What a legend. I don't know of a better snare drummer in the world than Jim
@bille1131
@bille1131 16 лет назад
I have been playing drums for 54 years now and for the ingorant ones this man is the one we all aspire to. For those who don't know he does play a drum kit. For those that think it's easy, have a go. He has won the World Champion solo drumming prize 16 times an all time world record which will not be broken in the next 25 years or so. Oh well that's got that of my chest.
@JamezDrumz

Guy is a straight up BEAST! Any one who wants to criticize him and his talents just shut your mouth and respect him until you can post a video that's any better of yourself. And anyone who says this solo isn't musical,IT'S A SOLO,this man can do whatever he wants,and that's that.

Even to this day, 17 years later, there is no one that has even came close to Jim. Mcwhirter, mcquillan etc are nowhere near the player Jim was. True legend.
@BluudyGreg

Yeah, true there are a lot of people out there with chops, but this guy has been one of the innovators for the past 40 years ... and, if you ever get a chance to see Jim on a kit, he is just as good, obviously not what he's popular for, but the guy is a master at both ...
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 16 лет назад
Absolutely no doubt. Jim is probably my biggest influence as far as stick control goes. He blends together finger control, a sort of a moeller motion in order to make the stick rebounce in a way full of feeling and control and other minor muscular moves. I'm starting to understand some of Jim's techniques and feeling while playing.

@IvoMaropo

A marching snare drum is composed by Nylon, it gives rediculous amounts of rebound for silly double strokes and buzz/press rolls. It also facilitates single strokes A LOT.
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 17 лет назад
The sound of that pipe snare drum and those "moellered" multiple strokes don't convince me as they once did anymore.
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 16 лет назад
I'd dare to say that out of ALL the snare/pipe/DCI/DCA/kit drummers alive today, Jim is the one to feature the most amazing stick control. His paradiddles are lightning-fast. Actually, I think I've never seen someone playing 'em that fast and clear in my whole life. AMAZING finger technique and moeller. Does anyone know how do they do it? Such an amazing finger control... his fingers and hands barely move! Alex Duthart was also another man with TERRIFIC hand technique. Really amazing.

One thing worth a mention is the fact that this video is not shown properly (as far as the frame rate is concerned). When you see Kilpatrick playing in a normal frame rate speed video, it looks A LOT less impressive (it can be checked in other videos). Just an important note.

I know that Kilpatrick and Buddy Rich knew of each other and that there was a lot of mutual respect between the two of them. Both are legends of percussion. Putting down one to prop up the other is nuts, while comments like "This guy makes Buddy Rich and Neil Peart look like a Fool. End of Story" expose that poster as naive and ridiculous.

What I said makes perfect sense. Maybe you can't take any kind of criticism, but what I said does make sense and serves as a nice response to the Buddy Rich basher. Buddy was not perfect (nor is Kilpatrick). They're 2 legends, but no human being is totally flawless. Of course. My arguments on the rebounding nature of the Pipe snare drum also make perfect sense and remains truthful.

Yeah, richcapo. I wouldn't go as far as saying "a LOT faster", but he was a bit faster (and a LOT LOUDER and controlled, for sure). However, Kilpatrick's domain as far as flam taps, buzz rolls, moeller, mommy and daddy and many, backstikings many other things is undeniable. He has an absolute technique (concerning the understanding of more speed/less effort). There's no doubt in my mind that he is the best pipe snare drum player in the world. He's got ridiculous skills in that field.

