@VitZ9
@VitZ9 2 года назад
As an avid mob historian, I can safely say that if they wanted to whack Vince, 1984-86 would have been the perfect time to do it. This was the era of the Teflon Don, John Gotti. The younger mob guys basically considered themselves invincible to law enforcement, and had killed most of the old guard who preferred business to violence. In fact, the 80's was the deadliest decade to be in the mob, with more mob related violence and public assassinations than ever before. They could get their hands on basically anyone they wanted, celebrities, politicians, and especially jurors when it came to keeping themselves out of prison. But most importantly, this was the era of the stupidest mobsters ever, flashy, showing off their wealth, drawing police attention to themselves, talking to the press, etc. Which is also why it was the last decade the mob were at their most powerful. So if there was ever an era of mobsters so coked out of their minds and stupid enough to whack a public figure like Vince McMahon, which would draw national attention, it was the 80's.

@@iBmEVanquisher I praise territories because they did wrestling correctly. Unlike modern Indies who only do 1 to 3 cities, and have a show once a month, working a territory is the way to do the business. When Corny was doing SMW or OVW, he did more than 1 city and had 2 shows a week if not more. If you work a territory you can hire talent full time and work them 3 days a week or more. However like Mid-South in the day they would travel a circuit and go from LA to OK. What took a lot of territories down was greed, they wanted to go national and become millionaires but not all territories could bring in that money. The WWWF and NWA Hollywood was about the only two that could. People do forget that the NWA was a cabal. It was not a promotion but a collection of promotions that worked to ensure that members had the best deals, the best talent, swapping talent like the NFL does, blacklist talent that couldn't perform or had issues, etc. Since the WWF had a great territory to begin with and it was full of rich people (New York) not some place like Mid South which was rural and had more people under poverty level, Vince was able to get more money and then turn around and offer more for TV stations. Only reason Watts lasted where I am is because LA wouldn't give anyone else a licence at the time to run wrestling shows so Watts had a small monopoly in New Orleans, Monroe and the bigger cities. But yea Vince would go state to state and buy out the slots that local promoters had because he could offer more money.
@captaincat4361
@captaincat4361 5 лет назад
@@iBmEVanquisher Yes. I tell people that Vince McMahon didn't beat his competition, they beat themselves, from the NWA being greedy and backstabbing each other, to the WCW shooting itself with idiotic decisions. However, I will always believe wrestling is a regional "sport". Coming from Arkansas and growing up with Mid-South, then WCW, WWE never really did anything for me. I haven't watched a full show for almost 15 years.
@gregorsamsa2271

You nailed it here. The territories were like gangsters, while Vince always was like a corporate thief, or professional gangster. If the promoters of the territory days weren't so corrupted or greedy, they really could have achieved something together (like making unions). Vince wasn't a savior, it's actually the opposite. It's just that he was smarter business wise, way more hungry after power & money, and deceitful!

Iron Sheikh claims that Verne Gagne offered him 20 grand to break Hulk Hogan's leg in the ring. There's also a story that Bruiser Brody was offered considerably more to storm the ring at Wrestlemania 1 and ruin the main event. Of course that was a much stupider idea because tough or not it's not like Brody was going to fight all four of those guys. Personally, I think if any of those guys were really serious about all this we'd be talking about Vince McMahon that promoter who mysteriously vanished back in the 1980s.

IMO, the ones who really feared for their lives were Jack & Jerry Brisco. They sold WCW to Vince on April 9, 1984. Two things happened: At a show in Canton, OH, they were to face The Road Warriors. Animal told them that someone had offered to pay them a huge sum of money if they legitimately hurt them, "But we don't do business that way," he said. Later down the road, wrestler/manager Paul Jones told them that someone had been hired to shoot them. Needless to say, they went around with their heads on a swivel for a while. Then there is also the story where Verne Gagne offered The Iron Sheik a huge sum of money if he broke Hogan's leg the night of the WWE Title change at MSG (1-23-1984).

