Composed in 1973 by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox and written by Jim Croce. The letter presents a narrator who is proud of who he is and where he is going in life, he begins by saying that just as the plants and animals he has a name that can be proud of. Keeps saying that the wind, the birds and even the babies cry, and he has a song he will sing no matter what happens, and proudly go to the end.

I started taking long motorcycle trips in the early 1970's & this song always ran through my mind. My body is weathered & worn and I can't ride anymore, but this song will always be with me.

I turn 83 years old this year (2024) - grandchildren bring Time in a Bottle to mind. Croce's music - as Reba would say - touched my heart. Then and always.

I bought this awesomely inspiring song on LP, cassette, CD, sheet music, and as an iTunes purchase for my iPod and iPhone hiking playlists. It's one of the best recordings on the planet. Just imagine what stellar music Jim would've blessed us with if he hadn't left so soon. So many gone too soon...Jim Croce, John Denver, Dan Fogelberg, Karen Carpenter...all with such unique, wonderful voices and songs.

Jim was such talented singer and songwriter. I was just a kid (2 years old) when he died but I have grown to appreciate and love his music. This is truly is music.

That movie introduced me to this song, when I was a kid. Ever since, I first rented the movie from Blockbuster, and my parents subsequently bought the movie on dvd (which I still have to this very day), I have enjoyed listening to Jim Croce. He has been and always will be one of my favorites.

I believe it was "like the whippoorwill and the phoebe's cry...", a phoebe being a small bird similar to a sparrow... At least that's how it was reported in an article I read when the song first came out..