@dj3ntz i am saying they are different styles and it is impossible to compare in their various types of drumming they are briliant which is undeniable! They are different styles thus kilpatrick may be a superior drummer in ability but barker is still a brilliant kit drummer and arguably the best kit drummer on the planet.
@ilikeurface985
@ilikeurface985 15 лет назад
u should go on that show time warp!!!
@adamgarvin
@adamgarvin 13 лет назад
@dj3ntz He is the best because he doesnt play like many other drummers to show off he plays in a way to compliment the music. And albeit it can be simple compared to other drummers what he does compliments the music brilliantly. Its the exact same principle that comes to side drumming. Jim Kilpatrick is amazing here yes. BUT the thing that makes him arguably the best side drummer ever isn't that. But his ability to compliment the music to an incredible standard.
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 17 лет назад
when you understand what a PIPE snare drum can do and vibrate like a construction machine and when you get to know Buddy's playing like I do (after more than 100 different video analysis), Jim stops being so damn impressive like that. That's just my experience. You're free to apreciate whatever the hell you want. I like Jim A LOT, but I don't think hes the best thing since sliced bread anymore.
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 16 лет назад
probably the world's finest drum technician alive - the other ones could be Buddy Rich and Alex Duthart (for MANY reasons. Both had IMMENSE stick control, even using different techniques) :] One thing I would say is that you NEED to start experimenting with the stick's bounce. You should be able to "feel" it - I cannot really explain, but the better you feel connected with the sticks hitting the snare and "coming back", the better your playing turns.
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 15 лет назад
buddy rich was another one that could "roll paradidles". Look for his 1970 video and watch his rudiments FLY THROUGH THE ROUGH. Besides his backsticking, Buddy could keep up with him. Both have a blessed pair of hands.

Nope. That's why I said "leave it to the BIGGER fishes out there". I understand the fascination that the discovery of Jim's pipe snare drumming is. I understand. What you're seeing here is basically multiple strokes of many kinds being executed in a pipe snare drum produced to generate the biggest rebound ever possible. What Buddy did was single stroke manipulations at any power and speed & combinations. As I said before, you're not qualified to criticize Mr. Buddy Rich like that if you don't understand how gifted Buddy's hands really was. Leave it for the "bigger fishes" out there.

I've been on tour with Jim Kilpatrick before. He is a phenominal player. Cru4you, before you judge him and his playing ability, go see him perform live. I've watched your individuals solo that you have on your page, and you're a good snare drummer. But before you flippantly write Kilpatrick off as "really not THAT good", you need to see him live. It will probably humble you just a bit.

Go to drummerworld(dot)com and search for the following Buddy Rich video titles: 1. "the great solo with stick trick" 2. "buddy rich 1970" 3. "frank sinatra" 4. "harry james" 5. "buddy rich 1978" 6. "channel one suite" To not like any of these solos is not a matter of taste, it's a matter of insanity.

Don't agree about that Buddy didn't posses as good of a swing playing as Morello and Bellson. They were pretty much very "swinguy", only Krupa had a so incredible way of swinging that it was really unprecedented. Buddy didn't read 'til late in his life because he simply didn't need to read, he would very easily memorize all the charts, his thing was to improvise, to create, not to obey to certain notation restrictions.

Let me leave it cleaer: I still think that Jim is the best pipe snare drummer alive, I just don't think hes in the same genius-level of drum creativity as Buddy Rich. No one is (imo, and in the opinion of MANY really respected drummers out there who know Buddy's work deeply. They can give you good advice).
@IvoMaropo
@IvoMaropo 17 лет назад
You shouldn't look at all Buddy Rich "solo", but soloS, I really enjoy Kilpatrick but he also repeats himself a lot, with the same backstickings over and over again. He also did some things here quite wrongly. His single stroke roll was NOT consistent at all. I could notice some errors as far as RL RL RL goes, his momy and daddy is not being shown properly. Many small mistakes here and there (just take a close look and hear it well).

@sw1ngkat , define what you mean by "side"? do you mean snare? I know many better rudiment bassed snare drummers. Casey Brohard, Nate McLaren, Dave Oriente, Austin Jabaut, Mike Peacheyto name a very few. (Had a bigger list but it exceeded the 500 characters allowed) I have marched 5 going on 6 years of Drum Corps in America and have won 3 Drum Corps Associates Individual and Ensemble World Championships. I'm NOT saying I'm the shit or anything, I'm just saying that he really isn't THATgood.

Get your facts straight and stop making misleading statements. Do you really wanna teach me who Mr. Duthart was? For god's sake. Buddy once stated in a Tonight's show program that Alex was the best SNARE player hes ever seen, but he stated once again who the kit master really was. You are not qualified to make such statements. Maybe Jim could say something more "legimate" on the subject. Not you.
