The stupidity of the spot is that when a wrestler is lying down on the canvas and another wrestler has a bat...the wrestler with the bat would not put a chair on top of the wrestler on the canvas and hit the chair. Instead, they would hit the wrestler in the face (or body) with the bat. So even if he had hit the chair safely, the spot isn't believable. Either way it looks like shit.
I had the joy of debating this on Twitter. Almost EVERY person that replied completely overlooked that the spot didn't add anything to the story. Even if it came off without a hitch.
I really wish Corny would make a comeback for one of the big promotions. He's hiding his light under a bushel, can you imagine him back on commentary or as a manager? God, I'd freakin love that. Come back Corny, us old school fans need you. And your tennis raquet.
Even if it was the highest rated show on tv it would be foolish to do something that risky if you don't know the right way.Personally I prefer the more old school stuff. From the 80's on back to Lou Thez.
I can understand the "accidents happen" mentality if it was an agreed upon spot on the part of the talent involved, but this would have looked incredibly stupid (even more so than it did) if it had come off the way they wanted it. The way that chair was set up was as silly (if not more so) than any Chikara spot.
Here's the thing, I have no doubt that it was an accident, he clearly didn't mean to hit him like that. That being said, it was a stupid spot, that plastic chair was not going to protect anything and Sami was still clumsy and reckless preforming it, you don't need to be an expert to see that.
@@heisensaul5538 lol same right on man. A pretty good one is "jim cornette vs the universe" i believe its called. Also the mayonnaise story and the car on fence
Sting swinging a bat always looked believable but was completely safe... I was taught how to swing a lead mallet without hurting someone and did that for a spot a year ago
The agent in charge should have said "Show me what you want to do." Could have done the bat or chair to the ribs. Eddie needs to pick up the phone if Hunter calls to get himself away from Impact.
That looked like an accident but that Callahan guy looked like he was drunk or something. He was off by a lot. He wasn’t positioned right and he almost hurt a referee.
why do people keep saying he was off by a lot? he hit the chair. That's not off by a lot. The problem...besides the obvious, is the angle of the swing.
chad4208 I say off by a lot by the Angle, letting the chair slip and almost hitting the ref with the chair. If he wanted to be at that angle then stand a foot closer so the meat of the bat hits the chair and not the tip which may have fucked Edwards out of a career
I just saw the video of this incident. I will say this: after Sami Callahan delivered that shoulder breaker, you can CLEARLY hear him ask "are you OK?". So while I think this was a HORRIBLE incident that SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.....I don't think he deliberately, intentionally tried to seriously injure him. I'm not trying to say it was acceptable. But I don't think he MEANT to hurt him.
The expression on Callihan’s face is easy to see right after the hit, as they clearly can’t be showing what happened, and he’s clearly shocked. So I wouldn’t say it was on purpose either. But it IS still Callihan’s fault for doing an extremely risky move with no regard to the outcome. Just off the top of my head, slowly lower the bat down onto the chair and hold it there so the chair stabilizes, and as Cornette mentioned, the audience would be able to see the next (telegraphed) hit. Even allowing the announcers to play up the impending hit, “Oh my god, he can’t be serious!” Affording Edwards time to grip the chair tightly and maneuver it so it can’t break his face. I.e. build anticipation. At the speed it was done, if it had been successful it still would’ve seemed like a mistake.
People getting upset about Cornette getting upset at Callihan for this spot are idiots. Cornette cares about Edwards. He cares about taking care of his wrestlers.
Because it's always funny when a person gets hurt really bad. Idiots. If it's so funny let that big boy hit YOU in the face with a bat you damn jackwagon.
sometime I don't think you can "work it" I remember hollering at dad to check this out damnedest thing I seen in a long time. and I showed him Shelton Benjamin flying through the air and taking sweet chin music in the air. dad almost fell down ((hbk mark at the end) he managed to spit out "how? didn't know then don't know now. I see no way to work that.
Judging from this , it appears Eddie has seemingly said he knows this was an accident. On TMZ , Eddie detailed that the chair started to slide and it screwed up the ball bat spot. It seems Eddie and Anthem are using this to sell the program more as Sami stayed in heel mode and cut his TMZ promo.
The29Dave ....Ummmm why shouldn't they fire people especially ones who like Sami Callihan asked for his release as he felt the company wasn't using him properly?
The whole setup falls apart at every angle. The chair doesn’t sit on Eddie’s chest. Sami is trying to hit the chair with the edge of the bat, if his intent was to push the feet of the chair into his ribs and break them that way it could work but he was too far back and not aiming right. But this entire spot is fucking absurd
I think its out of this world that corny would work with necro butcher I seen his upload about him praising necro, but its still so unbelievable that corny, an old school guy, would work with the legend called necro butcher himself I hope necro is doing well, here in 2024. Love you dylan
Typical low information liberal voter. I love his wrestling knowledge and he seems like a relatively cool guy but he knows nothing about politics. I won't speak politics to anyone that can't name the 3 branches of government, what their function is, or why they're important. Or what the ideological difference is between Democrats and Republicans. Jim is one of those people. If he actually knew the ideological differences I guarantee he would realize he's a conservative.
This whole spot was terrible. Edwards was clearly holding the chair because it nearly fell off. Who the hell would do this when laying on their back? Then, you have to wonder what the hell hitting the chair was supposed to do.
It's like when a magician makes something disappear after covering it with the sheet... why don't you just make it disappear without the sheet? Now that would be a trick. The chair is the sheet.
