Jill is the only one out of all the Prince protegees with the strongest, most interesting voice. It's a real pity he didn't put her out "in the front" more. She was definitely not a "plane jane" and deserved to be up there right beside him. She sang in so many of his songs. Despite loving Prince so much, I still think Jill was really not treated fairly. Her voice, charisma and whole persona is amazing!
Listening to this again and again lately. I think Jill Jones really pulled this off in a way that few would be able to. She kept the essence of a Prince song, but added new texture to it. It has grown more and more on me. Love it!
Her debut album, Jill Jones, from which this song is from is absolutely brillant start to finish! Clearly one of the best vocalists Prince ever worked with. It makes you wonder why Prince wasted time on someone like Carmen Electra (I'm genuinely sorry Carmen, but it just had to be said). I have been listening to her debut all this week and life has been just a little bit better because of it. Great music can do that. Jill Jones' music always does that!
Listen to Taja Sevelle. She covered Prince's "Wouldn't You Love To Love Me" and "If I Could Get Your Attention". She's amazing. She's from Minneapolis. Prince signed her to Paisley Park. Check her out. She's dope.
This song should've topped the charts. I really don't recall this album getting promoted. Such a shame. Granted 1987 was a talent fest, but this song was as good as any top 40.
Jill Jones is sooooo talented, people have no idea, She's a friend of mine. Her mom used to manage Tina Marie , who opened for prince when Prince started getting more and more famous, and jill sang back ground vocals for Tina, to make a long story short Jill met Prince thru her mom. Also Jill has a daughter Zuzu whos sings and writes songs, check her out on sound cloud sometime.
Thanks for the tip ! This is thee best protégé Prince ever had , her voice is too powerful to be teifled with . idk why she didn't blow up I listened to this every day . she's the only one imo that could pull off a Prince song and even surpass his vocal abilities
It's amazing how some artists create a sound signature that even years later you can instantly recognize it.I vaguely remembered this song from childhood and for some reason it just came on my mind.I just typed in "Baby your a trip"not even knowing for sure if that was title.I thought that was one of the main parts of the chorus and there it was.As a kid I didn't pay attention to style or the.sound the way you do when you listen to music as you get older so I was so amazed to hear the signature Prince sound in the song.
I have never heard of this artist. I'm here cause I heard this was one of the song that will be on the new Prince album. I imagine her performance of this song is exactly how the Prince demo of this song is with no deviation
Jill suffered from the same thing most artist do that prince writes and produces, the songs are great. but the artist never comes across as being that which the songs convey. No one has. Except the Time. Their the only artist to have hits during, and after Prince. I purchased this album when it came out. It has quite a few jams, the whole album really.
I've only read about Jill Jones, but never heard any of her music----she was just the girl that Morris Day kept shutting the door on in Purple Rain. Kind of like this song, though.
Alright...mike keep your composure try not to faint over her mesmerizingly poise I can't resist her aura and fineness Ooo Wee shit...I needed you back in those days steamy as Bridgette Nielsen ain't no letting up saying how much I love you everyday Violet Blue smooches!
She has a lot of passion and really puts a lot into this song. I do think either Prince should have kept it or she should have sung this when they first met.
Now see here most don't know She=Jill Jones was a ghost writer on alot of Prince songs. No she wrote this entire song herself no Prince except his influences.
There were ladies Prince worked with because they were talented, others because they were sexy and his type, and a few were both. Jill Jones was extremely talented and was obviously his type. If anyone can go back in time to only talk to Prince, encourage him to foster talent rather than push pretty girls who can’t sing.
This is definitely not a bad vocal performance. It was quite good and should not be discounted at all. That being said, after hearing the "Originals" album, He should have kept this one for himself.
She reminds me a little bit of Sheena Easton from a visual standpoint, and like Teena Marie vocally. I wonder if people in the industry held that against her because she didn't distinguish herself enough.