Yeah. Well the other factor in all this that 1984 was the year Harley Race went into the WWF locker room in Kansas City with a gun and confronted Hulk Hogan talking about how he came there to kneecap him. And 1984 was also the year that Verne Gagne supposedly tried to get the Iron Sheik to break Hogan's leg at the Garden. Putting the top star in the WWF out of action would have been a far more typical wrestling thing to try than hiring a hit man to go after a promoter. Ole was already done as a player by the time of the NWA meeting. Dusty had plotted with Crockett `to basically ruin Florida by stealing just about all of Eddie Graham's wrestlings. Jim Crockett and Fritz Von Erich are not murder for hire kind of guys. The minor people in St. Louis like Geigel didn't count anymore because they were Verne Gagne's junior partneres. Bill Watts was way, way more angry at Jim Crockett at that time than he was Vince McMahon over Crockett kicking him off TBS. Verne Gagne might have thought about it, but he would have been smart enough not try to arrange a hit through a committee of people he didn't trust. But I really doubt the story about anyone seriously thinking about this at the NWA meeting. Even of those guys had the idea in their mind, the NWA meeting is the last place they would have talked about it. Those guys hated Vince McMahon but in 1984 they also hated each other, they stabbed each other in the back whenever they could and just about every one of them had a plan to become a national promotion. None of those guys would have ever trusted each other with something as legally compromising to themselves as talking about a contract killing. But I really do believe that there was serious thought given to how to end Hulk Hogan's career in 1984.

Verne was also dealing with the city trying to take his land from him. Even in 84 the AWA was circling the drain, and Verne was burning through what money he had left. Even if he REALLY wanted to, he probably didn't have the money to hire a hitman
@Jim-Tuner
@Jim-Tuner 5 лет назад
As far as I remember, the eminent domain situation happened later in the 1980s. The AWA was not circling the drain in 1984. It was in fact coming off probably one of its best years ever in 1983. The eminent domain case was the eventual cause of the AWA going out of business in the 1990s. The property in question was heavily mortgaged. Taking the property not only forced Gagne to immediately pay off all the debts, but also eliminated the biggest asset he could use to secure bank loans. The taking of the property eventually forced him into personal bankruptcy around 1993. There are lots of rumors about that land deal. It was a very strange situation and some of the rumors are that the deal was actually arranged as an attempt to financially bail out Gagne (even though he was on paper fighting the deal in court). The property was worth a tremendous amount of money, but it would have a very difficult property to sell at its full value on the open market. The WWF was actually in worse financial trouble than any of the other promotions in 1984. Vince McMahon had bought the promotion with a combination of debt and promises of payments to the previous owners. If a single payment were missed, the deal was that he would lose everything. They were keep afloat month to month. There was eventually a crisis before the first wrestlemania in early 1985. They were literally out of money and the only thing that saved them was selling the TV slots on TBS to Jim Crockett. There is another story that is rarely told. Vince McMahon actually negotiated with Verne Gagne in mid-1983 to buy the AWA. There were several meetings held and the outlines of a deal, but Verne tried to renegotiate some of the terms and Vince McMahon got angry and walked away.

@@Jim-Tuner I didn't mean financially, most of the big talent was in their 40's or 50's and Verne had already developed a bad reputation. If you worked in the AWA Verne would low ball you as much as possible and if you tired going somewhere else he would try to claim your payout. I like Jim Cornette, but he acts like the territories were still a talent trading buddies in the 80's but as you said they hated each other.

Harley didn't confront Hogan with a gun. He and Bob Geigel had an office in the building that WWF was running that night so the just stayed in the building till show time. He went into the locker room to talk to the Funks about why they were working for Vince because they had all been friends for years and were basically working opposition in his town. Hogan saw Harley, got scared like the coward he is and assumed Harley was there for him. He then got smacked in the ribs by Harley. No gun was present or involved and the only one who said there was one was Hogan who is lying as usual and trying to make himself seem more important than he is and to make himself look like something other than the coward he is because he did absolutely nothing when Harley smacked him. The gun story is just one of Hogan's many lies like the rolling Stones wanted him to play bass for them or how he was Elvis's favorite wrestler even though Elvis died two years before Hogan ever wrestled

that wouldnt be surprising. I mean he literally bought WCW and then just destroyed it. He didnt see any incite to keep it going as a separate promotion. Just to have some competition to the WWE brand. You need competition or look what happens...............your product becomes sht.

What about Harley Race? Vince cost Race over half a million in losses over the St. Louis wrestling club by booking against him and taking their tv over. That’s a very good motive for Race to get even with Vince Jr. Eventhough Harley let bygones be bygones by joining the WWF in 86...
