You know, for all the time I have seen people say "this is like Rocky 3" there is only like... one case off the top of my head where it actually did come off like that. I want to say it was Brock Lesnar vs John Cena, where Cena got destroyed by like five F-5s and 30 German Suplexes in a level of domination he had never faced before. Unfortunately it seemed like someone panicked or something because instead of having the angle where say, John Cena is out of action. Maybe have him cut a few promos and vignettes over like 5 months about how he had been so destroyed he goes to Stu Hart's Dungeon or something to learn a new style of wrestling, learn how to counter getting suplexed over and over, etc.They had him the next week just show back up and absolutely destroy someone I can't quire remember but wasn't a job guy, was someone that he went the distance with before in a close match. Nothing really changed about his style, etc. So the severe beating that should have been an excuse for a long build up and this training montage and perhaps learning new skills was... instead something that made him come back more John Cena superman than ever before with no noticeable difference beyond just slightly less selling from him. The other potential (and wasn't actually used like that) was when Owen Hart gave Steve Austin that bad piledriver. It could have gone that way perhaps to take advantage of the real injury. But it wasn't really Austin's character and they didn't go for it. I think most people just say "Rocky 3" for the idea of "A guy gets beat in a squash match then comes back to win in a squash match" and forgets the actual meat of that movie. Having to hit rock bottom and rebuild yourself as a new person. Rocky didn't just step back into the ring fighting Clubber Lang like he had everyone else. He had to learn how to fight right handed, how to speed train, start working quick jabs over hard hitting hooks and such. Leaned down in weight to get faster. Etc. They always miss THAT part of it. And don't even seem to think of that. Though with the Steve Austin angle his style did change in the ring afterwards, but more a factor of the injury itself than actual intended story.
