I was Jim's bandleader and guitarist from July 1976 - August 1978. I've worked with several artists over the years but the 2 years with Jim were the most fun I ever had on the road, one big party, and the most organized act I ever worked with. We did the Vegas thing with Bobbie. They were writing songs together and we recorded the demos in a studio I built in Jim's house. Jim's producer at the time came over and said he booked time at Sunset Recorders, I think, to record the masters the following Wednesday or Thursday. We were all fired the Monday before the sessions. There's a lot more to that story. As far as I know the songs were never recorded, which is too bad because they were really good tunes. Anyway Jim was a phenomenal talent, a great guy to work for, and Bobbie was a great singer, writer, and very creative. Her voice and Mississippi accent were music in their own right.

Hi Alan, I love this story and woud love to see those unknown songs released. But why were you all cancelled before that recording date? Gentry is a brilliant writer and I'm sure she has a chest of songs she has been writing for years. Surely she could be writing for other artists as well. Hope she comes back too ... she was so cool in her day, I was a young teenager then ... And how is your career? Reply

That’s an amazing story.. Jim is an amazing talent, I saw him several times in his theatre in Branson, and he was unbelievably talented, as a guitar player, singer, and comedian… I thought it was cool that he was from here in Arkansas as well.. I’m sure you have an awful lot of stories, with your background… it would be nice to hear them, have a great day…
@AlanKolby

I'm pretty sure the final versions of those songs were never recorded, which is too bad because they were really good, kind of funky because of Bobbie's background, and our band all came out of the Soul music thing. We weren't exactly cancelled, we were all fired. Not overly sure what happened, it was all so quick. We were scheduled to do the master recordings and a little over a week later I was on my way out of L.A.. I was told that Bobbie kind of took over Jim's life. It wasn't just the band - his manager was fired, his road manager was fired, his producer got fired and he sold his house in Hollywood. I went back to Nashville and spent the next 10 years working in a corporate event band and doing sessions. Moved to Florida where I'm from and did the same thing there. In 2002 I moved to Texas, another place I had once lived and ended up doing the corporate event band and recording session thing here. Right now working as kind of a hired gun. I'm playing in one band with George Strait's drummer, another band with Strait's drummer and piano player, and a couple of other bands and doing sessions. So all in all I've been pretty lucky with my career. I've been able to pay my bills and it's kept me from having to get a job all these years. Thanks for asking. Alan@@JIM-ot4ws
@AlanKolby

I also worked with Tanya Tucker, and was Barbie Benton's band leader while she was living with Hugh Hefner, so between that and all the other crazy things I've done, I do have a couple of stories. Jim is a great talent but he is actually from Lake Eloise Florida near Winter Haven. You might be thinking of Glen Campbell who I believe is from Arkansas.

Bobbie Gentry was an incredible talent and beautiful woman. I met her back in 1989 in Savannah, Georgia. I was a manager of a furniture store, when she walked in. I recognized her immediately, I got so flustered. LOL She was very polite and friendly and said she was looking for furniture for her home. She had just moved to Savannah with her son. I know she lived in Savannah for awhile,but not very long. I did get an autographed on one of our furniture advertisements. LOL I will always remember that day forever. She is an incredible woman. 👍👍

Bobbie Gentry retired on her own terms. In the early 80's she was a first time mother to a young son and chose to put the needs of her child first. She was worth tens of millions from a 15 year career that at one point saw her briefly as the highest paid entertainer on the Vegas strip. She headlined The Howard Hughes Organization string of casinos for a decade and was one of the few who had access to the reclusive billionaire. In 1976 she signed a multi million dollar contract to work 16 weeks a year for the Hughes Organization. In recent years her recordings have sold extremely well. The 2018 box set, The Girl from Chickasaw County:The Complete Capitol Masters, shocked the recording industry when it sold out its first pressing in 48 hours. U.M.G records had to quickly press more editions to keep up with public demand. At nearly 100 dollars a pop, it sold over 20,000 sets and was nominated for a grammy for Best Historical Recording in 2019. Bobbie Gentry has chosen to keep her lucrative publishing song rights and recordings all under the stewardship of Universal Records and Publishing :The largest record company in the world.

