Thom Moore wrote it for his band Midnight Well, which had a female singer (Janie Cribbs), and the original was "I've got a man, and I've got a gun", which makes a lot more sense given that the order they are mentioned in leaves it open to question which is for fighting and which is for fun, and who has a girl for fighting?

christopher macgregor With due respect, I gotta disagree. Devine's version captures the folksy feel of the tune better. Carter is certainly one of the greats, but he stretches things too much on this song.
