a strong country and should not care so much about its past" due to the fact that we probably have the strongest culture of remembrance (unlike other countries like turkey who don't want to accept their warcrimes and genocides to this day). So at the end of the day don't call people ignorant if you don't have a clue about what you say either.

@@lernen6755 _"Germany was the country who accepted the overwhelmingly big amount of refugees - in contrast to Poland."_ Really? So, how many??? Because Poland accepted between 2-3 MILLION refugees and immigrants from Ukraine, Belarus and other parts of Eastern Europe. Or in your opinion, do the refugees and immigrants have to be of a certain colour in order to qualify as such??? As for neo-Nazi's... there are more of those large groups in today's Germany than in any other European country... they even hold marches in the streets... and you know it! Btw, in school, did they teach you that the Germans created the Auschwitz camp for Poles only? That for the first two years only Poles were sent there to work and die? And that only after that period (in 1942) were Jews sent to, NOT Auschwitz, but to a new camp in a town the Germans renamed Birkenau (a few kilometers away). And that's why the name Auschwitz-Birkenau was later adopted. Did you know THAT??? Did they also teach you that Poland was completely devasted by the Germans, that 3 million Catholic Poles were killed during WW2, and that 80% of it's wealth in historical works of Art, etc., was stolen, or did they only tell you about the Jews, who were incredibly compensated financially by Germany for 60 long YEARS after the War, whereas Poland, to this day, received absolutely NOTHING!? Did they teach you THAT??? As for Germany's economic strength... that was only possible due to the massive financial aid and support from the U.S. and the UK, without which, it would probably still have the same economical 'strength' as Portugal. When, or if, you take a trip to visit 'War Memorials' in Poland, instead of focusing on the camps, keep your eyes open for Wall Plaques on buildings and Memorials to the Polish troops, resistance armies and civilians including children, murdered by the Germans and also by the Soviets. You will find many of them in EVERY single city, in EVERY single town and even in villages THROUGHOUT the entire country... and not only in concentration camps!

I found the documentary slightly misleading. Not necessarily intentionally but giving a slightly inaccurate picture. 1. There have been Jews living in Poland, observing their holidays and living their religious life, even if in private. It's not like Polish Jews lived in a limbo before Rabbi Michael Schudrich arrived. There is book by a Polish Jew Henryk Grynberg called Refugees where he mentions some of the life of Polish Jewry at around 60's, early 70's. 2. Poland, or the area of former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth which covered much greater area than modern day Poland, which included Lithuania, parts of Belarus and Ukraine was a place where 80% of all Jewry worldwide lived. Jews have settled there because they were less persecuted there than anywhere else. Chances are if you're Jewish you have some Polish roots. 3. There is fascism on the rise in Poland but I don't know how much it affects the Jews. When I recently spoke to a friend in Paris she mentioned that over there there is police guarding synagogues where you don't see that level of protection in Poland - at least in the past there was no need for it. 4. If you're interested in the post war history and culture of Polish Jews I strongly recommend reading one of Henryk Gryndberg's boos.

It's estimated that 20 Poles had to cooperate to save 1 Jew during the war. Obviously, it's very painful to then hear how antisemitic Poland is, so antisemitic that, according to Yad Vashem, Poles are the most righteous among the nations. The Poles who lived during the war are dead, they can't defend themselves, so I will. Of course, they were some bad apples, but the West and Isreal make it seem like the Poles invited the Germans over to get rid of those pesky Jews. Jus the other day I saw an article about 'The Polish concentration camp'. I'm glad Polish Jews have now more freedom to practice their religion. Good for them. It'd be sad if Judaism disappeared from the country that had been a refuge for Jews for centuries.

What if dogs were racist? Would they care about fur color….. “son, only play with other tan dogs”? Or maybe it would depend on breed, “honey, only play with other German Shepards, never poodles”. Better yet it could depend on occupation. “I’m a sled dog while you’re only a running companion, leave me alone”. Maybe the neighborhood they live in could be the way they choose which dogs to associate with and which to shun? Size could be the determining factor, “see how tall that dog is, they are probably dumb”. Luckily dogs don’t discriminate. Just watch at a dog park. Big black and white dogs wag their tails and play with tiny tan dogs. A service dog chases after the same ball as the off-duty police dog. So if dogs don’t discriminate then why do we?

The short version: Two thousand-ish years ago when Christianity first started, there was already xenophobic treatment of Jews in Europe, but when we wouldn’t convert, it went from hatred to mass violence/ethnic cleansing/mass murders. When Islam was in its early days, the Prophet couldn’t convert us either, and mass murders ensued. Jesus and Mohamed are gone, but the New Testament and the Q’uran have a lot of antisemitic text, which is read by billions. But according to scholars, it’s what is preached from the pulpit in most cases that continues the slander today. Freud said that when Jews were murdered en masse because they refused a religion, that made the non-Jew question the validity of THEIR beliefs. It’s sad and ugly, we all just need to love and respect each other without trying to change each other. Hope this explanation helps.

Oversea Vietnamese everywhere in the world are very success despite to managed pressures from other wealthy ethnic groups like chinese or jews cuz we viet are being viewing more negative for the merchandise behaviors. In 986, a Viet mechant took the throne of Champa kingdom and ruled to 992. In 2017, a German Vietnamese became vice German prime minister. Vietnamese have been being compared to jews and chinese. Jewish language and identity survived for 2000 years. Vietnamese language and identity survived 1000-years of chinese rules.

How does the Catholic church promote anti semitism? Not being defensive, truly curious. We are all human, religions are all similar in different ways. A higher power to direct and help you navigate through our lives in a positive way.
@magdaciwis5920

Catholic Church is not supporting anti semitism, it is against the Bible and all Catholic Laws to support any kind of discrimination. But you can find bad doctor among doctors, as well as bad priest in the Church. I personally have been raised with respect to all religions, with special connection to Judaism. It makes me feel sad when people hurt each other on religious backgrounds especially in Poland, country that was full of many believes before WWII... Catholic Church have done so much to save lives of Jews... I think in this video reporters more focused on Polish leading party, than religion it self. Judaism, like every minority religion everywhere in the world has not easy path ahead. I hope they can bloom like a wonderful flower in my country and live happy, safe lives.

I feel like the Jewish people have an opportunity to include the Polish people whom died in the same towns as a result of the nazis. For no other reason than inclusion should be an awareness we all hold in our hearts. Forgiveness is key. “You can’t be indifferent. If something’s wrong, you have to fix it.” Chief Rabi So true

Building your own parallel state. The state in which the Jews live is of secondary importance. Their connections, businesses, etc. are the most important thing. This lack of assimilation of Jews is what irritates the native population. This video unfortunately confirms it perfectly.
