Agree. They were fair minded critics, for the most part. I know that I miss them, even when I didn't always agree with one or both of them. But, more times than not, I did.👍👍
That’s such a nothing thing to say you’re just doing that thing people do where they pretend all of Hollywood is a certain way when they aren’t. There’s so many examples of famous people admitting they were wrong in some situation it isn’t even worth listing I mean they’re just people Lmao idk why everyone acts like Hollywood is some group that’s actively doing something, it’s a PLACE, a place most of these famous people don’t even live in
Too bad they never apologized for their “Women in Peril” specials, on which they were basically calling for censorship of slasher movies. It was a direct reaction, that came from Roger’s wife, who was very vocal on certain topics where they lived. They would dog on movies, as well as directors and others working, even though they hadn’t seen most of the movies. It’s the low point in both their careers, as they were so outspoken about movies not being censored, or getting the stigma of an X, or NC-17 rating, as it would usually kill a movie.
They were both a couple of old ladies. Major prudes…. I always took their opinions with a grain of salt no matter how entertaining they were. Diskette was usually the worst when it came to that sort of thing but Roger definitely had his moments. I just listened to him ranting about how bad Kids in the Hall, ‘Brain Candy was’… They were idiots about all genres not just horror. I still miss their reviews though
And his dad died the same year and didn't get to see him get famous. He signed a million dollar check for his dad and buried him with the check when he passed away. What a terrible feeling to be on top of the world and the one person you tried to prove yourself too is gone and isn't there to experience
So wonderful. I met Gene in Chicago once and he was the NICEST man ever. I was a 21 year old Gate Agent for American Airlines at the time it was my first day on the job. Sooo many angry faces and grumbling from people trying to get on their flight. And Gene had a First Class Ticket I didn’t know how to process in this archaic system AA used at the time. It was that eternally long 60 seconds (I remember this like it was yesterday.) waiting for a supervisor. He just smiled and said “You’re doing a great job.” I’m 50 yrs old sitting in a Starbucks typing this and remembering how kind and peaceful he was in that 3-4 minutes he was stuck with me. In my time on this planet, Gene Siskel was the kindest “stranger” I have ever met. This was in 1995. We would lose him only about 4 years later. I can’t help but feel emotional looking at his kind smile and his intellectual and lovely energy. You see it only takes a minute to be kind. He was such a great man making a young person just out of the military feel human and valued. YOU will always be valued and remembered Mr Siskel. Rest in Power Sir.
Hell yeah, wed go to get movies and before we get there my mom would say no ace ventura cause id get it every time. Eventually got for bday or xmas or somethin
I was over at a friends house when i was like 4 or 5 years old. He had HBO and the clip of him and the rhino was on and i didnt know who jim carrey was at the time. I remember laughing so hard i fell on the floor. Never seen anything like that and i soon became obsessed with Carrey. Something ill always remember.
@@AlwaysAwesome001 Having an opinion isn't wasting one life's on hate. The fact is that they didn't hate. They both loved cinema. And having a love of cinema meant they got to do something they love. All because they gave a film you liked a thumbs now doesn't mean they're full of hate. It's just an opinion. They don't need to validate anyone.
@@rickytrottier5505 They both hated each other for many years. Ego and envoy were driving factors. Their friendship were thin at best. Siskel didn't tell Ebert he was dying ...says it all. It was classic "friendship" for money and fame. I think Ebert towards the end of his life had many regrets and was trying to make up time in the relationship. Too little too late. Sad. Chicago smug Democrats. Whoopie. 🥱
@@ursafan40 Hitchcock once told a critic, are you criticizing the movie I made or the movie you like me to make? Looking back through the decades I realize the movies that made stars like Carrey, Steve Martin, Woody Allen, Mel Brooks and even Burt Reynolds extremely popular were slammed by the critics. Many of them like Carrey tried to become “artists” in order to win approval of these pretentious twerps, but lost that spark that we loved about them. Even Kubrick and Hitchcock were never really celebrated as the great artists as the were earlier in their career. Stallone, Mat Daman, Ben Afleck won Oscars but not Kubrick or Hitchcock!