Both of these artists were favorites of mine years ago. I didn’t know they were married. I’d say their son was a full adult before it came to my attention. I always thought both of them saw fame and fortune. And, took the steps necessary to not have to achieve it again. Despite her education and self reliance. I figured Ms. Gentry to be appalled at things she’d seen or heard. I don’t know why. I just like the way she carried herself. As a teenager, I had a since of respect for this gorgeous woman. It was actually something different at that time in my life. And, I liked her for it. And, Mr. Stanford was one of only two people. I ever heard play two songs on the guitar at the same time. And, seemingly unaware of how good he was . Yet, in complete control of every performance. I loved his T.V. show. I’ve never been to Branson. But, would tell anyone. He’s worth seeing. I’ll be here picking my Gibson. Sit’n on that sack o’seeds!

I always thought that she was so beautiful and elegant. I also thought Jim Stafford was a perfect match for her, funny and talented. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors and why this didn't work? But I was shocked to hear when they filed for divorce almost 2 years later. Of her three marriages she had, it was the one that lasted the longest 23 months. She must have loved him a lot because of the three marriages, Tyler Gentry-Stafford was her only child. The marriage to Jim Stafford was her last one, and it ended in September 1980. Jim Stafford, on the other hand, has only been married twice. His second marriage to Ann Britt Stafford lasted 24 years until 2013. They have two adopted children. Georgia Garland (GG) Stafford and Sheaffer (Shea) Stafford who passed away on November 26, 2020, at age 27. In summary, these two entertainers are just unbelievably talented with amazing skills. I didn't know that she was a model, and it helped her put her way through school. He, on the other hand, he has an amazing sense of humor and has a reputation for being a very nice and charming man. I wish them both continued happiness, health, and prosperity. To answer your question, my favorite song from both of them, as I'm sure it is with hundreds of thousands of other people from Bobby Gentry is Ode to Billie Joe 🤾‍♂️🌉 and as Jim Stafford, his song, Spiders and Snakes.🕷🐍 Still listen to it, to this day. 👍🙂

@FactsVerse Truthfully, that will always be hard to answer since I like so many; &, in this case, she was so talented, they Can NOT be ranked. However, the rest of her great works are contained within period albums; as only a few were released as singles to do a chart competition rise. For the most psrt, she authored musical compositions; conceptual albums; longer narrative pieces; or, ballads, story songs, duets, interpretives, etc., which were not meant for rapidly listened to, on high noise radio play, they were meant to be slowly absorbed at home, in quiet;...ACTUALLY listened to; >>NOT IGNORED & DISMISSED IN THE BACKGROUND! For example, no matter what anyine wrotes in the comments on your channel, you NEVER respond; you just ahift into your one standard reply: why do you wanna see on my channel; or, what do you like about something; etc. But, you never hold a real talk with ANYONE. It is like talking to artificial intelligence; all impersonal; &, robotic. Nothing teal about it. So do NOT exoect real replies. The same totally 100% superficial, totally meaningless, detached remoteness you deal out to us, you will get back! Don't like it, tough! You NEVER invest in anyone; nor, anything deeper than cardboard false pretenses. So WHY should anyone here, invest in you-??? My answer: THEY SHOULDN'T; since you've already proven countless times, for years, you, TRAGICALLY: >>REFUSE 100%, to tackle anything w/: SINCERE, REAL: thought; &, 100% HONEST, real feelings, behind it!!

Because a person doesn’t live a “high profile life” does not indicate they live “somewhat reclusive lives” either.🙏 High profile lives are a reflection of a preying industry that generates money at other people’s expense but gossip is like that. It was nice to hear this summary aside from the “somewhat reclusive” comment. 👍🙂

I'll make two points. First referring to BG as a "Country" artist is ridiculous. She was a Pop artist with far more Jazz and R&B in her music than Country. Telling stories of the rural South doesn't make music Country. Second she isn't a recluse. She just doesn't see any need to bask in the spotlight.
