Cornette makes a great point about what Japanese wrestling used to be. Tiger Mask, Ultimo Dragon, Liger. There is an issue I've noticed in the wrestling community that they forget that modern Japanese wrestling style is not the style Japanese wrestling always was. So, when someone takes issue with it, it doesn't automatically mean that they hate Japanese guys. For some of us, we've seen Japanese wrestling where the psychology was far superior back in the 80s and 90s.

I'm a big NJPW fan and even I admit that there presence on the shows were lack luster. As Cornette said, no one made any impacting impressions. It's sad, because it was a bad representation of what they are capable of. The only one that delivered from the New Japan side was Shingo Takagi. But even his appearance was so minuscule he might as well not even have been there. He basically was just tacked onto the show. But he did great in the ring.

It's weird because in Japan you usually see these guys in suits or at least their gym clothes during events. They should've asked them to come in suits and do at least one match where each of them absolutely obliterates a midcard heel. Imagine if the audience saw the rainmaker entrance and Okada comes in and just destroys some shitter like Daniel Garcia. Tony Khan fucking sucks.

I think the some of the issue is the overall styles. New Japan still on some level presents their matches as a legitimate fight. North America is much more about the entertainment and "star power", and that can be a tough gap to bridge.

In many ways, AEW is a much better product than it was, 2 years ago. The production has improved, and the show feels more major league. But the unnerving lack of self-awareness is alarming at this point. AEW has based its entire identity on having a superior in-ring product. Other than a few exceptions, their in-ring product has become increasingly disengaged.

This match wasn't a complete embarrassment, even if Tanahashi had to carry Moxley, Jericho, and Archer. It was the brawl after the match, while Moxley and Tanahashi just stood there. The thrown in the fact Jericho had to do this two more times, after the Main Event of Rampage and the ending of Forbidden Door. I can only pray that Kingston and his group finally beat Jericho and his jobbers at Cardboard and Crashpad 2, or they are officially buried. The worst part of all of this, is you knew Tanahashi was not going to beat Moxley at the PPV

Ive only started watching this AEW show the past year or so as it's on ITV4 for free in the UK before this I hadn't watched any form of wrestling in years. My question is this, why does every single match on this promotion have to have a spot were whoever's wrestling no matter who it is they have to trade terrible looking forearms back and forth? What is the deal with this? Why does everyone do it? When did this become a thing? It looks so stupid.

The answer to your question is well one of two things: 1.NJPW is massively different than American wrestling so telling them they have to put on a completely different match throws them off also they have to deal with the language issue so the can't cut a promo for the english speaking audience though AEW could have easily done what NJPW does with its american wrestlers and have a translator so they could cut a a promo in Japanese at least and 2. Some of these Japan guys don't want to be on AEW and would rather just stick to wrestling in NJPW so they they do the bare minimum to fulfill their bosses request (Okada we know for a fact did not want to be there nor did he want to be apart of the PPV has he came straight out and said it in an interview about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Tanahashi felt the same way)
@Bunbunfunfun
@Bunbunfunfun 2 года назад
If I was owner of NJPW I would be laying down the law work your ass off , don’t care if you don’t want to be there. That’s so lame. All these guys did was make NJPW wrestlers look extremely weak and the company look second rate. I thought Japanese wrestlers were big into showing how great they are and their company is. Would be firing or burying Okada and anyone else who “ phoned it in”. It’s disrespectful to their North American fanbase as well. So not impressed.

It might be the roster picks, it might be that a lot of the New Japan guys are just there to get paid, or it might be that AEW is following the booking idea that these guys aren't going to get put over, proving that AEW is the world's best promotion. It could be a mix of any of those IMO.
@IanSane

For that ending with the staredown, they must have ended the match early by mistake, right? No way you book two guys staring at each other like doofuses for five minutes straight on purpose. I was watching with my brother and it just became this great running gag and we became more and more amused. Every time they'd cut back to the ring one of us would shout "they're still staring at each other!" and the laughs would get louder and louder. I will hand it to Moxley and Tanahashi sticking to the bit even after they must have known it was going too long. "Okay, don't laugh. Keep staring. God, has it been 10 minutes? It feels like 10 minutes. Were we supposed to move to something else? Is someone going to cue us when to stop? Eh, don't want to mess up, just keep with the staredown until they tell us otherwise."
