This video contains historical footage taken during the Vietnam War for educational and historical purposes. BACKGROUND MUSIC is in keeping with fair use: The Jimi Hendrix Experience. SONG: All Along The Watchtower. Between March 1965 and November 1968, aircraft of the U.S. Air Force had flown 153,784 attack sorties against North Vietnam, while the Navy and Marine Corps had added another 152,399. On 31 December 1967, the Department of Defense announced that 864,000 tons of American bombs had been dropped on North Vietnam during Rolling Thunder, compared with 653,000 tons dropped during the entire Korean War and 503,000 tons in the Pacific theater during the Second World War.
The CIA privately estimated that damage inflicted in the north totaled $500 million in total damage. They also estimated that by April 1967, 52,000 casualties including 21,000 deaths had occurred as a result of the operation. The CIA estimated that 75 percent of casualties were involved in military or quasi-military operations including civilians working on military and logistical operations.45 percent of casualties in 1965 were civilians and logistics workers while that figure was 80 percent in 1966. In June 1967, they estimated 19,000 to 26,000 deaths including 13,000 to 17,000 civilian deaths were caused by the bombing. At the end of 1967, the CIA estimated 27,900 militaries and 48,000 civilians killed and wounded. The US government has estimated that 30,000 civilians were killed in total as a result of the operation.
Due to combat and operational circumstances, 506 U.S. Air Force, 397 Navy, and 19 Marine Corps aircraft were lost over or near North Vietnam. During the operation, of the 745 crewmen shot down, the U.S. Air Force recorded 145 rescued, 255 killed, 222 captured (23 of whom died in captivity), and 123 missing. Figures on U.S. Navy and Marine Corps casualties were harder to come by. During the 44-month time frame, 454 naval aviators were killed, captured, or missing during combined operations over North Vietnam and Laos.
Rolling Thunder had begun as a campaign of psychological and strategic persuasion, but it changed very quickly to interdiction, a tactical mission. Its ultimate failure had two sources, both of which lay with the civilian and military policy-makers in Washington: first, neither group could ever conceive that the North Vietnamese would endure the punishment that they would unleash upon it. The civilians, moreover, did not understand airpower well enough to know that their policies might be crippling it; second, the American military leadership failed to initially propose and develop, or later to adapt, an appropriate strategy for the war.
Along the way, RollingThunder also fell prey to the same dysfunctional managerial attitude as did the rest of the American military effort in Southeast Asia. The process of the campaign became an end unto itself, with sortie generation as the standard by which progress was measured. Sortie rates and the number of bombs dropped, however, equaled efficiency, not effectiveness.

I grew up in the Vietnam era. Initially, it was a dirty little war fought in some unknown country where no one could see. As time went by, the media got involved and moved in. Soon you could view the conflict in living colour as you ate your diner off of a TV tray in your living room. Monks burning in the streets, napalm rolling down and immolating anything in it's path, villagers annihilated by both sides, and the daily body counts. It didn't take long for the supposed heroism and glory to wear off as the public saw what wars are really all about. There is no glamour to be found, just young men trying to kill and maim one another after being sent by greedy old men looking to increase their influence and power. One of the saddest parts for me was to see how the young vets were treated when they arrived home. They were cursed, reviled by many, and sometimes spit on. It wasn't right nor fair. You see, those young men went to war because they believed in what their leaders were telling them and many had no choice because they were drafted and if they refused to go they were jailed. In any event, all were betrayed. Betrayed by their leaders and betrayed by their peers.............I don't condone any war and never will. They are pointless and could be avoided. As for those who were there and came home to more violence and hatred, you have my apologies. You didn't deserve that and it wasn't your fault so you should not have borne the blame...............

@@edgarazzz5 I suppose it's just a reference to Forrest Gump. Anyway I agree with everything Scooter Tramp says. War is the worst thing that could happen to anyone. And I salute those people who went to jail because they didn't want to fight in a war that wasn't theirs.

That's the reason why the first Rambo movie (based on an book), is an absolute masterpiece to this day, while the four other movies are just 80s trash. It's about the minimum amount of respect you should pay, not the satisfaction of the viewers in the cinema.

Sorry for your loss. I almost joined the Marines and was ready to knock on the recruitment office, then I asked myself why we are fighting the war in Vietnam when Ho Chi Minh have asked France to leave his country but was ignored. He even went to France and was snubbed. So, I went back home. I never did sign up for the military. I saw the effects on my former brother-in-law after he got out of the Vietnam war, and later died of cancer due to agent orange. Some wars need to be fought, but not Vietnam, Iraq, & Afghanistan, in my opinion.

