I love Jacob but I think he really missed the point with Jareth’s age! He was the antagonist and intentionally much older than her to represent Sarah’s looming adulthood and responsibility, which was simultaneously enticing and yet intimidating. He tries to force her to not be true to herself when she learns it’s okay to enjoy childhood things and yet also be responsible. It’s very intentionally about the struggle of adolescence between adulthood and childhood! They also wanted Jareth to represent her ~teen girl fantasy~ and so he’s made to seem too sexy and old for her, which is common for a teen girl to fantasize about.

Exactly this. I mean if you were a teen girl in the 80s, it’s not a huge stretch to say David Bowie was a potential face to show up when you were fantasizing about hot dudes to come sweep you off your feet. In that sense it’s a pretty accurate casting.

Honestly I think this is about a young woman's fascination with adulthood and her desire to grow up too fast, hence her feelings for Jareth. At the end of the movie she realizes that she's been idolizing the idea of adulthood and she shouldn't let Jareth take her. honestly not a bad message imo.

I LOVE this movie. Watch it at least once a year. For me it's a really great coming-of-age story. Sarah essentially grows up over the course of the movie, and recognizes that although she's older now and needs to step into her new responsibilities and stop living in a fantasy world ALL the time, that world and all the things she loves will always be there waiting for her "should she need it". As a fantasy-obsessed late-bloomer, that was a very comforting message for me.

The romantic/sexual desire for an adult man, just like all the characters & scenes of the Labyrinth (which we see as stuffed animals & pictures near the beginning of the movie in her room), originates from Sarah & her fantasies, so as a kid it made sense to me & my fellow young girls, and maybe is why this movie has such staying power. It was/is taboo because it revealed something that we girls instinctively knew we had to keep secret (our sexual hunger & curiosity), but it did so in a way that wasn't gross, that didn't objectify the lead female character. It's not about Jareth's desire for Sarah; it's about hers for him. Appropriately, it stays closer to childish ignorance of what mature romance typically entails and just includes hints of the carnality Sarah (& the young viewer) is not ready to experience (all the other people in the ballroom scene are adults; she's confused, scared, & fascinated). Thanks for coming to my media studies thesis defense. Lol
@abbylarkspur
@abbylarkspur 2 года назад
I came here to see someone say this. Her reuniting with her friends from the other world at the end shows that she can still be childish even as an adult. Her rejection of Jared shows that she's self-composed enough not to believe what he tells her. Also when David Bowie said "I will be your slave" I was like if that weren't a lie that would be awesome. Then I saw the fetish unlocked indicator appear.
@theodour8617
@theodour8617 2 года назад
Yes, he says he will be her slave. Everything in the labyrinth is like if a child came up with a mazerunner idea, as Jacob says, because she is a child and it's her fantasies. She walks around in that dress at the start of the movie, trying hard to live in a fantasy world. "Be careful what you wish for.", some might droolscream at the screen. Also Jareth isn't a nice character, the audience aren't supposed to like him. Jacob seems to view this movie as a piece of nineteenth century Russian realism. EDIT: His point of view is quite funny. This is a funny video and he's a funny guy. I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist över this.

It has nothing to do with a child marrying a grown man. It's about a young girls longing to be and be with her mother who ran away with another man, who happened to be David Bowie. My favorite movie of all time! Another weird thing, in the beginning when Sarah is sitting in her room in front of her mirror, there’s pictures of her mom and Jeremy (David Bowie) taped to the mirror. Jeremy (David Bowie) is the actor that Sarah’s mom had an affair with, and who she left her husband for…so Sarah basically has a crush on her moms boyfriend/costar because she pictures the goblin king as him. The book goes into more detail about this!

I love this movie! I wrote a paper on it back in college discussing the labyrinth as Sarah's subconscious and all the characters as elements of her psyche. Bowie's character is the _bad guy_ - he stole her brother and is trying to steal her and we are meant to find him creepy hope she escapes!! It's based around the old fairy abduction stories where people assumed the fairies would swap your loved ones for a changeling and keep your loved one in their kingdom forever unless you could help them escape. I never knew until watching this video that people assume he's some kind of genuine love interest lol. Did they assume Ursula was actually trying to help Ariel in Little Mermaid??

