My first time at JFK was in 1987. From the Pan Am Worldport I could see all this fabulous birds, PIA 747, Olympic 747, Alitalia 747, Air France Concorde, TAP L-1011, etc. I was blown away! Memories that will stay with me forever!
Grew up right next to JFK, final approach to 31L was just behind the house. To say I got to witness epic greatness is an understatement. Thanks for the memories.......and don't forget about Flying Tigers!!!! Used to love seeing them
tanay.still better to fell watch this aircraft old is good miss this times better than nowadays plane spotting1hour old is gold memories alive forever.
More great work on the dub in. I flew on a few of those. The ATA L-1011 into MCO. ATA flew a lot of charter flights. Air ALM into Aruba. ALM offered flights from ATL, MIA, and JFK into the ABC islands, Venezuela, Colombia, and many Caribbean locations. Great not-so-vintage-but-still-memorable footage.
The industry began it's decline late '86. A number of carriers disappeared in 1987. By 1988 Pan Am received a blow from the Lockerbie disaster that it never recovered from. By 1990/91 Eastern and Pan Am went belly up and the industry went into free fall by 1992. The best time in the 80s for the industry was 1980-1985 or even 1980-1983.
Pan Am and clean plane, the other noticeable thing in 1987 was noise. Remember watching Fokker F28 in Sydney in early 90's and boy was that noisy. Also the beautiful Tristar.
I remember someone who lived under flight path of old Melbourne airport saying, with the early 727's that people would be almost in pain with the intensity of the sound those planes made. His alarm was the 1st plane to land after curfew ( which was obeyed then). My wife and I went to Melbourne Airport a couple of months ago and saw both the 787 ( going to LAX ,until recently the longest commercial flight, generally a full power take off ) and an A350 going to Hong Kong ( 9 hours) take off so both were heavy. Both were exceptionally, unbelievably quiet. The 787's take roll was ridiculously short; the old 744's used to struggle a bit on hot days but still had runway left but not much.going to miss the noise but people near the flighpaths will not
