Jigging for Monster Fall Musky - 8 Fish, 1 Day!

This episode was filmed November 7, 2016. Me and Shawn headed out bright and early into the fog trying to redeem ourselves for the past couple tragic days. We jigged Bondy Bait's all day, probably my favourite way to target musky. Love how they hit, except when they get you at the top! But we landed 8 fish, 2 of them were unfortunately snagged, still fun to put in the boat though! Hope you guys enjoyed.

Damn. That early morning fog and calm water was killer. That’s a great day on the water. One question is it harder to get deep hookset while jigging? Seems like it
@DaneLaJoy
@DaneLaJoy 5 лет назад
Lol yes usually it is. The only way it’s easy to get a hook-set is if the Musky hits your bait at the bottom of your jig, then you’re already set up to pull up with all that leverage. If the fish hits on the way up, whether it’s half way or even worse at the top... how are you supposed to hook-set when your rod is already in the air? It’s tough, but you find a way. Lot of fish are lost on those ones!

For the guy that asked about the St. Clair, I have fished it for years. I think it has more current than the Detroit? The river channel is deep and then there are flats next to it that are shallow. It has weed edges on the flats that we cast to. The muskies can be anywhere and usually there are some up shallow and some in the deep channel. The idea is to keep the boat on the river channel edge while casting to the flats. So, theoretically, the guys jigging should be down in the deeper channel or channel edge while the swimming lures are lobbed up shallower. The boat should be in 18 - 25 feet but it will be pretty shallow one cast length away.

Awesome Video... watched it a few times... its that time of year, do you have any tips for a new musky hunter ?... I live close to the North channel up near the St Clair River, the structure there is pretty similar to the structure you are fishing near the Sand Piles (ive fished that area a lot back in the day for walleye)..Im wondering if the Musky pile up , up here like they do near the sand piles... lots of vids out front of the sand piles, what type of structure is it, that it attracts soooo many muskys to it ?
@DaneLaJoy
@DaneLaJoy 7 лет назад
+Michigan Crown Molding Tony thank you, appreciate it! Not sure how the St. Clair river is in terms of numbers of musky. Obviously Lake St. Clair is the lake that holds so many musky, and not Huron. So fishing towards the St. Clair end of the river would be much better I would say. I don’t know how wide the mouth is, and what it looks like in terms of structure. But our water at the mouth by the Sandhills is 10ft-40. Going from shallow near the shore to deepest part of the river. Fish can be caught in any depth. Fall is by far the best season. If you can find shad, not sure if they’re really present near the mouth, or if you’ve noticed them jumping in rivers that pour into the SCR that are near the mouth, but if you can find them, you’ll probably find musky. You can start drifts in close and maybe do a couple 20 minute drifts, no fish, move a little deeper and repeat. But as for the Sandhills, it’s pretty sandy/muddy/rocky bottom. Current is too heavy for vegetation. Musky come from the lake and move into the mouth of the river looking for the shad, which are looking for warmer water found in the nearest outflow river that pours into the Detroit river. Shad are also up in the super shallow beach water right along the rock piles, where the musky also hunt the drop off of that very heavily. Hope this helps. Cheers!
@michigancrownmolding
@michigancrownmolding 7 лет назад
Hey thank you for the reply.. the St Clair river is very similar to the Detroit in terms of structure (now that you cleared my question up), but, Lake St Clair dumps into the Detroit , but its opposite up here, the St Clair dumps into the lake.. Ive been fishing the shoreline the last few weeks, casting into 4 to 10 foot water, dragging our baits towards the boat out in 15 to 30 feet.. nothing but a few pike as of yet but weve seen a few boats casting large baits, and seen a few boats jigging Bondi's so we are assuming the Musky congregate up here..whats interesting tho, is the boat launch (deckers landing/state launch) is smack in the middle of a good run/structure similar to what youre fishing in Detroit, so, its pretty easy to fish up here, launch the boat, and as soon as you leave the canal youre in the river. and after a mile drift youre in the lake..... I will post back here our progress throughout this fall, as Ill be going out fishing ALOT the next month or two....... mean time, good luck to yall, and thanks again for your help, I subbed.

nathan cook thanks Nathan! Yes most definitely leave the fish in the net to take the hook out, especially in the warmer seasons. For release I don't think it's necessary or beneficial to keep it in the net, as long as you hold the fish upright until it swims off! And Yes that's the Big Kahuna Net by Frabill. Biggest net they have. Monster net!

Nice. I live in Florida so I never catch to cool Musky. Are those boats out there fishing Musky? That's a lot of pressure. So close to shore. What depth is that?
@DaneLaJoy
@DaneLaJoy 7 лет назад
+MuahMan sweet! I fish in Florida too for shark and baitfish for shark. I have some videos online if it and currently editing one. As for this, a lot of these boats are targeting walleye, a smaller predator fish around here, good for eating. Still quite a few boats out for musky though. We do fish close to shore, our lake is very shallow. I think it's average depth is something crazy like 8' and deepest natural depth like low 20'? We can catch them right along the wall. We fish them 10'-30' approx! Cheers!

@DaneLaJoy
@DaneLaJoy 7 лет назад
+BalexBran hey man! Thanks for the positive feedback. I do appreciate it. You know the fish is snagged by the way it fights. It is a much harder, more direct power/pull. When you snag the fish in the belly, it has his head and tail free to move back and forth to provide it more power to thrust freely. If you fair hook it in it's mouth (head) it loses the ability to wiggle hard which it has to do in collaboration with its tail to get going hard. Plus you also steer the fish closer to you or ways it doesn't want to go which tires it out! Many, many reasons! Hope this helps, cheers!