She makes the right decision in the end and steals her brother and escapes from the abuser!! So how anyone interpreted it as an actual legit romance is beyond me. People in the comments are talking about how problematic it is but it's _meant_ to be considered wrong by the audience. My favorite movie! I was in middle school when I saw this movie for the first time at my aunts house. And since then, it’s been my number one obsession! I had “Babe with the power” on my college grad cap. I even drove 16 hrs to go to the Puppet museum to see the puppets in person! A dream come true!

It's funny being an elder millennial and having this movie just be a normal part of my childhood and then seeing a slightly younger perspective. It makes me understand just how batshit all this is and how it was completely cool to me. That someone could not know about Labyrinth never even occurred to me then hearing them describe it really puts it in perspective. I do credit this movie with awakening early bisexual tendencies in me as I had (and still have) a simultaneous crush on Bowie and Connelly. Oh and to piggy back on your fun fact about the movie: the baby Toby in the movie is played by Toby Froud who is the son of Brian Froud and Brian did the concept art for the movie among a lot of other credits. And now Toby Froud is an artist who has also worked on Henson projects like the Dark Crystal series they did for Netflix.

i dont think jareth marrying the girl is supposed to be seen as a good thing, i thought he was supposed to seem like a creep but still be charming. he literally kidnapped her baby brother and made her go through a goblin maze to get him back, i dont think we're supposed to think hes a good guy lol
@Vexarax

Yes he is literally the bad guy of the film lol. It's like if people were saying "well it's pretty problematic that Ursula tricked Ariel into signing the contract and that she keeps literal mermaid souls as garden pets" - that's the _point_ - she's the bad guy!! We aren't meant to hope she gets to keep Ariel as a flower lol. I don't know how so many people seem to have assumed Bowie's character is a genuine love interest and that we are just meant to ignore how problematic that is.. We were _always_ meant to know it's wrong and to hope she escapes from him. She even knows that!!

The book she's holding in the movie was meant to be a script. Her mother starred in a stage play of the Labyrinth before she passed. If I remember correctly, the playbill for the play is somewhere in her room. The story she tells her brother is the synopsis of the play, she didn't make it up.

When I was young, I assumed that in a generation or two the young folks would not get my cultural references. That was the way of the world. But then: Internet! It’s so cool to share, enjoy, laugh at, and also critique these things with both older and younger people. The Internet weirdly transcends time, and it brings people together in a beautiful way, when it’s not being a trash fire.

This was one of my all time favourite movies as a child and no joke, because of this movie, I literally thought that some clocks actually had thirteen hours on them in real life until I was like 14 years old. I know that makes absolutely no sense, I guess I literally just didn’t think at all about how the logic of a thirteen hour clock would work lmfao. It's so bizarre because I also have a memory of asking my mum if there were really clocks with thirteen hours and her saying that some clocks were just like that. I suppose that memory was a fabrication and it was actually just my little autistic brain making weird real life assumptions based on something I saw in a movie. Anyways great video!

I scream every time I remember this was written by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. He even wrote a book with Brian Froud about the Goblins. Seeing him in the making of video gets me every time. The book that inspired the story was called “Outside over there” by Maurice Sendak, and scarier than anything in this movie.

I never really saw his obsession with Sarah as romantic really. I think he’s lonely as the only human in the goblin world. Think about it, the ballroom scene has people, the trash is all human sized. I think he somehow lost his human citizens and built the maze to protect his city and castle but now he found another person but only knows how to control others. He kept his promise the whole way through but in the end Sarah wouldn’t let him control her like he does the goblins, and was then sent back.

The scene where the girl got mad about her missing teddy bear has always reminded me of a memory I have from when I was 3. I was in a naturally-lit room with white walls and no furniture except for a dresser with a teddy bear on it. I tried to leave the room, but the door knob fell off, trapping me. I think I remember my Mom's boyfriend at the time, who I called Barnie, getting mad at me for needing help out.