In the 80's, siskel and Ebert were giants. No one today can compare. Their influence on media was so great; a vhs having "two thumbs up!" was everything. Ebert was awarded a Pulitzer for good reason.
Roger Pradactor didn't commit suicide.......... He was murdered😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 when he moves his head while doing it is one of the best scenes in the movie lmao
‘Ace Ventura’ was literally one of the pinnacle films that was a lining in my childhood. Anywhere I went during that time as a kid, I would quote the hell out of it, and I even did impressions and emulated the character of Ace regularly during that time. I was 9 when it came out, and it’s still one of my favorite comedy films. That and ‘Dumb and Dumber’ 1994 was a good year my dudes.
One of the most incredible scenes I have ever experienced is Jim Carey impersonating Andy Kaufman impersonating Elvis Presley in “Man On The Moon.” I am 68 years old. I watched Kaufman’s stand-up, in Taxi, and on TV interviews. Jim Carey freaking became Andy Kaufman in the movie.
From the first time I saw him in a movie, I knew that I was seeing a wildly talented actor. However, I haven’t liked/loved all of his films, but there’s no denying that he is insanely versatile and creative, and he isn’t limited to film. I am a huge fan of his artwork as well. I love the style, vibrancy, colors, composition, statements he makes, and the sheer fearlessness that he communicates with a brush brush, and I find it deeply impactful and satisfying. I wish I could afford to own some of his work, but that’s just never going to happen. He is clearly a very intelligent man, and I always enjoy hearing him in his interviews because he has such a unique perspective on whatever he is discussing. I sincerely wish him joy and happiness because he really deserves it.
Love your life Jim Carrey, you keep rock n' and roll'n it was a pleasure growing up as a huge fan of cinema getting to watch your career in real time. I lived during the days of Jim Carrey and Robin Williams there will never be another Jim Carrey or Robin Williams, they broke the mold.
He is one of the greatest of all times. All 3 of my kids can quote one liners from every single Jim Carrey movie. He has sure made us laugh over the years.
He's brought so much laughter and joy to the world, and I was alive to have experienced his greats in the cinema when they first came out, I feel so honoured
They said AV was no good, rediculious...that is an iconic movie and the second one was just as iconic, watched those both on repeat back when they came out...
If you see dumn and dumber a scene where he's telling Daniel about going to aspen and being tired of being nobody's and having nobody. You saw him as a serious actor
When ace ventura(original) hit the theatres, it was electric. The most intense laughter erupted within moments of the opening credits and scenes…it was spontaneous…the whole theatre roared…talk about setting the table..what a comedic masterpiece..one liners everywhere…slapstick and physical manipulation at its peak..etx
The movie where he loses his memory was truly an acting movie. The scene where he watches a movie and he remembers who he was is such an acting prowess.
I really didn’t care much for the first movie I saw of Jim Carrey’s. But I later changed my mind as well. Incredible energy and amazing depth as an actor. And his work his characters on the Wayans Brothers was awesome!
With exceptions, Ebert and Siskel weren't big fans of grossout comedies (me too, tbh), so it's no surprise they didn't like Ace Ventura, the film that made Carrey a star. But they loved The Truman Show, especially Gene. It came out when he was in the hospital for his brain cancer. For that week's ep, Ebert was in the studio, and Gene called in to say how much he loved the movie and how happy it had made him.
“Everyone wants a Slinky, you gotta buy a slinky. Slinky, slinky GO SLINKY GO! Almost made it!!! ” I know it’s from when nature calls but… easily my favorite scene in any movie
They said thumbs down to dumb and dumber and if they could see what comedies have become, which is extinct, they would realize that DUMB and Dumber is the Citizen Kane of comedies.
Actually if I remember gene gave that movie thumbs up but ebert thumbs downed it. But even though they warmed up to Carey they still doubled down and said they stand by the thumbs down they gave to Ace Ventura
A lot of kids hurting back then man….. Ik of child soldiers who watched your films along with Jackie Jan films etc but man, your silliness gave a bunch of tortured souls a few moments to laugh and forget their woes.
Im a 1984 baby and my childhood was far richer with this man’s comedic genius. Everyone quoted lines from Ace Ventura 1&2, the Mask,Liar Liar on and on. Jim Carrey thank you for breaking the mold and being the best!
