Ever have trouble with furling gear while sailing? I'm especially interested in experiences where sailors decided to switch back to hank on or bolt-rope sails.

Ive a spare halyard that exits the mast just underneath the furler genoa halyard. Im thinking of clipping that onto the top of the unit as well so when its at the top if i give it just slight tension it will be almost at ninety degrees to the swivel unit so should stop any wrapping. The only issues i can think of which are really non issues is you need to drop both halyards to drop the sail, not a issue if you leave your sail up. One less halyard for a rigger to go up on but i would have spinnaker, topping lift and mail sail halyards spare anyway. And yes definitely easing tension works on mine too

I would definitely try out that second halyard trick. If that trial works you might be able to achieve a similar effect by installing a "halyard restrainer" (google it) on the primary jib halyard between the primary and secondary halyard. Let me know how it works out!

@@SavvySalt Yes i definitely will let you know. I will overthink it some more first too! Im in NZ and its going into winter so im about to do a haul out/anti foul late May so will be a few weeks before i try it cheers

You saved our bacon today! We followed your procedure to release the tension at the top of the jib and it worked! The only difference was our jib was stuck in the furled position so we used the jib sheets vs. furling sheet. Thank you so much!

Selden/Furlex furlers have the looseness built in. It spreads the point loading of on the bearings of the halyard swivel. They have metal bearings so need to be maintained by washing and greasing. The restrainer is missing which will eliminate the halyard wrapping issue. Your methodology and approach is dead wrong and does not correct the problem. To solve the problem 1/ get on the web and download the manuals from Selden 2/ clean and grease the halyard swivel - do the drum while you are at it. 3/ install the halyard restrainer (Selden supplies 2 with each furler kit)

Good call. This is the kind of stuff that will cost a fortune if you use a rigger. If your handy or can take the time to give it a go you’ll save 90% buying the parts and doing the work yourself. Not for everyone, but very doable. Doing enough research about the issue and you might be able to buy the equivalent parts from a bearing supplier rather than furlex or a marine supplier who will add 50% to the parts cost. That’s boating for you. Your idea of keeping sailing with the quick fix is always the way to go. Don’t interrupt your sailing unless necessary or due to safety. Fair winds.

That was thoughtful troubleshooting. When my furler choked, it was from overwraps and binding of an ageing furling line inside the drum at the bottom. I swapped to a smaller diameter high modulus line with cover stripped off the segment that lives inside the drum. Worked great.

I once pulled an extra length of line out of a jammed up furling drum; somehow it had gotten sucked in off the foredeck and proceeded to tangle things up tremendously. Stripping the cover off would make me nervous after nearly losing a furling line during a difficult overnight delivery: savvysalt.com/blog/a-difficult-november-delivery-to-maine/ (scroll down for image)

Update on this furling equipment. I replaced the 15-year old Selden Furlex gear with a new Harken Mk4. Works like a charm now. I still have a smaller same vintage Selden Furlex on the staysail and it also works fine. I think the Furlex on the jib didn't like getting salty. You're not supposed to wash them unless you also use degreaser and then re-lubricate the Furlex furlers. With a Harken you can just spray it down after a sail to get the salt out of the bearings; no lubrication required.

Thanks buddy! This helped me out a lot. I'm a new sailor and am busy fixing the first boat I ever bought (September last year), so your video definitely helped this ignorant sailor!

had this issue we couldn't drop the sail stuck half way out, had to climb mast tie a line around the mast to the halyard to prevent the halyard from twisting up and jamming. then I replaced with new harken.... 6 years of use.

I had a very hard time getting an inexperienced crew to execute this procedure correctly on a later sail. In hindsight, I should have at least tried finding a way to put some grease in there (apparently there's a grease fitting somewhere) or checked the manual. I probably would have been better served to not roll the jib out again until the furler was turning freely, but I couldn't bear to sail downwind on main only.

too bad you didn't have a handy video demonstrating the procedure...

It would probably have worked better if you had had some Seldén's Furlex grease in the ball bearings.

Thanks - great video. Helps a lot!! My unfurling is difficult and not working. I have to turn manually. But to furl back works fine. What could be wrong?

I have similar issue I took apart the drum and found that the line had wrapped internally so was only able to turn 8n one direction as it would tangle when being pushed around the drum as appose to dragged thus my furler would only work in one direction. Hope that helps

Your dealing with failed swivel bearings. This is a problem that is just going to get worse and you don’t want it to create a situation where you can’t drop the jib. Take it down, pull the swivel off and service the bearings or the bearing races or possibly both. Your fix is temporary at best. Good luck and fair winds.

Thanks for naming the problem. Definitely worth a google. Unfortunately this is a very old furler that is complicated to service; the rigger's quote for servicing this furler was right up there with the replacement cost. It's getting replaced in the spring. We just didn't want it to cut our season short :)
