The guy is funny, but I was disappointed. I kept waiting for him to stop the comedy bit and break into a serious rendition of Classical Gas. Many years ago, I bought a 45-single of Classical Gas, so I know how the song is supposed to go.
For those 655 thumbs down, I'm guessing you are deaf, dumb and blind. Great talent that is clean, funny and what an amazing guitar player, singer and comedian. Love Jim Stafford....
Roy Clark has nothing on Jim Stafford....neither in the clown department nor in guitar mastery. Stafford clearly knows his stuff. Jerry Reed is another one that you can throw into this mix...funny guy, but a seriously good player, not to mention Roger Miller... : )
Not sure that he did. I remember this episode. Relatively sure SB got canceled shortly afterwards regardless of the fact they were hugely popular. They always pushed the envelope. JS is a beautiful talent, though. Glad we got to enjoy him.
Applause to this genius who is so good he can inject comedy and make it work with the music. I play the guitar also. And It is also comedy. Not intentionally.
Keith Purdue I've never heard you play,so I can't comment on that. But,if you continue working real hard at it, you just might have a shot at comedy! I'm not joking! By the way, was it any of your ancestors that started Purdue University in Lafayette, IN? Just wondering! LOL
Can anyone tell me, what the 892 thumbs down were for?🤔 I can only sumise it's 'guitar envy' What this monster guitarist could do when missing about, they couldn't do when trying their utmost best😉 Simply amazing!!
Now THAT’S how you entertain with a guitar in your hands. Amazing performance, with several songs thrown in, and goofing around because he can . . . Would love to be able to move my hands that fast across the fingerboard. Stop criticizing, taking it apart, and just enjoy a phenomenal musician and performer.
While it took time to get to Classical Gas, he started off with Malaguena, and then Flight of the bumblebee. Not only a talented musician but funny as hell. That was back in the day when you didn't even say Hell or Damn on tv.......a LONG time ago!!
Or "Let's spend the night together" or "Come on baby light my fire". Even married couples couldn't be shown together in bed, even if they were just propped up reading a book. Prudes. Censors are rolling over in their graves now.
@@UserName_no1 Actually I was shocked that on the Brady Bunch, Mike and Carol were shown getting into bed together and sharing a good night kiss which was shocking back in about 1969. On the Dick Van Dyke show, they had separate twin beds and I don't remember seeing them in clothes other than him in a suit and her in a dress. Dear God, I've never liked to wear a dress, and as soon as I would get home from work, I was in shorts or sweats just depending on the season. Amazing how the time has changed. What is interesting is that back in the early-mid 70's I think, they outlawed advertising tobacco products on tv and to this day they still can't do it. I was so embarrassed back then when they started advertising "Feminine hygiene products". My parents were in their 50's and I wanted to vanish. These days, no big deal, now they have ED pills and they're advertising meds for a bent dick. Now boys get to be embarrassed in front of their moms for the same reasons. Times have truly changed. I need to go back and listen to George Carlins bit on "7 words you can't say on tv" because I think one or two can be crossed off his list. Thanks for giving me a laugh!!
@@survivrs Yeah, when I referenced banned song lyrics (e.g. Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, and The Doors) I was going back to the days of black&white TV and Ed Sullivan. Censorship occured before then (e.g. Chuck Barry's My Ding-a-ling) but that's when it came out on Front Street. Every once in a while a songwriter would slip something in. Case in point Harry Nilsson's Gotta Get Up e.g. " he would come to town and pound her for a couple of days"..... But the televised coverage of Woodstock (69) (no bras) and the Vietnam war (mid 60s onward) (the image of an Asian civilian summarily executed by a North Vietnamese military officer on a Cambodian street on the 6 o'clock news) changed everything. *Funny* how learning about the sexual orientation of leading men like 'Rock' Hudson and Darren Stevens(mid 60s onward), and Mike Brady (early to mid 70s), would flip our perceptions on their head(s), pun intended. I get your point about banning tobacco products (to this day) and allowing terms pertaining to one's genitals today. You can say vagina, but not cunt (only on cable/internet) or penis, but not dick. You can prick your finger, but you can't finger your prick~George Carlin (RIP). The 7 words are shit, piss, cunt, fuck, cock sucker, mother fucker, and tits. We can now say ass, bitch, fart, turd, twat, and pecker depending on the context in which it is delivered. Yeah I'm a big fan of the Critical Thinker. Sorely missed. Another thing that I found subliminally disturbing was the misogynistic depiction of women in cartoons and sitcom tv. Or the derogatory depiction of minorities. Allowing late night tv in the mid 60s to early 70s to tackle that Puritan bubble was key. As were prime time shows like All in the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons, and the immortal Sanford and Son. Ahhh, the days of innocence.
