Circa mid-to-late '90s, about the same time as Regal signed for WCW, I went to see a Marty Jones (Regal's teacher) promotion in Bristol, England. Marty was a legendary face on World of Sport televised wrestling, which was pulled from broadcast schedules around ten years prior. During the interim decade he'd nurtured an excellent heel persona, reciprocating great heat with his audience. I was milling around in no particular hurry as the the audience filed out of the exits after the show. Suddenly the unmistakably distressed shriek of a woman just out of view in the foyer. I picked up the stride and made a beeline to the threat. The woman was stood upright and apparently physically unharmed but visibly shaken and staring with consternation at something behind me. It was Marty - still in wrestling attire, stood at a stage door, remonstrating incoherently and cacophonously with the departing audience, a couple of burly security men holding him back. I was immediately prone to the most enormous fixed grin and stood gazing in admiration, looking over my shoulder once or twice to appreciate the horrified reaction. I must have inadvertently dissipated some of the anxiety by placing myself directly between the victim and the perceived assailant. Victim composed herself, audience continued to file out, I was still stood grinning at Marty. When the audience had completely dispersed, Marty turned around to go back through the stage door, looked over his shoulder, reciprocated my grin and gave me a wink. Priceless.

@@pizzahighfive2612 slightly misguided criticism here. It’s not about cheap heat being wrong or offensive it’s about it being easy. Sometimes too easy. The opposite of cheap heat is Ole Anderson, where you believe it. Ric Flair’s “Shut up, Fat Boy!” (To the non-existent Fat Boy in the crowd) was cheap heat. It wasn’t wrong but it was easy and it had purpose, to keep him as a heel to the audience.

Dunno, might get slayed for being an unpopular opinion, but MJF as good as he is, I can't deny that he feels a bit forced, often. He is good, but not that good.

@@natebaxter9551 I get where you are coming from. And there is a difference between booing someone because it’s out of respect/cool thing to do vs booing someone because you genuinely dislike them. I could argue(but maybe they are doing their job either that’s much better or worse)that Roman Reigns and the Usos get more genuine heat. But the reason I bring up could be doing their job better or worse is I dunno if it’s a good thing that I dislike the Bloodline to the point where I don’t even want to see them on TV because I already know the outcome more or less. Looks like Roman Reigns is gonna lose, Usos come in to interrupt, Roman Reigns does a Spear/Superman punch and wins. And the cycle goes on and on. Talk about annoying and obnoxious.

@@bighand1530 it's the same thing with MJF. Cheap insults, beatdown by faction that only exists for these segments, imply Wardlow heat, repeat. Wrestling in general is predictable these days.

Exactly.. the other example of what Jim described that I can think of in recent times in that Elias and Kevin Owens promo in Seattle. Yeah that was kind of an easy way to get booed, but the crowd’s reaction was so fresh and intense for today’s WWE product that I didn’t mind it…

@@kunalwadhwa5537 that is a good recent example. I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned as bad cheap heat, but I think it's awful when real-life tragedies are involved. I know Jim's criticised a miscarriage on RAW before, but what I can think of is Randy telling Rey Eddie's in hell. Sheamus and Jeff Hardy drug angle. Seth and Dean making their IC title feud about Roman's cancer. Those are some examples of bad cheap heat I can think of imo. MJF and CM Punk bringing up Britt Baker at the start of their feud was also cringe.

Elias is the new King of Cheap Heat.

When the Super Showdown came to Melbourne, Elias shit-canned the Collingwood Magpies (based in Melbourne's inner suburbs) for losing the Australian Rules grand final. And, to Elias' bewilderment, most of the 98,000-strong crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Ground actually cheered! Why? Because as anyone who knows anything about Aussie Rules (especially us Melburnians) will tell you, Collingwood are a team that Australian (Rules) Football League fans either love (as in support) or absolutely hate. (FYI the team that defeated the Magpies in the grand final that year was West Coast Eagles, who are based in Perth, & are probably slightly less hated in Melbourne...)

@@trahapace150 this is a fair criticism. I kinda wish he and Cornette had worked together more in MLW. He needs more polish, and he's not going to get it in AEW.
