I know the interviewer must ask certain pre-determined questions. However Elsa was not at ease having to say, "I don't remember" so often. Would have been so much better to just let her talk from the beginning of her memories without all the interruptions. The interviewer later could have back tracked and asked specific questions. At least she could have said well, you were only one, two , or three at the time. Kind of cruel to keep asking questions she obviously could not recall because of her very young age.

This was a special interview among all of the Shoah Foundation testimonies I have listened to so far. For the first 3/4 of the interview, I found myself feeling frustrated - listening to what seemed to be a never ending narrative of "I don't recall" or "I don't remember". The revelation that came clear toward the end was that the effects of the holocaust on survivors were far reaching and relentless throughout their lives (and even transcending generations). That living with the memory of and experience of bigotry, displacement, marginalization, separation, humiliation, having your parents and (extended) family being removed and murdered... All of these testimonies are precious. Holocaust testimonies are not only about the Crematoria of Auschwitz, Majdanek and Treblinka... Many thanks to Elsa Ross for sharing her testimony.

She seems like a lovely lady, but not sure how much can be gleaned when the survivor was so young during the war. She's said (over and over), that she doesn't remember much. Which is understandable given she was only a few years old at the time, probably even more so from the trauma of being separated from her parents. I'm moved by her honesty about the pain and loss of her early life and how it's affected the way she feels about herself. I'm happy that she has her daughter and that they're clearly close.

if you are using Windows, look at the very bottom right hand corner for something representing a speaker icon. Double click on that icon and move the volume slider to the right to make it louder.
