Pre-Order Critical Role: 'Call of the Netherdeep' herewww.amazon.com/stores/page/6C...
Todd Kenreck sat down with Matthew Mercer to talk about the upcoming book "Call of the Netherdeep."
Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep
Can You Change Fate?
An epic Critical Role campaign for the world’s greatest roleplaying game.
The greed of mortals has awakened a powerful entity long thought destroyed. For eons, this mighty champion of the gods has been imprisoned in the darkest depths of Exandria. His name has been forgotten, as have his heroic deeds. Languishing in despair, he calls out for new heroes to save him.
Inspired by the campaigns of the hit series Critical Role, this adventure begins in the Wastes of Xhorhas and leads to the glimmering oasis-city of Ank’Harel on the continent of Marquet, and from there into a sunken realm of gloom, corruption, and sorrow known as the Netherdeep. Above it all, the red moon of Ruidus watches, twisting the fates of those who have the power to shape the course of history.
Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep contains seven chapters of thrilling adventure, new creatures and magic items, and a poster map of Ank’Harel.
First major adventure module within Critical Role’s world of Exandria, taking players from levels 3-12.
Multi-continental story that spans the scarred Wastes of Xhorhas, introduces the continent of Marquet, and eventually plunges players into the Netherdeep-a terrifying cross between the Far Realm and the deep ocean.
Bursting with lore and all new art depicting Exandria.
Includes new magic items and creatures and introduces new rival NPCs.

@@pzalterias5154 Not if something else is replaced with that idea. From what I gather of the world, many Exandrian societies actually still view these races as evil anyway. So there’s still interesting potential for conflict.

@@pzalterias5154 Not really - both Wildemount and Eberron have a WIDE variety of different cultures, almost every town has a unique flavour precisely because they posit interesting questions like "how would an entire country of 'monsters' work?" or "what would a mixed elf/dwarf culture look like?" or "how would Drow manage to live on the surface?". Much more interesting than the fairly generic Realms IMHO - which has a few iconic locations but the vast majority of towns are indistinguishable. Also, gotta love dinosaur-riding halflings :)

I'm so excited to be starting a campaign in this setting. I haven't watched much Critical Roll, so I'll be going in basically blind. I absolutely adore the setting, as I have a heart for monstrous characters. My current character is actually half kraken, which could be interesting later on given that there's Deep in the adventure title.

Out of curiosity, if the monstrous races grow wheat and fish and hold festivals and are just like everyone else, what makes them much more interesting characters than a human from Rexentrum? It doesn't seem conclusive to me that role-playing an orc is all that much more interesting or challenging than role-playing a human if the orc is a docile, lawful type who acts and behaves just like anyone else. It's a little demeaning to ridicule someone for making "boring characters" just because they want to imagine themselves as human and not as a furry little gremlin. Since everyone is the same, it's all cosmetic in the end.
@jackal59
@jackal59 Год назад
A DM's inability to explain what made Jigow work as a starting point for many other races is a big part of what led me to bail out on a _Call of the Netherdeep_ game. The other part was that it was a paid online game, but the paid session 0 consisted of the DM reading from the setting guide for fifteen minutes and then saying, "O.K., make your characters and then feel free to log out when you're done." I've got no problem with people wanting to play whatever race they want. I do have a problem with handwaving away the difficulty of playing particular races in particular locations, which is what the DM I dealt with basically did. Maybe the setting book doesn't do that, although I agree that if all it does is to characterize races other than orcs, half-orcs, drow, and goblinoids as "boring," then screw it. That's as bad as saying that no one has a problem with tieflings (some people do; that's part of what makes them fun to play).

@michaelbell4930
@michaelbell4930 2 года назад
I feel like we can safely say that’s not gonna happen. I mean there’s nothing stopping you from just DOING that in a Exandria campaign, right? But that is a facet deeply rooted in the setting. To make another version of that would mean a whole lotta rewriting. Because by this idea, that whole little town is evil which makes that a very different adventure all together.

Sounds like fun, but to be honest, I miss the days when the races were inherently distinct. There's just such a big difference between non-human player characters now and before. Now everyone are basically just humans but different-looking, and there's nothing strange about seeing a community with a dozen or more different races living together.
@akrumvatum1627
@akrumvatum1627 2 года назад
Yeah, often I see players who play non-humans acting human-ish, having strong connection to humans and their culture rather than being stranger on the strange land. On the other hand I hate when players roleplay being over exited being diffrent race than humans, like "Oh my gosh I'm a Tiefling" which for me translates to (I've been Tiefling for 18+ years straight and it still amuses me). It's like diffrent races are just human souls trapped in wrong bodies.

@@EldritchMcPie they didn’t word themselves perhaps very well, but I understand what their point was. Being an Orc/Tiefling/Elf/Lizard doesn’t make much a difference if basically all humanoids are just humans but reskinned. Those older distinct separations were part of the flavor of the universe.
