A PRAYER FOR PALESTINE FROM A JEW: Let us help them to create something extraordinary,just as we have for ourselves-it is in our best interest to do so.Let us help them to build a home they will love with all their hearts, as we love Israel!Wouldn’t we both be foolish to risk damaging something so precious?We are both great nations…let us never forget this.Let us nurture peace with our enemies, and recognize that they are a mirror…reflecting light unto the nations.

Then I will leave you with this thought:Know your enemy.Do not demonize him or reduce him to what you read or see on TV.Empathize with him.Put yourself in his shoes and ask how you would act.The legitimacy of Israel is not based on what Abbas or anyone else says about us.It is based on the dignity with which we act, and the dignity with which we treat others,even our enemies.That is how Israel will have legitimacy in the eyes of the world.I appreciate your love of Israel.It is a love we share.

Is it the daily or the Shabbat amidah?

@Bruriah1 That is not the only thing that is written in the Bible, and remember there are many commentaries mentioning peace. Creating peace with our enemies is not disobeying Hashem, it is honoring Him. Jacob should have shared his bowl of lentil soup, for Esau was the son of his mother and father. There is enough to go around. It is a non zero sum game.

@Bruriah1 Is it not the case that our inheritance is not just that which we possess, but what we do with these possessions? Our inheritance is also the wisdom and strength to act justly and with compassion. Is this not part of the covenant as well? This is not a lose of faith. It is a reaffirmation of it.

@Bruriah1 We endanger Holy Jerusalem by not finding a way to make peace. They are not hostile because they are evil. They are hostile for practical reasons, which can be addressed...because it is their best option. We must be wise. We must give them the opportunity and resources to change that negative impulse into something positive. We should help them to build a secure home where they can prosper. We put ourselves at risk by not doing so. It is not a zero sum game.

As you know, I’m hardly the only one in the Jewish community who feels this way. We are at an important tipping point, and the voices of those who want peace are getting louder. Bibi and those on the right are acting like spoiled children, as Tom Friedman’s OP ED in the NYTimes today points out.

@Bruriah1 We both share a love for Israel and the Jewish people, and I respect the passion with which you make your case. I feel like I have made a very strong case here, but I will leave it those reading this to decide. My case is simple: In the long run, making peace puts Jews in far less danger and ensures a Jewish nation for generations to come. It also happens to be the ethical thing to do. I pray that we are both blessed with the wisdom to advocate for the right thing.

@Bruriah1 It is both the practical and moral thing to do. We should not just wall them into ghettos (or worse). So I repeat my question, and I hope you will answer it this time: DO WE DO TO THEM WHAT HAS BEEN DONE TO US?

@Bruriah1 As with all things in life, whether something is a blessing or a curse is all dependent on how you look at it. The fact is, that for the foreseeable future, no body is going anywhere. Both peoples are going to occupy this land (assuming one side does not ethnically cleanse the other, which would be a tragedy for both). So we must act like rational adults. So you bring up a good question. How does one remediate a thorn in their side? (cont. below)

@Bruriah1 Like the Jews, the Pals are not monolithic. There are those who are willing to work for peace, so we must empower those voices. Peace will not occur through governments, but through dialogue between people. Change the culture, and you change the politics. This works. I have seen it work. We just need to scale it up. And as far as muggers, we must make an important distinction between a chronic threat and an acute one. Not every threat can be reduced to such a facile metaphor.

@tikkunolam613 If you read Tom Gross' ME Dispatch, you fill find out that the Pals just opened up a new shopping mall, have swimming pools, have posh restaurants like Roots. Peter Hitchens Intstitute for ME Democracy in an article called "Lattes, Beach Barbecues" shows how Gaza is doing extremely well. My how you are so misled!

@Bruriah1 Give them the opportunity to build something valuable, just as we have, and they will be less willing to risk damaging that in a conflict with us. Supporting the Pals to build economic and social institutions are in the long term strategic interests of Israel. It benefits both sides to empower the Pals in ways that help them to concentrate their energies on building prosperity, not destabilizing their home in a conflict with us. (continued below)

@Bruriah1 I have not forgotten... Both Jews and non Jews have been in the land since the beginning. That is a fact. The ancestors of those we call the Palestinians have been in the land for hundreds of years. That is a fact too. We both have legitimate claims.

