Ever try to re-watch the old WWF cartoon? It's like it was made by a drunk chimp with crayons and a 13 year old kid doing the voices. It was written by three first graders. No wonder my dad liked watching Loony Toons and NWA wrestling on Saturday mornings. Bugs Bunny and Ric Flair. As a kid, I had to grow to understand that my dad appreciated quality. But yeah, as a kid I loved that cartoon. It had me on the edge of my seat.

I met JYD when I was probably 13. It was a great thrill. He was hanging out by himself behind some bleachers at the hockey arena, and I just happened upon him. It was just me and him and I chatted with him for about 10 minutes. I'll never forget that experience. Probably the first famous person I'd ever met. Then in WWE, as was always the case, no acknowledgement of their pasts was acknowledged. Dog was placed in a program with Harley Race, Reed with Koko B. Ware and took the "Natural" name and dyed his hair blonde (pre-cursor to Shelton Benjamin), and Duggan was backing The Killer Bee's in their feud with The Iron Sheik & Nicolai Volkoff. Watts was in the smaller towns at matches in the early 80's through 85 or 86 on occasion. In Monroe, Watts would walk around near the ring and talk to Grizzly and occasionally Boyd Pierce which to this day have no idea why Boyd was at the house shows. Near bell time Watts would make his way to the back and we would see him watching some of the matches.
@MisterBeauJanGels
@MisterBeauJanGels Год назад
At one point, wrestling was Boyd's full-time gig. He was the ring announcer and occasional play-by-play announcer in Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston every week, plus he traveled to Shreveport every two weeks to announce for McGuirk and later Watts. His side hustle was marketing novelty items related to the business. Obviously, it makes sense for him to travel to shows on off days to fill one role or another, usually the ring announcer.

Watching the Junkyard Dog's upper body development deteriorate before leaving for the WWF is one of the saddest things to watch. It got to the point where even Butch Reed called JYD out on TV for not working out and essentially calling him lazy. Then of course there's Bill Watts lighting into Dog on TV after he left for the WWF and how he let the fans down with his departure and no-showing dates. JYD went from being the biggest hero in the territory to the reason we can't have nice things fairly quick in Mid-South.

JYD Still Lives Here#RCnf
@danoc51
@danoc51 3 года назад
I'll always remember JYD's very unique introduction to the Los Angeles territory, which was probably in the mid-1970's. It was the weekly television taping at the small KCOP TV stage...the place only held a few hundred people but its live broadcasts reached untold thousands of local TV watchers. John Tolos was beating up some guy relentlessly and JYD, posing as a regular jabroni in the audience, gets out of his seat and runs into the ring to save this guy, beating up Tolos. Afterward, announcer Gene LaBell interviews Tolos, asking him about some upcoming match, curiously avoiding what had just been shown. Tolos is irate, of course, avoiding any mention of his next scheduled match and going on a diatribe about how "I want this black boy" who had just attacked him in the ring. That, of course, very quickly started JYD's LA wrestling career. Tolos got fairly racist with his comments, which were almost certainly done to attract more blacks to the Olympic Auditorium matches. I've always wondered what discussions the promoters had about using this tactic. Also, there was certainly a risk that the entire audience would have followed JYD into the ring and created major chaos, which was risky but would have likely filled the Olympic to capacity (which it hadn't reached for a long time).
@philipclarke9696
@philipclarke9696 3 года назад
He wrestled for LaBell? I thought he started for Jarrett in Memphis and then worked for Gulas then Calgary as Big Daddy Ritter then onto Mid South. Are you sure you’re not talking about George Wells?
@danoc51
@danoc51 3 года назад
@@philipclarke9696 Yes, I definitely REMEMBER it was JYD but there is a chance I'm wrong. I've just tried to find some trace of it on the internet but don't see anything. Given the controversial nature and the prominence of John Tolos in LA, it was one of the most memorable events of the old NWA LA territory. I always assumed he - whoever it was - was planted in the audience to look like a fan but had wrestled previously. He was not here a long time. Wikipedia shows JYD's career starting in 1976 but I would say this happened just slightly before that.

@@Clubber-Slang it is racist to connect drugs with "the projects" when drugs were EVERYWHERE. Did white wrestlers also go to the "projects" to get their cocaine?
@Clubber-Slang
@Clubber-Slang 3 года назад
@@PMuAce1898 @W. Earl Sparrow Jr. I didn't use the word projects, you did. And again I think people of all colors n creeds love drugs, so I associate this as a guy who happens to be black wanting to get some as opposed to black people like drugs. Also, as someone who grew up in a very poor area, it is far easier to get drugs there, as unlike swankier areas that would think they see "suspicious activity" and calls the cops, people in the "projects" or the poor areas of towns n cities are more likely to turn a blind eye and mind their business. So I'd say it's pretty common knowledge that as I said before, it was easier to get drugs there as opposed to the drugs are only located there. Also remember this was barely the 80s and some research on the socio-economic statistics of the area show there are at the time far more separate parts of town. I didn't event gentrification, but am not going to pretend it didn't or doesn't exist because it might offend someone either.

It was his showmanship. He picked a perfect theme song Another One Bites The Dust. He comes to the ring swinging this giant chain at over 300 pounds. 300 pounds was a big deal 40 years ago most wrestlers weren't that big. His trademark headbutt on all fours got laughs from all the children. Then his awesome powerslam finisher The name of the powerslam he called THUMP written on the back of his tights. Then he invited the kids to dance with him after the match or him helping his jobber opponent to his feet and raising his hand in victory and the jobber falls flat on his face. What made Junkyard Dog so hot was his showmanship.