Yeah, he sure put some mustard on that swing too. Could've been career ending. Sami was devastated after, he's grown on me since he left NXT. Love seeing him with Ken Shamrock too.
okay let me get this straight the chair was supposed to hit the chair and the chair would bend and barely tap Eddie Edwards in the face okay instead the bat was nowhere near the chair Sami couldn't at least realize hey this chair isn't anywhere near Eddie's face and instead move over a couple of steps and hit him in the body or not do anything at all act like he was going to hit him in the face and have lashley run in and I wouldn't have fired Sami Callahan I would have however suspended him for at least the next two shows and not air the incident but that's me I'm not impact
If Cornette wants to enyoy wrestling, he should transition to Puroresu completely, not just NJPW but whole Wrestling Industry over there. Over there Wrestling is Always going to be fantastic
Although I have some major disagreements with Cornette on Religion and politics,I do agree with him on this.On a side note can he actually put together 2 sentences anymore without cursing? If he did I would listen to him more often.
I saw his match with MVP at HOH and he wasn't very good, MVP was clearly leading the match but NXT still signed him despite the fact he clearly wasn't ready and we all know how that worked out. He then beat Eddie Kingston for the AAW championship which devalued the belt to the point that it will probably never recover, bottom line Callihan is worthless which is why the promotion formerly known as TNA has hired him
Watched the clip before watching this and it was a nasty looking shot, there’s no doubt about it. I don’t know whether it was intentional or not but the bat legit hit his face with full force. So maybe Callahan forgot to pull back or intentionally hit edwards’s face that hard
I saw this on Impact. It was as stupid a move that could of been done. Did they think that skinny chair was going to protect him? It was like swinging a bat at cookie pan. That chair was that thin. Could of permanently injured Eddie Edwards. This was an accident you could see a mile away. Actually I don't actually call it an accident. I remember Stone Cold vs Undertaker in a buried alive match and Stone Cold was to drive a backhoe to bury Undertaker all by himself. Stone Cold refused to do it by himself because he knew too little about backhoes and one wrong move could of crushed Undertaker. That was smart. He knew he had no business doing something he knew nothing about. If only others would learn. By the way the match was a buried alive match at Rock Bottom December 13, 1998.
Go watch the video tell his broken orbital bone and broken nose its not fo reelz what ever that is just because its predetermined don't mean people don't get hurt stupid people have died in the ring from these fake moves
I'm actually sick of Cornette. Sami is a 16 year pro (13 years at the time of this incident) and no, he is not a death match guy and actually worked for WWE for a time. He can WORK really well actually. And if you watch the footage closely, you can tell this was a total accident and the bat slipped off the chair and into Eddie's face. Also, it's not like Sami booked this segment. I'm pretty sure both guys were working what they were TOLD to do. Cornette is way too critical of certain guys and makes me think he shouldn't even be watching anymore if he hates today's scene as much as he says he does.
So one guy being painfully sloppy, doing an already dumb looking spot, then fucking it up and hitting another guy in the head...that's a work? That's what's being criticized, not his sad attempt to be a "real" heel.
78bcat yea after a fucking month and you want to pretend like Sami hasn't apologized to Eddie and they've already cleared up with each other and let's see Jim is a good friend of Eddie's right? Wouldn't be surprised if Jim called him up after hearing of said accident before it aired and they probably talked him into doing some shit to keep Impact buzzing after the thing aired, the way they are acting now like they all hate each other etc.. it's a fucking work dumbass
Even if it was a "work", it's a incredibly stupid one and they could have told the same story with a spot that was alot more simper but could have looked nasty as well.
Pro wrestlers are ‘stuntmen’. They perform stunts. Bret Hart’s career was ended by an ‘accidental’ badly placed head kick from Goldberg. Droz’s career was ended from a botched move performed by D’Lo Brown. Joey Mercury’s nose was shattered by a ladder that Jeff Hardy landed on. Perro Aguayo and Owen Hart “died” in the ring. Accidents happen in pro wrestling precisely because of the ‘stunt’ nature of the business. Going forward, I think that ‘soft bats’ should be used, but pro wrestling is dangerous regardless of the stunts performed.
Scorch1028 Perro Aguayo died during a match Owen died prior to a match. Regardless though this spot was stupid on top of unnecessary and not remotely similar to those things....except probably the Joey Mercury spot.
Scorch1028 Yes you did which was I pointed out that the circumstances of their death were completely different Owen's death had nothing to do with actual wrestling whereas Perro Aguayo's did.
Ahmed Demha My point is that wrestlers take risks with their bodies in every match. Whether it’s descending from the rafters, taking a particular bump, or doing a stunt involving a baseball bat. Everything they do in the ring is a stunt.
I know I'm a little late to the party with this response but your comment intrigued me a little, if Sami callihan ever goes to NXT, he needs to spend his ENTIRE WWE run there, if he goes up to the main roster, his legitimacy and career are toast
@@lutheranmartintheking4297 I believe Calihan was very briefly on NXT, wrestling under a different name a few years back. I've only seen the Takeovers and they did a Y2J-esque computer bug angle in one of the early Takeovers, and he debuted with some hacker gimmick on the next taping. The next Takeover after that started with Callihan squashing CJ Parker, so it looked like they were trying to push him pretty hard as a face because Parker was heel, but that was the last I saw of him in the Takeovers.
