The Jidai Matsuri is a festival held every year by the Heian Jingu Shrine on October 22, in the city of Kyoto Japan. This day marks the date when Emperor Kanmu made Kyoto the capital of Japan, more than 1200 years ago.
This parade departs from the Kyoto Imperial Garden, goes south on Karasuma Street, east on Horikawa and Sanjo Streets and finally reaches the Heian Jingu Shrine. In this parade, more than 2000 participants are dressed in traditional costumes representing the different historical eras of the city.
The costumes and outfits used on this parade represent the 1200 years of history of the city, going from the most recent period to the time when Kyoto became capital of Japan.
