Yes definitely! It is not like he is laughing at him but laughing because he is doing a great job entertaining everyone with a combination of comedy, great sound, teaching us some history, and of course it is a funny song. I remember after seeing this, I (a harmonica player for over 12 years) had to rush out and get a Jews/jaw harp. I play that now more then my harmonica. Love it.
Funny how in America the Jew's harp is a novelty instrument, kind of a joke, but in many other countries it's looked on as a serious cultural instrument. My mother used to play the spoons/bones and the Jew's harp, she never knew she was playing two of the oldest instruments in the world.
I think that's mainly because Western Insturments tend to be completely different. I think it's amazing that people so long ago could create such a unique instrument but with such a strange sound and being limited to one note puts on behind most insturments.
Thats not true at all. Its like doing spoons or a base made of a stick tied to a bucket base with a single string, or scratchboard. Or acordian, or harmonica. Its a skill and usually the sound of the South. Everyone knows they are culteral instruments that are rudimemtary but still require talent. Novely instruments are things like kazoos and vuvuzelas. Shit that comes in bright colored plastic at the party store
I had my 1st one when i was 6 or7. Then for about 42 i didnt think of a jawharp. But since 3 years i love playing them. Almost every nite i play one of my harps to relax, have fun and get on my neighbours nerves😂😂
Fair warning- do not look up all the lyrics that have been used with this tune if you don’t want it kind of ruined for you. It was a minstrel show staple.
The modern London version of this sound can be observed in the underground Acid Techno (303) style of EDM music. two different styles sharing very similar tonal and tempo quality's. Fantastic !!!
I only just found out about them this week listening to Olena UUTAi and so impressed. I'm now on revision 6 of my 3D designs and finally getting some good sounds and some sustain. Love it!
Try dig without using lungs, only puffing your cheeks. At first you will only be able to do short burst but try to extend it. Now the trick is timing. When you burst with cheeks sniff in. Eventually you get the hang of that. Now you use that in a rhythm, blowing some dig then sniff and burst, back and forth. It wont be a smooth transition but you can make it sound good by applying a rhythm to it. Eventually you can extend it more and smooth out the sound.
it sounds like a country or old west instrument, like that's what it sounds like it is used for, but this also totally sounds like the sort of thing you could use to recreate techno music
I play that song on my jaw harps..i had no idea what the song was or what the words were.....I just know how the sound goes from maybe cartoons as a kid ..idk......... hahah thnx for that !!!!!!!
I wish they added this song into red dead redemption 2, i just came across one of the townsman in Rhodes and had to find out what this little cite/funky little instrument was and somehow I got here and glad that I did
I had the good fortune to hear him in person about 20 years ago at a festival. It started raining and the whole mob ran to the stage to get out of the rain. And it turned out to be the perfect distance from him! You got so much more out of it sitting at his feet.
I can't say I've ever heard the name or the lyrics to that tune! Nor the name of the instrument I've heard so seldomly. I think I'll impulsively order one of those instruments now :)
The song is called "Turkey in the straw" you can find the full lyrics on the internet, he sang an improvised version in the video. He used a slang pronunciation for some of the words which is probably why you had trouble understanding, this is the way he pronounced them in the video: stomping (stompin), hoisted (heisted), you (yu), yank (ank), whip (whoop), them (em). Heres what he sang in the video: "I went out to milk and I didn't know how, I milked a goat instead of a cow. Saw a chicken in the mud just stomping on the ground, she hoisted up her foot and tensed all around. Turkey in the hay, turkey in the straw, turkey in the straw well how do you know, well we yank them up, shake them up, or any way at all, well whip them up tune called turkey in the straw." "I had a little chicken and she had a wooden leg, and I begged and I begged but she wouldn't let and egg, I poured hot water up and down her leg, and the darned old chicken laid a hard boiled egg. Turkey in the hay, turkey in the straw, turkey in the straw, well how do you know, well we yank them up, shake them up, or any way at all, whip them up a tune called turkey in the straw." If you're still confused about something let me know and I'll try to clarify for you.
I can imagine me attempting to play Rebel Rouser (by Duane Eddy, the Legend of the Strings) on a Jews Harp, if the Jews Harp has been played for 2 millenniums then I probably ain't the first to Play it