In the mid 80's I worked on a cruise ship and Jim Stafford would come on from time to time to perform and a couple times I was fortunate enough to be the spot light operator who pulled this prank off with Jim for the audience. Funny guy and fun to work with.
My wife and I went to Branson in 1999 and saw him in concert. What a show! He stayed almost 2 hours after the show with his wife to talk to people and sign autographs. I don’t think there will ever be another musician/actor/comedian like him! A real gentleman!
@@AKHWJ3ST of course I remember her, she's quietly living in a gated community can't remember the state , Tennessee or something close, in highschool she moved in with her mom and her husband in Palm Springs California
This is a blast, and I giggled myself silly and watched it three times. However, I agree the title should be changed. How about: "Jim Stafford on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour"?
That guy could have been a rock star! Speaking of which, could someone please upload the clip from Stafford's appearance on ABC's "In Concert" in 1974? The show was filmed in London, and Stafford performed "Classical Gas" solo, just himself, his guitar, and a set of organ-style bass pedals. He kicked the living crap out of the piece, he received a standing O, and as he exited the stage Stafford held his guitar over his head just like a superstar! I would love to see that performance again.
Same here. I recalled him vaguely when the video was in my recommendations and I did a quick search. I did not recall how incredibly talented he was. Glad I decided to click.
This guy is so hilariously funny you forget how amazing he is at the guitar! He doesn't need the guitar for an act, he doesn't need comedy either. Both will stand alone on their own Merit. This guy is truly a double threat.
As a youngster I used to love watching the Smothers Brothers. So many excellent high quality, mostly family friendly entertainment. Many more jokes I get now that were lost on me in my youth!
Bloody hell...what an incredible technique Jim Stafford has...and a most gentle touch at the start...!! I particularly liked it when he gave the lighting guy ""The "finger""..Wonderful talent~~
watched him as a kid, I forgot how funny he was! and how great a guitarist. and just noticed how he managed to flip the bird, can't believe he got away with that back then, but then it was the Smothers Brothers and they butted heads with the network a lot....
Playing the guitar one handed is very difficult. I know few people who can manage it. Props for managing to flip the bird in such a way that he could get away with it too!
I saw Jim Stafford in concert many years ago. He opened for Charlie Rich. He was so funny and really put on a great show. There are probably many entertainers out there that can play better than you think. It is kind of like Jerry Reed, he had some of the funniest songs, but he was also a fantastic guitar player. I saw him when he opened for one of my all time favorites, Glen Campbell. They played together that night too. Such a shame that Glen Campbell is gone, so much talent and Jerry Reed too. Jim Stafford is still performing.
jim is an icon in the guitar world in his days in the top ten And anybody that would play at the speed he could play like he was doing and make the screw-ups he made intentionally and go right back to what he was doing take skill
In the Summer of 1975, on a B&W TV, I watched Jim's "summertime replacement," "The Jim Stafford Show." His mixture of comedy and musical virtuosity really got me, and I have always wished he got more exposure. To this day, I have pleasant memories of watching that show in the hot NH nights with all the windows open.
Summer of 1975, I a Marine on Okinawa. We only got one English speaking station. I'm sure Jim's special was not on that "One" TV channel. He is so talented.
I was gonna say “was that actually even classical gas?” Aside from parts that he over strummed (I don’t know if on purpose as comical effect or not)and it not really being classical gas hes definitely skilled
Smothers Brothers was produced in the late 1960’s and early 70’s. If you saw this in 1989, you saw an old rerun! This show was originally aired in the 1970’s. This was before he wrote spiders and snakes. I grew up 10 miles from his home town in central Florida. I was a young teenager in the early 70’s when he appeared on this episode and I watched it’s original airing!
I had no clue that he was (still is) such an excellent classical guitarist. I could listen to this stuff all day. I saw Mason Williams play Classical Gas in the early '70s, and loved it.
Mason actually played the song on this show in an episode on a clear plexiglass guitar that had gold fish swimming in it. He worked on the show to the best of my memory. It might have been musical director. Jim is a really talented guy too as we know. The Who were on the show also, which you probably know. And I love your screen name. Take care.
I've been madly in love with Jim Stafford since I was a hot young thing in high school. Still crazy about him as a cold old thing in retirement. He's funny as all get out.