@tikkunolam613 In the story of Jacob, which for reason you are ignoring, Jacob wanted peace with his brother. His brother came out to kill him. Jacob not only prayed for peace, he also prepared for war. G-d does not want us to be sacrificial lambs. We are obligated to defend ourselves. And you are ignoring the threat to Jewish lives. And that can be fatal for the Jewish people. You can think what you want, but here is where we part company. May G-d grant you wisdom.
@Bruriah1

@tikkunolam613 Let us agree to disagree here. If you value Jewish lives, why put them in mortal danger?

@tikkunolam613 Also, it is the PA and the UNWRA that maintain the refugee camp for over 62 years. Most countries absorb refuges, but the PA and UNWRA want to use these poor people as a propoganda tool. The PA is accountable for these people's lives. In addition, if the PA made peace with Israel - which they don't want - the economics for everyone would improve.

@tikkunolam613 Hashem can see past, present and future. When Hashem made the covenant with us, he knew our behavior. Rather, it is a sin to give away the land of Israel. It says in the Bible to keep the land. The Bible warns us not to allow the enemy to dwell with us because "they will be a thorn in your side". Isn't that what has transpired .

@Bruriah1 How does what your proposing make us safer? You fail to make that case. It seems to me that we put ourselves in jeopardy by not seeking peace. Perpetual conflict is a really bad long term strategy…but you never answered my question… are you proposing ethnic cleansing as a solution, and what do you see as the consequences of this course of action? I am asking because I genuinely want to understand where you are coming from.

as a Jew and an American Indian (indigenous, not India) I see the "plight" of the Israeli Jew, but analogous to the colonial new world, the Palestinians are at war with Israel because it began as a foreign occupation by mostly non-semitic Jews (yes ashkenazis are NOT semites despite the common misnomer "anti-semitic" being applied to any Jew). There were semitic Jews and Muslims (yes, Arabs ARE SEMITIC) living peacefully together before Israel's establishment and you didnt have Palestinians attacking Jews. The Palestinians, like the American Natives have justifiably been attempting to take their land back. Its not about eradicating Jews, its like the European Migrant Wave - its not about the religion, its that they dont belong there on their land AND the fact that the Palestinians did not start the war - the "Israelis" with the help of the West initiated aggression. Just like the white man, sure he is protecting himself NOW, but in truth he started it and brought it upon himself as a result of his actions. In that sense, both sides can justify their aggression. As well, if you lpok at the "rights" of the "children of Israel" to the "Promised Land", well realise that was a covenant with the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL who were semitic tribes. MOST of the Jews that emigrated from Europe and the US (mostly ashkenazi) are not and I repeat, NOT semitic and therefore dont qualify as "children of Israel" hence the reason Israel is viewed as an occupation... and im not saying there arent a bunch of PA's that want to chop every Jews head off ISIS-style, but anyone who TRULY lived in Israel or is TRULY educated on the differing Jewish factions, clans, schools, and tribes knows without a doubt that they want to chop every Muslims head off David-style (when Goliath was beheaded)

@Bruriah1 OK, so let’s wait for the Mosheach to come! There is nothing wrong with that. But in the meantime let’s look at the realpolitik of the situation. Let’s act like adults, not spoiled children. The Palestinians and their ancestors have been custodians of the land for close to 2,000 years. Why can’t we continue to share our bowl of lentil soup until the Mosheach comes? When Mosheach comes, there will be enough soup for everyone to have their own portion.

@tikkunolam613 If you believe that the Bible was written by G-d and G-d told you not to give away the land, then you are disobeying G-d. Do you not understand that?
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 No the Pals want Israel to be judenrein. No the solution resides with Israel's leaders. But we must protect our birthrite. Pure and simple. By the way, do you read the Bible at all?
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 Let us agree to disagree. G-d is all knowing and Torah is his gift to mankind. So if you really understand what is behind Tikkun Olam, what it really means is to make the world a better place by being lights upon the nation. At the same time, G-d has given us instructions on how to live a better life. If you don't believe in what G-d is telling you, then how can you really make Tikkun Olam? Not recognizing G-d's word is not Tikkun Olam.
@tikkunolam613