What I really like about Ebert and Siskel (especially Ebert) is that they were fair to all movies. Regardless of genre. Unlike snobby critics who automatically disown entire genres or just immediately dismiss movies that aren't artsy or Oscar baity, both those guys understood that there are different movies for different people and even if they didn't personally like a movie they still could see who that movie would appeal to and respect that. They also were willing to admit that they looked at movies the wrong way later on and reevaluate them because peoples views change. Wish more critics were like them.
I love the way Jim Carrey conducts himself. Behind the manic comedy and unorthodox success is a giving human being. He puts himself out there genuinely and we all get to enjoy what he does, whether he gets the accolades or not.
Sister & Ebert were the only critics I ever watched regularly. Not because I was depending on either of them to decide what movies I watched. I love listening to them talk about a medium they loved. This is a great story to hear from "Ace".
Can you imagine what they would say and review movies of today with all the franchise type movies of today? They came abd left at about the right time. Still miss them
So, I was sitting with my professor and a handful of grad students at a table in a famous tavern in the Loop in 1985 when the maître d' hurried over to us and demanded that we remove ourselves to another table because Roger Ebert was bringing his entourage in any moment. My elderly, very mild-mannered and infinitely polite British professor told him to f*ck off (in a very polite voice). 20 minutes later, Ebert himself waddled over and apologized profusely. We were still dumbstruck at our prof's unprecedented vulgarity, but this just made the whole experience even more surreal.
The joy you bring to entertainment is obviously awesome! Just two arrogant people that don't know how to laugh that's on them not you! Thanks for helping me laugh my ass of I don't have an ass anymore your awesome!
Glad they recanted their statements about Jim, he's such a dynamic actor and has amazing range. Happy they said it publicly as well and did an entire show about just him.
When both Jim carrey and spike Lee speak so highly of siskel and ebert speaks volume of their impact on the history of cinema. They only spent a fraction of the 100+ years reviewing movies but that fraction did so much.
I had a lot of respect for Siskel and Ebert because they were honest. Even some of the biggest hits like Home Alone were panned by them but at least you knew it was their honest opinion. They couldn’t be bought and gave legit reviews on the movies. I didn’t always agree with them but I respected that it really was their honest take
Ace Venture, both of those movies are classic! I have watched them so many times and I laugh like crazy every time!! That is the magic of Jim!! He was my childhood.
The fact that this man was never nominated for an Oscar, not for Truman Show, not for Man On the Moon, not for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, is a travesty and substantiation that Hollywood does not recognize comedic genius!
I feel these guys both admitted when they were wrong about certain comedians with talent. Although Gene didn’t live long enough he liked Adam Sandler’s performances in Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore. He didn’t like the movies but realized Sandler had potential. Eventually Ebert saw that with Punch Drunk Love. I like that Carrey saw the humility with these guys. They did their jobs which was to give opinions but that doesn’t mean they were dismissive of good talent.
The Ace Venture movies are fucking gold what were they talking about? Maybe I have rose tinted glasses on cause I watched those 2 movies so many times as a young child but I still love those movies to this day
We are STILL quoting funny lines from all of his movies and characters on In Living Color! If you've never seen Jim Carrey with pigtails and a leotard, well you just weren't raised right 😆 🤣 😂
Who really knew what they were seeing at first? I found him hilarious, but he's consistently made me laugh and cry for so long, such depth. A sad reflection on Hollywood that he's given up.
Siskel and Ebert were easily the best film critics. Unlike other famous critics who deliberately tried to overshadow the films they reviewed (like Pauline Kael), Siskel and Ebert showed genuine class, intelligence, a true love of cinema, a non-judgmental approach to criticism, and like Jim Carrey said, an ability to humbly admit when they were wrong. Both critics did revise their old opinions of films when they realized a film had grown on them. They accepted certain films need repeat viewing to appreciate
I'm glad Siskel & Ebert made amends with Jim before they went to the great theater in the sky. Jim is truly one of a kind and comedy would never be the same without him. We need him now more than ever! Great story!
Just goes to show the integrity and class that Gene and Roger had. I almost always agreed with Roger’s critiques. But even a fair minded intelligent guy can make mistakes, I’m glad they made things right.
