Jill Biden: This is the crucial financial advice I want all young women to know 

My advice to younger women is. 1. Disney Princess movies are fictional and there's no Princes to marry and provide for you. 2. Have two bank accounts one is personal and the other is joint. This is the age where joint incomes are necessary. 3. Seek relationships that are equal and women are not property of husbands. 4. Work is key to financial independence.

Women *please research laws* before you move somewhere. I made the mistake of letting my now ex husband talk me into moving from Colorado to Texas so that I could get ‘help’ from his family with my son so I could go back to work. Long story short, it didn’t end well, and the custody laws are horrible. My son with health issues is paying the price. His father isn’t required to visit him regularly and his father skips months at a time and breaks plans last-minute and with all the counseling it’s still a struggle for my little son to deal with. But then if my son is upset and breaking out with hives over having to see his father who’s like a stranger, he doesn’t have a choice. In fact, if he doesn’t visit his father, I could lose custody and go to jail. There’s also a cap on child support that won’t even cover the average rent for a 3-bedroom apartment there. It also took several months for Texas OAG to get any payments to me. Luckily I’m educated and had a career before being forced out of work for years to care for a special needs child without any support, and I don’t rely on that money to survive, or we’d have been homeless for a while. Hopefully the right for women to work and go to school isn’t lost in Texas as well with Republicans trying to privatize public education etc. They do make it very difficult for women with children already, as reliable and affordable childcare is non-existent there.

Yes, be financially independent from your loved ones by learning and working in a skilled career, but also always protect yourself with 2 means of contraception used simultaneously, one of which should be a barrier method, because having children before you are ready to support them will impoverish you and can tie you to an abusive person more than any other connection. Be sure you can trust your partner before you bring children into the union.