@Bruriah1 Here is what you risk with such a myopic reading of the Torah: That the greatest crimes which have ever been committed against the Jewish people, will become your sin. You seem a little too comfortable in revisiting those crimes upon the Palestinians. We are better than that. We find another way. We do not ethnically cleanse our enemies. You must consider where your line of reasoning will take you. We have an obligation to make peace.
@Bruriah1

@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 What better evidence is there of your cynical attitude than your own words. It is an attitude which puts Jewish lives at risk. Change the culture and you will change the politics. I never claimed that peace would occur the day after the two nations sign a treaty. It will occur when the attitudes of individuals within each society changes. This change in attitudes will be based on practical conditions (i.e economic and social). (continued below)
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 Let us agree to disagree. G-d promised Abraham that the nation of Israel will belong to the Jews. That covenant stands no matter what our enemies do. And when we lose faith, we invite the Amalek to attack us. The Bible tells us to "appoint watchmen over Jerusalem" and "if I forget thee Jerusalem, may my right hand lose its cunning." T Are you going to forgo your inheritance for a "bowl of lentil stew?" Esau did and thereby forfeited his inheritance.
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 Also have you forgotten that we Jews have been in the land for 3500 years. The people that you claim have been in the land for 2000 years are not the same people. Plague, war, arid conditions have driven them out. Jews on the other hand, settled in Hebron, Jerusalem, and other parts. In 1822, there were 24,000 Jews and no count for "Palestinians"
@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 I am making a PRACTICAL case for peace. The FACTS are that the status quo is not sustainable. It is your IDEALISM, arising from a narrow interpretation of the Bible, which jeopardizes Israel. The only PRACTICAL long term solution is one where both parties are able to prosper. And as far as muggers, the best practical solution is to understand what makes the mugger steal in the first place, and help him find another way to get what he needs. Use your words, not your fists.
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 So you chose to ignore the figures I have given you. Jews have the superior claim over the land in many, many ways. Not only that, Israel has legal force for its claims. The Pals do not. They are basing their claims on UNGA resolutions which are non-binding.
@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 I’ve addressed this several times, but would be happy give more dimension to my response. You fail to make the case of how keeping Palestinians in abject conditions makes Israel safer in the long term. Treating people like that will always come back to bite you (as has been evidenced time and time again). That is the nature of justice. What goes around comes around. ITS A NON ZERO SUM GAME! (continued below)
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 63% of Americans support Israel. They support Israel's right to self determination and they respect Israel's sovereignty. Your viewpoint counters this position and is in the minority opinion.
@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 I just want to understand the logical conclusion of your train of thought. You are suggesting ethnic cleansing, are you not? If this is what you are suggesting, you must take responsibility for it, both before Hashem and your fellow Jews. This is what is at stake. We are at a crossroads with the peace process, and your ‘understanding’ has consequences which must be justified.
@Bruriah1
@Bruriah1 14 лет назад
@tikkunolam613 Let us agree to disagree. There is theory and then there are facts. You have idealism that is not rooted in reality. Although Israel wants peace, the PA et al do not want peace. They want Israel destroyed. For example, if you are walking down the street and a mugger attacks you, what can you do? Let him? Or try to get help?
@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 And you know this because of all the Palestinians you know personally? You are just repeating what you hear, which is the most pernicious kind of confirmation bias, and not based on the facts on the ground. Hamas provides schools, hospitals, etc. Maybe if we helped them to build some of this infrastructure and treated them with dignity, they would be less antagonistic. How would you act if you were in their position?Peace is possible/necessary in this generation.

@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 Your figures and historical narratives are both incorrect and irrelevant. The PRACTICAL question you have not answered is, what do you do with the people who live on the land now? Disenfranchise them? Ethnical Cleanse them? Or do you just keep them abjectly weak in their ghettos so you don’t feel threatened by them? Do we do to them what has been done to us?
@tikkunolam613
@tikkunolam613 14 лет назад
@Bruriah1 Of course Jewish lives are not cheap. Every Jewish neshema is precious! Every Palestinian soul too. I’ve clearly made this case several times, but you are incapable or unwilling of seeing this. Put simply, making peace with Palestinians does not equal murdering Jews. I challenge you to expand your thinking, because your myopic perspective inhibits you from seeing this obvious fact. And you still have not answered my question. I don't think you are able to answer it.
