We take to the ice on a single digit night in February in search of Smelt. By using lanterns, we are able to bring up massive schools just under the ice where they aggressively attack our jigs and flies. This video explains everything you need to know to catch smelt using standard panfish ice fishing gear. Be sure to watch until the end to learn how to clean them as well.

Used to fish Higgins lake for smelt. Big shanty group when fish were biting. Lights pointed down in the water.

I grew up fishing Houghton and Higgins in the summer up in Northern Michigan, if that's the Higgins you're talking about. I still have a picture of 10 year old me with a 28 inch walleye out of Houghton I caught on a jig and leech.

have you ever tried chumming for smelt? when I gut and debone my fish I save the red meat and bones (from pike mostly) and freeze them to grind for my dogs, which I cook and feed them, but I was thinking it might also make good attractant for fish, if frozen and hung in a hole it would melt slowly and fall towards the bottom which I think would attract them to that area. Also do you find that most of the smelt in a school tend to be the same size? Like if you start catching 4" but would rather catch larger smelt, is it better to find a new spot or do the larger fish hang out in the same school as the smaller ones?

It seems like the schools are fairly uniform in my experience, within an inch or so anyway. The chum idea would work I'm sure, but it seems like if the smelt are active, the lights on the ice are all you really need. They are definitely meat eaters though, so I'm sure they'd go after the chum, with a try 👍

How deep are the during the summer? Thanks

They go deep to find cool water, around the thermocline I would guess. I only fish them in the winter.

Much easier to net the fish. That way I get to eat when I am hungry

It is easier to net them, but catching them this way is a lot of fun too 👍