I was 17 years old when I went into the U.S. NAVY and I was sent to the first Aircraft Carrier the Coral Sea as a brown shirt plane captain on F-4J model from VF121 for two and half weeks of training and it was an experience I will never forget especially night operations out at sea where it is pitch black and only red lights mostly to see by and hot exhaust all around and not making a mistake of being in the wrong place at the wrong time meaning preventing from being sucked in a engine intake. Working 12 hour on and 12 hours off and the food wasn't that good in my opinion. 1972- 1978 I served. This video brings back those memories. I am now 65 years old and working on UH-60 M BLACKHAWK HELICOPTERS at the Sikorsky Aircraft factory 🏭 now for 42 years and soon I will be retiring. I have given my service to my country in and out of the military.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Given a choice between prison or joining the Army, he chose the latter and enlisted on May 31, 1961. After completing eight weeks of basic training at Fort Ord, California, he was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division and stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Jimi was a true patriot. He joined the army almost exactly 7 years before I did.

@Ahmet Kudret independence war was only made possible so congress could do a legal switch and imply a new law making anyone who breaks the law and has to spend time is thereby a servant for work aka a slave to the jail that they are sent to, the war was never about slaves is what about the north attempting to taxate tf out of the south like uk did with the colonies and the south was willing to go to war about taxes since their imports and exports got cut off when all the current leaders of the south agreed to stop paying taxes for congress and the north since it was going to turn them bankrupt faster than a war could, so technically no war in history has ever been worth it unless you wanna talk about a less world threatening war with anticlimactic yet very traumatizing experiences because of arguably one of the most horrific and long lasting events that created generations of psychologically shellshocked people with behavior issues due to past events which were never properly diagnosed bc the entirety of it wasn’t even considered a war despite some cities being forced into martial law, the congress let alone the government both saw it as inner city rebellion aka the civil rights war which is still debatably happening in current time just in a new form .

The South Vietnamese people's courage & determination to maintain their freedom was an inspiration to just about all who knew them & espoused their cause. The Vietnam War has been, & continues to be, a hotly debated topic regarding the USA's involvement. But the South Vietnamese & the US service personnel knew what they were fighting for - the principles of freedom, independence, & the basic right to govern themselves. These are ideals which all freedom-loving peoples hold dear. The South Vietnamese stood against tyranny, & they deserve respect & gratitude for defending freedom's flag. Thanks for your comment.

South Vietnamese freedom, what a joke, the people would let their villages burn before they gave in to the dictator, not just in the north, even in the south, they hated their own southern government and the corruption within it, they had seen their families get abused and slaughtered on the orders of the genocidal dictator. You'll never understand the hatred in their eyes, not just for the dictators soldiers, but for anyone on those zippo raids. Some orders are evil, but not everyone had a choice. Those aren't nightmares you have to live with, so don't go around defending those who gave the orders in the name of freedom, you have no right.

Brennen, Also from the water. My brother and I were both in the Navy. His ship, The USS WADDELL DDG-24, Was in N. Vietnam, past the DMZ. He went twice to Vietnam at his own request! He made it back home, sadly, lost him to cancer due to AGENT ORANGE. I was in during on my first ship, The USS BLANDY DD943, BUT NOT over in Vietnam. Stay safe and GOD bless all.

Senior in high school. There was a tall redheaded guy, always dressed nice. Quiet guy had him in a couple classes. One morning during announcements they said he was killed in Viet Nam. I thought, I just saw him in class 6 months ago. There was no way they could train him up and have him prepared to have a chance to survive. I found out many years later he was in country 8 days walking point and a booby trap got him. Believe his squad made him the sacrificial lamb. He was a Marine. By then the prosecution of this war and the anti Americans here made everything FUBAR. Many of us wanted to do our duty as our predecessors had. Navy 1969 - 1973.

I read the sentences ---I´m german ---Vietnam was in my mind when I grow up / every day up to 1975---once an ww2 Soldier told me -- the new once survived no 14 day´s ---YES YOU are right --it doesn´t help that SOLDIER ---and I have no right answer either--REMEMBER HIM --as the peaceful person he wanted to be---I just hope you don´t hate me for my answer--it is that what I think and can write for the moment--REMEMBER HIM!! Google it. They have the short version, a couple of paragraphs. Pretty much confirms what we suspect. Take care, brother.

It's one big thing all the war movies get wrong. THE LOUD F'KN NOISES! Particularly an incredibly loud noise during a period of silence. This happened my 4th day at the FB. A Sergeant looked at me, smiled and said, "Boy, did you sh-t your pants"? I was shocked, checked, and said, "no"! The Sergeant laughed and said, "Well if you didn't now, you never will"! I found out he wasn't just joking. During some scary moments with a lot of shooting some guys, tough ones, did that or the other every time. One really tough squared away Sergeant always peed during a firefight. He'd just laugh later and say, "You can't help it"! Funny now but it shows what war puts your body through. I usually think of my time in country as long periods of boredom broken by really loud noises.
