The question of Jews and race, Jews as a race, and Jews not being a race, has filtered through much of western modernity, at least since the 19th century when Race Science became a cottage industry among many European intellectuals. In this lecture we will discuss various ways race has been a defining factor for Jews. This lecture will open with an overview of the question of Jews and race, beginning with when race became a category defining human groups more generally and the way the conception of race in Europe was in part determined by the nature and status of the Jew, and lead all the way to the ambiguous modern understanding of race. This event will set the stage for the more focused discussions to follow.
